I had a wonderful time visiting the Kiewit Luminarium, a new science center that opened on Omaha's RiverFront in April 2023. The Luminarium is a place where you can explore the amazing phenomena that shape our world, our communities, and ourselves. It has more than 100 interactive exhibits and a variety of engaging programs for all ages and interests.
The Luminarium is not your typical science museum. It is designed to spark your curiosity and creativity, and to challenge your assumptions and perspectives. You can experiment with light, sound, motion, magnetism, and more. You can create your own art and music, and share your ideas with others. You can learn about the history and culture of Omaha and the region, and how science and engineering have shaped its development.
Some of my favorite exhibits were the Tornado Tube, where you can create and control a mini tornado; the Shadow Box, where you can play with your own shadow and see how it changes with different colors and shapes; the Kaleidoscope, where you can see beautiful patterns and symmetries; and the Infinity Room, where you can experience the illusion of being in an endless space.
The Luminarium also has a stunning view of the Missouri River and downtown Omaha. You can enjoy the scenery from the rooftop terrace or from the windows inside. The building itself is a beautiful piece of architecture, with a bright and colorful exterior that reflects the light in different ways.
The staff at the Luminarium were very friendly and helpful. They answered my questions and guided me through some of the exhibits. They also offered me some tips on what to see and do in Omaha, such as visiting the Old Market, the Henry Doorly Zoo, and the Joslyn Art Museum.
I highly recommend visiting the Kiewit Luminarium if you are in Omaha or nearby. It is a fun and educational experience for everyone. You will discover something new every time you go there. It is one of the best attractions in Omaha, and I can't wait to...

If Willy Wonka had traded candy for science experiments and swapped Oompa Loompas for friendly museum staff, youād land squarely at the Kiewit Luminarium. šš¬
šØāš©āš§āš¦ We rolled in with a squad ranging from teen skeptics (16 & 18 years old) to heat-weary parents, expecting a pleasant distraction from the blaze outside. What we got? Three hours of full-throttle curiosity, laughter, and low-key parental redemption (we picked the cool museum).
š§Ŗ Every exhibit begged to be touched, twisted, poked, and puzzled over. STEM activities? Check. Health experiments? Check. Uncontrollable giggles while trying to outsmart gravity? Also check. Even our teensāwho usually think museums are āmehāāhad a blast. Parents included. In fact, I caught myself saying, āI wish this existed when I was a kidā at least four times.
šļø The building itself? Straight-up majestic. It looks like it could launch into orbit or host a secret team of science Avengers. Staff were uniformly friendly and helpfulālike if hospitality were an Olympic sport, theyād take gold.
š„ The cafĆ© served up lunch that was legitimately deliciousāthough yep, itās got that classic museum price tag šø. Worth it for the flavors and AC alone.
š Gift shop near the exit was an eye-candy parade of science swag, nostalgic toys, and āooh I didnāt know I needed thisā items.
š³ Outside, beautifully landscaped play areas keep the littles happy, while grown-ups can admire the scenic river view and watch barges drift by like lazy science boats on a mission. š³ļø
š„ Verdict: If itās scorching outside and you need to cool off while boosting IQ points, the Kiewit Luminarium hits the sweet spot. High-energy, hands-on, and hilariously fun. Even the teens smiled unironically.
