Guia Fortress is situated upon the top of Guia Hill, overlooking the city of Macau. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage attractions and a common image scene of Macau seen in guidebooks.
Interestingly, there is quite little to see of the actual fort. However, a new information centre has been opened this year. Here you can learn a bit about the fort's nearly 400 year history as well as details regarding the frescos you can see in the Guia Chapel. Opening hours are 9am to 6pm.
There is a short tunnel you can access from the back side of the fort. Near the entrance, you will also find a room dedicated to weather observatory and see reports of past typhoons that have wrecked havoc on Macau.
The information centre is located just inside the entrance area, below the chapel and lighthouse. After a short visit to the info centre, walk up to and access the Guia Chapel (no photography inside) and see historic frescos in its two chambers. You can also get close to the Guia Lighthouse (no entrance).
Do take a bit of time to enjoy the views of the city from Guia Fort. The 270 degree scenes from here are probably the best reason for visiting the Guia Fortress and its respective World Heritage attractions at this point in time.
Note: For a bit of exercise, you can walk up to Guia Hill from Rua do Campo in the main city centre. Take Rua de Ferreira do Amaral towards Royal Macau Hotel. Pass the hotel and continue to Hotel Guia on Calcado do Gaio. At the hotel, you'll see the continued ascending street to the base of Guia Hill and its attractions. From there you can walk up a zigzag of cobblestoned walkway to the entrance of the fort.
Note: For a more leisurely and faster way up Guia Hill, you can ride the cable car (MOP2 one way, MOP3 return). The cable car lower station is situated at the entrance to Flora Garden located on Rua de Ferreira do Amaral. This is a fun way to ascend the hill and a good option for families visiting Macau and in search of child...

As a global traveler, I cherish correct designations of historical landmarks, monuments, edifices and the like.
Given the loads of e-garbage today, responsible and proactive oversight by Google Maps in correcting errors is truly honorable 👏👏👏.

The CORRECT NAME is FORTALEZA DA GUIA or Guia Fortress in English. Google Maps made a blunder by reducing the name of the place as “Guia Lighthouse”.
The fortress is real a HISTORICAL MILITARY FORT. It was built in early 1600’s to guard Macau territory after a Dutch attempt failed to capture the territory. Guia is the hill upon which the fort is built.
The lighthouse tower is a VERY LATE ADDITION to the fortress complex. The lighthouse was erected in the early 1800s, 2 centuries after the fort!!!
Inside the fort is a chapel built around the same time as the fortress, the Capela Nossa Senhora da Guia or Chapel of Our Lady of Guia Hill. As is the practice during Portuguese colonization, military conquests always are enforced together with the catholic church proselytizing practices.
The Guia Fortaleza complex has been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As Guia Hill is the highest point of Macau, it offers a great vantage point for a panoramic view and f Macau.
The surrounding gardens and footpaths are a favorite of joggers, walkers...
Read moreThis place was awesome! Prepare to walk uphill though but it is worth it. Bundle up as well because it can get really cold and windy. The fortress and light house are cool places to see but there are also a lot of gym equipment installed here that you can use for free. I see many people - young and old using them and jogging here.
The place is very well maintained. Cable cars are also available but the day we visited, they were none operational because of the weather conditions. There was no rain but super strong winds so that was unfortunate. Still worth visiting though when you visit Macao.
No entrance fee. The cable cars do have a fee, if I recall, 2...
