Hostel Monteverde Backpackers — Hotel in Monteverde

Good facility but very bad hostel manager

I think this hostel have good facility. Just good, not best. But I got so terrible experience at this hostel. What happen? Usually I don't book any tour at hostel. Because I wanna book at more professional travel agency. They have good information and good price. Yeah, I tried at monteverde, too. And I can get good price and specifically explaining from one of travel agency. Night walk, 2 zip-lining tour, hanging bridge and so on. Paid already. Maybe i got discount 10-15$.

At the night, I waited collectivo which picked up to night tour in hostel's lobby. At this time, hostel manager asked to me. "Where are you going now?" So I answered, "Go to Nightwalk." And he said "why you don't book here?" I felt so aghast, why he asked me about that? But I answer with honesty. "I think Another agency is more cheap. Just it." I didn't realize that my answer will bring terrible thing. When I came back to hostel, hostel manager come to me, he said "you have to pay full-charge to zip-lining company at tomorrow morning. Because you got a discounting." ??? What? I really don't understand that. So I asked to him."why? What's the problem?" And he said, "here, monteverde, we have standard price. No discount. So you have to pay full-charge, and you'll get refund at travel agency." Oh my god. What the hell. I asked him "costa rica is democracy country. Right? It's like a consulting price. Any travel agency no competition? Is it true?" He said "yes. This is rules of monteverde." Wow.. yeah, I couldn't believe that. And I think about that 'how does zip-lining company know that I got a discount?' The answer is 'This hostel called to company for interrupting my trip.' I asked him. "Did you call to company?" But he said No. I think it is lie. So i get out from this talking and go to my room. Surprisingly my roommate said to me "I saw that he called to company in spanish. Maybe he want to interrupt your trip. It's too bad." Hahaha... I think so. After day, I tried to enter zip-lining. Of course, they asked me, 'Do you pay to full charge?" I answered. 'Yes, I got discount just for Night-tour at yesterday. What happen?' 'Your hostel manager called to me at last night. Maybe he felt very upset. So if you got discount, plz keep your secret.' Yeah, I prove that hostel manager is too greedy and bad.

I know and understand that hostel manager felt jealous. But that's it. I think hostel is hostel, agency is agency. Do you agree that? But this hostel couldn't think about that. They want just getting more little bit money. I feel really upset until leaving monteverde. It is not fair. Why interrupt to consumers. It is too bad. Pura vida? No. If you book at another place and you tell to hostel manager, you can get puta vida.

By the way, I think hostel's condition is good. I'm honesty. But you must don't book tour at this hostel. You cannot get any discount. Why? It is here's rule. If you get discount at this hostel, he prove he is lier. So.... why you book tour at this hostel? Just go to other travel agency and get more cheaper price and more kindness explaining. If you got it, please keep(you must) your secret. It is best way for traveling monteverde. And it is...

The hostel is horrible. The owners allow their friends and families to be in the entrance hall and kitchen all the time and make a lot of noise during daytime (incl. kids walking into your room and start to watch you tube films lauging very koud, while I was on the phone at the same table😳. They also felt like pressing on me to take their tours, only trying to get the money out of my pocket in theirs! And when I had questions trying to do my best with spanish, they shook their head and made a fool of me. The nights here are cold and they provided only a thin fleece blanket. I didn't feel free to use one of the other blankets from an other (free)bed, because it felt like they would charge me for the other bed as well. When I found the toilet stuck with toilet paper and told them, they were mad at me because I think they thought I had put toiletpaper in there, wich I didn't. (The pipes here in Costa rica have a small diameter and therefore you can't flush your papers anywhere). ||||The only good thing was I had a 3pers. dorm for myself, because there were not many people staying around. And the streetnoises were not too loud. Matrasses are ok, bit hard (thick enough), but covered with cracking plastic underneath the sheets. They provide a simpele breakfast: bread(sometimes old but no toaster)marmelade, butter, milk, cornflakes, coffee and 1 banana. Rest is not limited. Tea you have to make yourself. The kitchen is having 2 pits to cook, very little if the whole hostel is booked. And it has nothing there to light the fire. 2 showers and 2 toilets.||||There is a tourist office in town to get non 'prefered' information, that is were I did my bookings. ||||I wouldn't recomand anyone...

We had a booking on Hostelworld made months in advance, but upon showing up, the receptionist told us the price would be twice as much. I asked them why and that I have a valid booking with a different price. He said he would call the manager and that we could go to the beds in the meantime. All beds were taken. We informed the receptionist and he said to take care of it.||In the meantime, the manager Alonso showed up. He said he would only give us the room for twice the price. We refused of course and told him to honor the booking and that twice the price was insane for a dorm. He said to pay or cancel. I told him that I would not cancel, because I had already paid a deposit. He then told us to come back tomorrow? For what, so that he could mark us as no-show? The whole thing felt like a scam, especially since the receptionist had let it slip that this happened before. We refused to pay twice the price and to cancel ourselves, at which point he shouted at us to leave. We left the premises and easily found a private room for the price of a dorm somewhere else.||As such, I cannot recommend anyone to go to Monteverde Backpackers. The manager is ill-tempered and the whole thing felt like a scam. Don't be fooled by the cheap price online, they will try to make you pay more than you do...
