The Bernini Fountain in Piazza San Pietro (St. Peter’s Square) is one of two beautiful fountains in the square, both designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. They are located symmetrically on either side of the central Vatican Obelisk, contributing to the grandeur and harmony of the space. Key Features of the Bernini Fountain: 1. Date: The fountain on the right side of the square (when facing St. Peter’s Basilica) was designed by Bernini and completed in 1675. It is often referred to as the “South Fountain” to distinguish it from the other fountain designed by Carlo Maderno. 2. Design: The fountain has a double basin design. The lower basin is wide and shallow, while the upper basin is smaller and sits above it. The water cascades down from the top basin into the larger lower basin, creating a beautiful, serene effect. 3. Symbolism: The fountain was part of Bernini’s grand design for Piazza San Pietro, symbolizing the flow of life and the welcoming embrace of the Church. The two fountains help balance the obelisk and the colonnades, emphasizing the unity and welcoming nature of the Church. 4. Water Flow: The fountains, in combination with the surrounding architecture, create an atmosphere of peace and solemnity in the square, particularly during ceremonies and papal blessings. The Maderno Fountain, located on the opposite side, was designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613 and features a similar style, complementing the Bernini Fountain in both form and purpose.

The fountains in St. Peter's Square, in the Vatican, were commissioned by Pope Paul V in the 17th century by the baroque classics, the architects Moderno and Bernini. They are located symmetrically, on both sides of the ancient Egyptian obelisk, which went to the Vatican from the circus of Caligula and became the last surviving witness to the bloody past of this place. The fountains are created in the form of round pools with hexagonal marble blocks in the center. On the blocks are large bowls, from which seven jets beat, flowing into the pool of the fountain. If you stand with your back to St. Peter's Basilica, then on the left side of us there will be a fountain made by Carlo Moderno, and on the right side the fountain of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

When you come to visit St. Peter's Square, you will feel that you have come to your spiritual home. Fifty years, St. Peter's Square was decorated with only one Maderno fountain on the north side, and an obelisk built by Pope Sixtus V. The southern part of the square was empty. It seemed inharmonious. In 1667, Pope Clement X commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to build a second fountain that exactly copied the design of Maderno's fountain. Bernini's fountain was completed in 1677. Originally, the water pressure in both fountains was higher, so much so that they sprayed to a height of eight meters. As part of saving water, the water pressure was reduced during the twentieth century.

We visited magnificent and eternal city of Rome in June, 2023. We saw outstanding Vatican City, Vatican Museums, that brilliant and matchless St. Peter's Basilica and we were blown away by the Bernini Fountain at Piazza San Pietro. This iconic fountain is one of the most famous in the world, and it's easy to see why. The fountain was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII in 1623, and it took Gian Lorenzo Bernini over 30 years to complete. It is made up of over 200 tons of travertine marble, and it features four large sculptures of river gods, each representing a different continent: Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. The sculptures are surrounded by cascading water, and they are topped by a central obelisk. The Bernini Fountain is a masterpiece of Baroque art. It is a truly awe-inspiring sight, and it is a must-see for any visitor to Rome. In fact, the fountain was so impressive that it was said to have caused a traffic jam when it was first unveiled. People were so eager to see it that they stopped their carriages in the middle of the street to take a look. The fountain is also a symbol of the power of the Catholic Church. The four river gods represent the four continents known to Europeans at the time, and the central obelisk is an Egyptian obelisk that was brought to Rome in the 1st century AD. The fountain is a reminder of the Church's global reach and its dominance over the known world. But the Bernini Fountain is more than just a symbol of power. It is also a work of art that celebrates the beauty of nature. The cascading water and the lush vegetation surrounding the fountain create a sense of peace and tranquility. It is a place where people can come to relax and reflect, and to marvel at the creativity of human genius. One of the greatest places on...
