Wow. These reviewers are completely wrong about the location and usage of this path judging by some of the photos and descriptions. First of all, Lovers' Lane is a paved, lighted and fairly well trafficked biking and pedestrian path that cuts directly from the Presidio Blvd Gate to the heart of the Presidio, from which you can access the Crissy Field Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge. The pictured dirt path with the criss-cross logs? Yeah, that's not it. That's called Wood Line, and it's an earthwork by artist Andy Goldsworthy.
The distinction is important, since bikers and walkers should use Lovers' Lane rather than the dangerous Presidio Blvd roadway to descend into the Presidio. By confusing the it with Wood Line, and labeling it as a dark make-out spot, these reviewers are discouraging the use of the real Lovers' Lane as a safe and useful route.
Lovers' Lane was named by the soldiers in the old days for its use as a fast route to get out of the Presidio and into the city to meet your lover. It wasn't a place to make out. Outsiders would have to pass the gate sentries to get to the path, which the sentries could see.
What tourists today need to know about Lover's Lane is that is a well-lighted, well-maintained pedestrian/bike path that is a lot safer than trying to walk down or up twisty, narrow, heavily car-trafficked Presidio Blvd, which has no sidewalk and a barely adequate bike lane (on the...
Read moreEasy to miss the turn to get into this area, when driving the car. There isn't a sign that clearly indicates this destination. Parking is only in residential area, so I could imagine it's really hard to find parking on the weekends when people go visit this area. I recommend either walking or taking a bicycle to this destination if you come on the weekends. The walk through the trees is very nice. Two professional photo sessions were going on when we visited. If you want to take pics without anyone in the background, then you have to go on a weekday when the weather isn't that inviting. If you go on the weekend on a sunny day, then the place will attract many people, and your pictures will show people in the backdrop. My first time here, and...
Read moreIt is always nice to escape from the concrete greyness of "downtown" for recreation and gentle excercise and this location is ideal for such occasions. Offering families and "romantic couples" an opportunity to stroll, absorb the natural loveliness of trees and encounter occasional glimpses of wildlife. Adults and especially children enjoy the well established fun routine of "walking atop the wooden line" along a designated trail. Midweek is probably more desirable for a quieter...
