Indy and the Lost Apartment 603 Location is great and the resort pool is fantastic but… It was fitting that there was an Indiana Jones movie marathon on the week we stayed here. As I found many a specimens and relics in the midst of my 2 bedroom rental for the week here in sunny Surfers Paradise. The walkway from the lift to our room, gave off the whiff of a medieval tavern. I found the medieval theme continued in the utilities kitchen draw, as there was no egg turner thingy utensil, which had me thinking “how on earth did the medieval person survive without an egg turner thingy utensil?” and it dawned on me, alas they had never fried eggs. I continued my misadventure to the oven hoping I would be pleasantly surprised but only to be hit with the harsh reality of finding left behind remnants of a roast, is that chicken or beef? hmm I’m tempted to touch and sniff. As I’m writing on the couch, I’m looking across to one of the the side table lamps which remind me of the ancients columns in Rome, if you would classify the 90’s as ancient as well. They are huge and heavy and if it fell on your head, you would die instantly. Speaking of Rome, Mt Vesuvius erupts each time you turn on the kitchen tap, an explosion of water comes out, if it was previously set on hot. Turn on while cold, and you get Niagara Falls. The main shower felt like the engine room of the Titanic, with water coming out of the shower head in unexpected directions complete with engine room, origin taps and noises. You constantly have flashbacks of the Titanic each time you turned on one of the screeching and rattling taps in either one of the bathrooms and reminded myself of why I disappointingly overpaid for this sinking ship, ahem I mean apartment. The mirror in the main bedroom would gladly stand up against any high sheen stainless steel mirror in a maximum security prison. If the Great Gatsby movie set needed props for a remake, they would be glad to know they could find 20’s themed wall sconces scattered throughout this apartment. Leonardo, I count about 6. I cleaned the toaster from the previous guests and the grubby utensil draw but I didn’t bother with the oven as I wouldn’t be using it. You’re welcome! The random mismatch of wire hangers and DIY Better Homes and Garden looking dresser, rustic closets gave seedy motel vibes from NCIS. The photos depicted are not what I expected, it is outdated, rundown, dust and mouldy stuff on the curtains and aircon vents, shower tiles, which is sad. Dried dripping paint along the tiles in main bathroom where they attempted a DIY to cover the 90’s tile theme. We washed and used bed linen sheets to cover the couches, as they are fabric and God only knows what they’ve had to endure. Dexter would probably enjoy cleaning this place inside out with his disposable gloves and forensic know how but I didn’t have time while on holiday. Location and resort pool was great, our kids loved it. The fridge was clean, the washer and dryer were a godsend, beds were clean and comfortable. Towels were provided but you still need to bring extras for swimming, shampoo, conditioner, soaps and kitchen cleaning products provided, were handy and useful. No WIFI so my kids had to hotspot (although this was in the pre-booking information on airbnb website). TV in kids room did not have a signal. The TV in lounge was not a smart TV, no access to Netflix, Prime or Foxtel. My kids came away with a better understanding of how I lived in the 80’s and 90’s without internet and Netflix. $3100 for 5 nights from Jan 4-Jan 9 or $620 per night is a hefty price tag that I would expect to pay for a 4 star hotel where the accommodation meets the same standards during peak season. Im sure there are more updated apartments in this building, managed by Mantra or realtors and they might be disappointed to know the upkeep in this unit is not up to par. Bob the cleaner was very friendly and helpful, as was...
Read moreStayed Dec 2020. After reading some horrendous reviews I was very apprehensive about staying here but couldn't back out of the reservation I had made through Discover Queensland. So I called ahead of my check in date to make sure the accommodation would be suitable and acceptable for my 2 children and myself which they were happy to hear my concerns and allocate a room accordingly.
The main entrance is beautiful and clean and the staff on the front counter were delightful and helpful. My mother was coming as well and we required an extra car park which they kindly accommodated. Foyer is extremely dark though at nighttime once reception has closed which makes it a bit creepy.
The hotel is quite dated and the entire place is in desperate need of a facelift.
We stayed in a 2 bedroom, air conditioned, ocean view room. Our room number was 1606. Our room was modern, very spacious and clean. I specifically rang up and asked for a modern, mostly tiled, recently renovated room and got pretty much that so was very happy. While there were a few minor cosmetic details that could be adressed, the room was fine for myself, my mother and my two small children (3 and 6). Few tiny little stains on carpets here and there, a little mold on some curtains, a cigarette butt on one of the verandahs which also needed a hose off or mop. Some of the furniture was slightly damaged but it certainly wasn't a deal breaker, especially with two kids running about. Our unit was great compared to others I have seen. The bed covers hadn't been cleaned from previous guests so we didn't use them. Otherwise the apartment was quite nice and comfortable. We very much enjoyed our stay in it.
