Review: Dolphin and Whale Sunset Cruise by San Diego Whale Watch
I had high hopes for this experience, but unfortunately, it didnât quite meet expectations. The cruise started at 5:30 PM from Mission Bay, with check-in required 45 minutes prior. The first hour began promisingâwe saw small beak dolphins early onâbut then we continued cruising south for what felt like forever without much to see. Eventually, we did come across a pod of long-beaked dolphins, which was a highlight.
That said, the journey itself became increasingly uncomfortable. The cold Pacific wind was biting, and despite being June, I regretted not bringing a much warmer jacket. Several passengers, including my parents, struggled with severe motion sickness and were visibly unwell. I myself was feeling cold and restless, especially as we cruised 14 miles out with no whales and no clear sign of returning soon. By around 7:00 PM, I just wanted to be back on land.
One positive noteâthe crew was kind and attentive. They regularly checked in on passengers, especially those feeling sick, and did their best to provide support throughout the ride. Their professionalism made a tough trip slightly more bearable.
However, I believe the website could do a better job preparing guests. ⢠First, it should clearly emphasize how cold it gets out at ocean, regardless of the seasonâstrongly recommending warm layers or jackets. ⢠Second, it should be upfront that this tour isnât suitable for everyone. Motion sickness is a real concern and shouldnât be downplayed (in hindsight, signing that waiver should have been a bigger red flag for me).
I wish I could say this was a fun or memorable adventure, but unfortunately, it wasnât. While I understand that marine wildlife sightings canât be guaranteed, the overall experience was more discomfort...

I canât say enough good things about our experience with San Diego Whale Watch! This was by far one of the best whale watching cruises Iâve ever been on. From start to finish, the crew went above and beyond to make sure everyone had an incredible time â not just with the whale sightings, but with their genuine care and attention to every detail.
A huge shoutout to Melissa, who was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about marine life. She made sure we all knew what to look for and provided fascinating insights throughout the trip. It was clear that she truly loves what she does and wants every guest to have a meaningful experience.
I also have to mention Big Dave and Brandon in the galley â they were so friendly and welcoming. Brandon served up snacks and drinks with a smile and Big Dave did everting and anything that was needed it seems! Even when things got a little rocky, they kept the mood light and made sure everyone was comfortable.
What really stood out was how the crew handled passengers who were feeling seasick. They were so attentive and kind, checking on everyone regularly and offering support without hesitation. Itâs rare to see a crew that truly cares more about their guests than profit, but thatâs exactly the kind of service we experienced.
Please support this small, family-owned business! Itâs clear that they put their heart and soul into creating an amazing experience for their guests. If youâre looking for an unforgettable whale watching trip in San Diego, this is the one. Thank you to the entire team for making this such a memorable day â we canât wait...
Read moreFIVE STARS!! I decided to change my flight to the red eye so I could book this tour. I am beyond happy that I did! Captain John did an amazing job navigating and making sure all sides of the boat were able to see the action when we encountered wildlife. Our Naturalist, Alison, was very informative and I learned so many new things. Itâs important to me that these trips are educational and she knocked it out of the park while also capturing some amazing photographs which I did purchase to save digitally. I took my own photos but nothing beats a professional photographer. Our Deckhand, Oscar, was very friendly and walked around the entire time, answering questions, making sure everyone was happy and having fun and also cracking some ocean themed jokes here and there. Danielle held down the fort at the snack and refreshments bar. She was very friendly and nice to talk to. The boat itself has a nice set-up and is VERY clean and well maintained. I did not use the restroom so I cannot comment on that but by the looks of the rest of the boat, I imagine they keep it at the same standard. There is also a photo wall on the lower deck to take selfies. Overall, I was surprised by the extra offerings and very pleased. Money well spent! And a sleepless red eye back to MI, well worth it! Mahalo! đ¤đť I did purchase the priority boarding and thought that was a nice perk too. Cheers! Happy sailing! PS - My tour was at 12:30 on October 21, 2024. We saw Sea Lions both in the marina area and swimming/jumping out at sea, probably 100 dolphins (if not more) and 3 beautiful humpback whales, lots of...
