Extremely Disappointing Experience - Not Reflective of True Islamic Values

I was appalled by how I was treated at this mosque. As a modestly dressed woman with a scarf in my bag, I was harassed by a man sitting near the elevator, repeatedly insisting that I put on my scarf right then and there. Despite my polite insistence that I would wear it when I reached the women’s floor, he wouldn’t let up. It wasn’t until I stepped into the elevator, accompanied by my elderly mother, that another man tried to force the door open to remove me, simply because I hadn’t worn my scarf immediately. I firmly said no, and only after that, another man intervened.

Things didn’t improve. About 15 minutes later, in the middle of the khutbah, a man came to the women’s floor and started loudly reprimanding everyone about wearing the scarf. And as if that wasn't enough, when I was leaving, another woman approached me to criticize and lecture me about it.

If you are a woman—whether you're a practicing Muslim or just trying to learn more about Islam—do not go here. This place is not welcoming or respectful of women. I’ve had far more positive experiences at places like the NYIC or NYU Islamic Center, where women are treated with respect and kindness, not harassment.

This experience left me disheartened and disappointed, and I would not recommend this...

AsSalaamu alaikum,

It has come to my attention, as well as the attention of several members of the Muslim community, that Sheikh Mostafa's classes and claims have been causing division and confusion among the congregation. His statements have raised serious doubts about his ability to lead and guide the community effectively.

It is imperative that a place of worship such as Masjid Manhattan serves as a unifying force for our community, fostering an environment of harmony, understanding, and spiritual growth. Unfortunately, Sheikh Mostafa's classes seem to be contrary to this principle, as they appear to be leading to division and hate.

In light of these concerns, I respectfully request that the Board of Masjid Manhattan consider a thorough evaluation of Sheikh Mostafa's claims and teachings. If it is found that he is indeed contributing to the division and misguidance within the community, I strongly urge that appropriate measures be taken, including his potential removal from his current position.

I believe that this step is necessary to safeguard the unity and well-being of the Muslim community that relies on Masjid Manhattan as a source of spiritual guidance and support.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will handle it with the utmost care and consideration for the well-being of...

Masjid Manhattan is the only masjid in NYC that I enjoy going to for congregation and prayer. The organizers have made the masjid so peaceful and so very comfortable especially in the womens section. I absolutely love the decor and the numerous updates that have been made in the past 6 years of my attendance. All the funds made towards the masjid really do go to benefiting our community and our future generations. JazaKhAllah Khairan Kaseeran to all those individuals who make this masjid the best! Alhumdulillah. Ya rab, bless this masjid, its members and its future generations....

A piece of Jannah in lower Manhattan. I prayed johor Salah on a Saturday. When you enter the main door go towards your left and open the door to go downstairs for wudu and bathroom. You can take your shoes to the wudu area and bathroom. Both wudu area and bathroom are cleaned. I think sisters will go upstairs for pray, wudu and bathroom. There are free coffee and tea for everyone. Please donate as much as you can.

Masjid is lower Manhattan. It has two access doors. One leads to stairs other one leads to elevator access. The wudu place is in the basememt. It's multi storied mosque, very spacious. Women's prayer room is on 4th FL. Went there on last week jumma prayer, Feb 18th. Prayer began around 1.30-1.45 pm. This mosque needs more financial support to operate, please donate generously.
