The Lighthouse on Roosevelt Island is called the Blackwell Island Lighthouse (also known as the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse).
It’s located at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City and was built in 1872 by architect James Renwick Jr., the same architect who designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan.
A few interesting facts: • It’s about 50 feet tall and made of gray gneiss stone, quarried right from the island. • It was originally built to guide ships through the treacherous waters of the East River, especially near the nearby Hell Gate. • There’s a popular legend that it was built with help from an inmate from the island’s asylum, who supposedly constructed part of it by hand. • Today, it’s no longer an active navigational light, but it’s a beautiful historic landmark surrounded by a small park with benches and great views of Manhattan, Queens, and the East River.
If you go there in the evening, you’ll get a peaceful view with the city skyline in the background — almost like a hidden gem in NYC.
If you’d like, I can also tell you the legend about the crazy inventor connected to this lighthouse — it’s a wild Roosevelt...
Read moreI came to Roosevelt Island often by train and mostly hung out by the bottom of Island and never come up to the top of Island. Today I came by car because I also took my dog with me. It was different feeling coming this way and I have to park my car at the parking lot because on the side street only allow the Island resident to park.
I walked about 15 minutes to the Lighthouse, and it wasn't crowded at all on Saturday. The park was nice and has some Arts make the park more interesting. Around lighthouse has big curb to sit and see east river and you can enjoy view of both side of Manhattan and Queens. Compare to the bottom of the Island I think the feeling isn't the same. Down there is more to the ocean and up here is more river vibe. I also heard in the summer lots of people like to come to this park for BBQ. It such a nice park.
There are many ways to come to this Island by train, car, furry or...

Best way to get there is public transportation as parking on the island can be rough. The "Motorgate" Parking Garage is the closest public garage and it is about 0.8 mile walk from there to the Park. Rates are about $8 per hour, $10 for 2 hours. You also can walk/bike over from Queens using the Roosevelt Island Bridge-36th Avenue. You can also take the F Train or Tram to Roosevelt Island from Manhattan and then take the free Red Bus which runs up and down the Island.
The park is a beautiful open space with the lighthouse on the end.The park also has the "Girl Puzzle" exhibit some open grassed space.
The space is very well maintained. It offers some lovely views of Queens and the...