The smell in the foyer on level 16 however was absolutely putrid. It was like someone walked out of the lift and spewed up on the floor and it was left to fester in the heat. It was nauseating. We asked 2 different cleaners to attend to the smell. The 1st did nothing, however, the 2nd did cover the smell with cleaning detergent which faded over 24hrs and the putrid smell was back again. Clearly the carpet needs either pulling up and replacing or it needs a professional deep clean on the entire foyer carpet on level 16 as pouring chemicals on it clearly doesn't work. Hopefully they sort that out ASAP and isnt a problem for future guests.
View from our 2 verandahs was nice, from the surfers ocean front, past surfers city and out to the hinterland. It was lovely having breakfast out there and then enjoying the night lights once the kids went to bed.
Kiosk cafe near the pool had great food and was well priced.
The pools were great, kids had a ball. The pool is quite deep though at the bottom of the slide so little ones need constant supervision but they absolutely loved playing there which was fantastic.
Thai restaurant was probably the best part of this hotel. The food there is to die for. The best Thai food we've ever had. Just amazing! The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous too, and they also do takeaway which was handy.
Getting in and out with the swipe toggle is a bit difficult when they placed the swipe machine down so low. It could be placed higher in the lifts to make it easier for guests but thats a small thing in retrospect.
Hotel is close to surfers which made for easy walking with the kids to go out for lunch and dinner or down to the beach or out to the attractions. Tram station basically at the front door of hotel too which was great if going further than walking distance.
We were relatively happy with our stay and apartment, especially since it was during peak season, especially for the price we paid through a deal with Discover Queensland. The staff were polite and helpful. We had a really lovely time and the kids thoroughly enjoyed making some memories on...
Read moreOverall experience was 'meh' A few pointers: Bathroom needs SERIOUS renovations. No Toiletries? Very silly and odd. Rooms need to be cleaned properly. The room was quite filthy- the bathroom looked like it wasn't cleaned recently. Dust particles floating around the room and it aggravated my asthma, I was having trouble breathing EVERY night. Balcony very dirty. Also not once during our stay was the room cleaned again or bedsheets changed? No option given to us to request it either. Amenities such as pool and spa were DIRTY. You could smell the dirt. There was a mould smell as well. Staff a little dismissive and not very helpful. We asked for late check out and I had requested it over 2 weeks prior to my stay over the phone and was told that I just need to ask the night before and it should be complimentary. I asked the night before EARLY in the morning, was told 'no' then told 'you can have one hour but there's a penalty fee' so no, that is not complementary. Similar to early check out, we asked for early check in when we booked the hotel in January and then 4 weeks before we stayed and 2 weeks before we stayed and were told 'we will check on the day'. We asked on the day after arriving at 10am and they refused to give us the room saying 'it's not ready yet, it will be ready around 12pm', when we entered the room at approx. 1pm, we see the card that specifies the room was cleaned two days before we arrived so technically was ready from two days ago but just wasn't given to us which greatly inconvenienced us as we were tired and had woken up at 4am for our flight and needing to sleep. The TV was ancient, no APPS on the TV such as Netflix. No HDMI in the room to connect a laptop. Screen mirroring was not working. No free wi-fi?? That's not normal for hotels these days. I had free wi-fi in third world country hotels. A bit of a joke. Air-conditioning and heating horrible. On the day of check out, we were gathering our bags and it had barely passed 10am, and we received a call from reception threatening us that there's a penalty fee for late check out. No Concierge at all? no one to help carry our bags when we arrived or left. We weren't even offered trolley when we arrived. Lobby needs serious renovation- looked juvenile and not elegant or luxurious at all. Each floor needs renovation to improve room access. Felt like a maze having to go all around every time we want to leave the room or go back to it. Some floors had connecting bridges but ours did not.
Overall, the stay was 'ok' because we had a bed to sleep on BUT we regret staying there as we could have gone to a nicer hotel.
We choose Matra Crown because the pictures looked beautiful but it was a catfish experience.
A room fee of around $300 a night and this experience is VERY disappointing.
An additional note: I left the same review on Trip Advisor and was responded to with the most DISGUSTING comment by a Hotel Manager. Basically brushing off the entirety of the review with a fake apology and pinpointing the ONE thing (concierge) service that apparently isn't advertised. I note there WERE trollies available and we struggled with our bags when we checked in and NOONE offered a trolley. Furthermore, I was basically told not to go to the...
