Biking around Roosevelt Island was one of the most relaxing and scenic moments of our NYC trip. With fewer crowds and wide-open paths, it felt like a world away from the city—even though Manhattan is just across the water.
The island is perfect for a leisurely ride: smooth, quiet, and full of stunning views of both the Manhattan and Queens skylines. You can coast past landmarks like the Smallpox Memorial Hospital, Four Freedoms Park, and Southpoint Park, all while soaking in fresh air and river breezes.
At the northern tip, we reached the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse—a small but striking structure with over a century of history. Built in 1872, it once guided ships around the treacherous waters near Hell Gate. Now it stands as a peaceful beacon surrounded by water and skyline views. Read moreLooking for something different, and a bit out of the way? Do you need some time to clear your mind? Maybe this short trek will be for you. On the northern tip of Roosevelt Island, you will find this cute little lighthouse. I don't go here solely for to enjoy the lighthouse, it's getting there as well. I like to grab a snack and my music, head to midtown and catch the Roosevelt Island Tram 🚠 across the river from Manhattan with great aerial views. I walk along the shore all the way to the northern point soaking in the sunlight and the views of course. Try walking up on one side and down on the other side when you go, you may get a perspective of the city not seem by most.
FYI - the tram is just a cost of a metrocard swipe each way, and is included in monthly and weekly plans much like any other...
