Photographers beware! This place is not what it once was. First, there is police tape and plastic yard signs everywhere. The signs are telling people not to swim, not to grill or vape/smoke. The city of Roswell changed the rules about swimming in Aug of 2024. Because they put a link chain and yard signs all along the path — photos are obstructed and it’s not a relaxing environment anymore. I understand the efforts for safety and environmental reasons to discontinue swimming, but the way they’re enforcing the rule has stripped the beauty + serenity from this trail. We paid the city’s permit and got permission to photograph a portrait session in this location. 15 minutes into our time we were yelled at by a city police officer for sitting in the grass. He told us we “broke the rules” (we were not near the water, nor smoking, nor grilling!!) and told to leave the park immediately or else. No warning, no explanation. I wanted to cry for my poor photo clients who were celebrating a life event. I’ve taken photos here for years. We’ve always been respectful of the property and others. We tried to follow the rules by purchasing a photo permit and respecting the new water rules. I’ve never been spoken to in such a hurtful way by another human. This could’ve been solved with a simple conversation. Just really unfortunate experience. If they don’t want people to come here, don’t give out permits for this spot anymore!
TL;DR — photographers don’t waste your time or money getting a permit. Pick a new place for photos. If you want a fun place to relax in nature — pick a different trail or park for your walk. The city is handling the new safety + environmental efforts here poorly. I feel like we got unlucky — wrong place, wrong time situation. Maybe it will be...

Read morePLEASE READ BEFORE GOING TO SEE THE WATERFALL. Parking (on weekends) is a pretty long walk to the entrance. Plan accordingly. There are two ways to get to the waterfall at Roswell Mill which is also called Vickery Creek Waterfall. (It’s confusing). If you travel over the bridge and turn left you will be at a very steep and dangerous climb down to play in the waterfall and river. Just fine IF you’re careful, young and agile. Little kids and people over 40 probably go the other way unless you’re just taking pictures.
If you don’t go over the bridge, but walk along the trail next to the river and bathrooms, you will come upon an easier way to play in the water. This is especially important if you have little kids and want to swim. Don’t waste precious time and energy going the bridge way.
Bring water shoes, the rocks are very slippery and hard to navigate. There are lots of rocks to sit on in the river and a sandy beach. I don’t know what the smell is, but the river kinda smells funky so I’d wash off after coming home. Sure wish there was an outdoor shower like at the ocean. We went on a weekend and it was very busy but the river bank is huge so plenty of room. Over by the falls are great photo opportunities. Don’t drop that phone...
