My 2 granddaughters really enjoy the Pearl Street Playground. It has a good variety of climbing and sliding devices, safety swings for the little ones, plenty of space for running and cavorting plus it's all on a nicely cushioned ground cover that makes the occasional fall less painful. They also have a sprinkler ball and water play area for splashing fun in hot weather.
In my opinion it is best for 3 to 6 year olds, but my 1 year old granddaughter liked it a lot and I saw several kids who were probably 8 or 9, so it apparently appeals to a wider range of children.
Compared to other parks, it is a bit smaller, but there were plenty of benches for care givers and lots of space to park strollers. Because of the ages of most of the children, there was a lot of adult supervision which made the playground feel safer. I also liked the security fence. It kept little ones from wandering away, but was easy to access for adults.
Because it was just across the street from the South Street Seaport Tourist area, folks visiting the city might want to join the locals and stop by for their kids to get a little break in a long day of sightseeing.
One additional observation: Because some people obviously feed them, there were quite a few pigeons. Some kids liked that and some were a bit afraid.
We only visited the playground a few times over the winter months, but we look forward to spending many happy hours there with our granddaughters as the weather warms up...
Read moreReally great small playground. When I say "small" it's in a good way - my 23 month old had a blast because the features are so small she can actually access enough without our help. Gated area makes it safe for her to run around and for us to leave our kinderwagen along the benches! It's clean with a nice spongy floor so the kids aren't sandy or dirty when they're finished playing. Have to mention though it's the first place anyone was ever directly mean to our daughter - the nannies who bring the kids here to play should be interacting more with their little ones. I had to intervene when a 4 year old was left to his own devices - "don't let her pass! HATE HATE HATE HER!" I understand kids are going to be terrible sometimes, but a stranger shouldn't be the first to notice...
