I did a lot of research in selecting a place to stay and finally selected Maria Di. I'm very glad we did. The accommodations were great and everything worked very well. The Wi-Fi was solid and dependable, the hot water never faltered, the AC was cold, etc. We went on to a 4-star hotel in Zagreb after this and it wasn't as nice. As people say, it's about a 15-20 minute walk to the old city. Downhill that's no problem, uphill, in a heat wave, we took our time. We did take a cab once and it was less than $10, so even if you took a cab every time, the room is still cheaper than staying downtown. We walked down by bypassing the first set of stairs and walking down the large stairs in view of the wall, which I think was a nicer view and had lots of places to sit, if needed.||||We had the room with the balcony, which was great. Great view and a good place to dry laundry ;). The bathroom was across the hall, but not a huge deal.||||There is a grocery store less than a block away, which was very handy and inexpensive. If you are looking for a meal close, we had breakfast twice at the Italiana restaurant (right across from the Oryx rent a car). The prices were good and the people were very nice (a man and his mother). They also serve lunch and dinner, but we didn't have them.||||I was wondering before I went if shorts would be okay. Believe me, they are! It's a coastal town and everyone is in shorts, though they dress up a little more at night (sundresses, collard shirts, e.g.), though this is not required. The other great place we ate was Pizza Oliva in the old city.||||Overall, you will love Dubrovnik and Maria Di is a great place to enjoy it. I do recommend having them arrange a taxi since the place is small and has no sign. This way the driver knows exactly...
Read moreWe stayed here for a weekend break at the end of July. The house has three (I think) rooms, which share a kitchen. Our room was en suite. The room was comfortable, with a sea view. There is a powerful air conditioner, though we tried as far as possible just to leave the windows open instead of using it. The shower-room is compact but well designed, with hot water quickly available at all times.||The shared kitchen is very well equipped - unlike most apartment kitchens, it has pretty much everything you would have in your own kitchen.||A really nice touch is that the owners provide coffee for the machine (I'm not keen on capsule coffee machines, but it probably makes sense in a shared kitchen) - for us coffee addicts, that makes a huge difference :)||There is a terrace with tables - and you may get a visit from a tortoise or two.||Maria, her mother and her brother (who help her) are exceptionally welcoming and helpful - we were able to get in early, and greeted with a bottle of the family's own wine (which is a robust, fruity and tannic red quite comparable with many of the local wines I had in restaurants). When we left, they kindly kept our bags in the family house next door until our evening flight.||||A tip if you have not been to Dubrovnik before: it is important to realize that any "street" perpendicular to the shore is most likely a staircase - if you take an "obvious" route from the airport bus-stop, you will be hauling your luggage up a couple of hundred steps. If you have a wheely case, you can avoid most of this by retracing the bus's route a bit to get on to the main road Zagrebačka and...
Read moreThis was a highlight of my trip. I stayed 5 nights here with the delightful family-run guesthouse (family's house right next door if you need anything). Daughter Maria was available for any questions and completely delightful. My room was clean, modern and I has my own private new bathroom with spacious shower. The room upstairs has a lovely balcony where I unwond each evening with a glass of wine-- Maria gave me a bottle of her family's red wine! I enjoyed a glass every night on my balcony overlooking the Adriatic. The guest house is about 12-15 minute walk to the Old City. Dubrovnik is a city of STAIRS but the walk from this guesthouse was minor incline (coming home) compared to other areas. Even if you stay IN the old city you could have LOTS of stairs to climb. Lovely accommodation with a local family run guesthouse. It was also QUIET.... good quality sleep. Highly...
