I'm a Salem resident and I am on a mission to tour all the local attractions.

About this one: This museum is a recent addition to the Salem list of attractions and it definitely fits the expectations of what visitors think they will find here in Salem!

What it is: It consists of 5 small rooms and a corridor area filled with artifacts - the majority original - used in the past for torture, mainly in Europe. Each artifact comes with some history and explanation. Some devices are shown with mannequins set up as in little scenes. Ominous music from he speakers gives an overall spooky atmosphere to the experience.

It is located very conveniently close to the commuter rail station, however this place is not overly-visible from the main street as it is located in the basement of an inconspicuous building. I don't think tickets can be bought at the door but can only be purchased online and they are timed.

PROs I found it quite informative and "entertaining" - if you allow me to use the term while talking about torture. It is mind-blowing to think how much suffering humans can cause to each other and this is a though-provoking museum. Because the majority of the artifacts is original, if feels like a genuine museum, although "exhibit" would probably be the best term to describe this place. Pictures are allowed and some areas of the display are definitely picture-worthy.

CONs It is small! This is a common problem in Salem - not enough space left for new attractions! Also, but this is just my own opinion, it lacks a bit of "structure", meaning that it is a sequence of artifacts and explanations without an overall introduction or a clear sequence.

Just a note to mention that the museum is - needless to say - designed for...

The Salem Museum of Torture is a compelling and chilling destination that offers a deep dive into the grim aspects of history. Located in the heart of Salem, this museum provides an eye-opening experience with its extensive collection of torture devices and exhibits. The attention to detail in the displays is exceptional, bringing historical contexts to life and offering a sobering reminder of humanity's darker chapters.

Visitors are guided through well-curated exhibits that not only showcase the instruments but also explain their historical significance and the terrifying purposes they served. The atmosphere is both eerie and educational, making it a thought-provoking journey through time. The knowledgeable staff are always on hand to answer questions and provide additional insights, enhancing the overall experience.

For those interested in history, criminology, or the macabre, the Salem Museum of Torture is a must-visit. It’s a stark yet fascinating reminder of the past and a powerful educational resource. This museum stands out for its commitment to preserving history while engaging and educating...

This was one of the best museums I visited in Salem this past week. Even though you can be in and out within 30 minutes, this place has plenty of interesting exhibits on display with a little trivia to read about each torture device. This place can make even a horror hound, such as myself cringe at the thought of the kind of real life torture and / or humiliation people have endured in the past. It was also interesting to find out that the pendulum torture device was actually fictional and was created by Edgar Allan Poe. The museum is very well organized and the young man who sold me my ticket was friendly and helpful. They have a small gift shop as soon as you enter, but there are no public restrooms. I know this place is still relatively new to the area, so I hope the next time I visit Salem, they add more artifacts to their awesome collection. Overall, if you are the type of person who likes movies like Saw, then I definitely recommend checking...
