I would not recommend staying at Heritage Hotel Cardo. I booked my reservation a month prior to arrival with the plan to stay in the walls of the city. We did not have phone service when we got to Croatia. We used WhatsApp to communicate. We had a driver who called on our way to check into the hotel to find out where he should drop our bags since the hotel is in a no driving zone. He was informed (all in Croatian)by Ivan, in reception, that our reservations were canceled for the hotel, and we were being placed at another hotel. My driver told him that the guests would not be happy about that. Ivan then requested to speak to me and informed me of this. I requested to be placed at the hotel that I booked. He stated it was not possible because they were overbooked. He noted that they were placing us at a hotel of “same standard” as I had booked. Fermai is the hotel they placed us at, which is NOT the same type as what I booked. It is not in the city walls, it is a 7 minute walk away. While people might not think that to be a big deal, when you are tired late at night, it is nice to just be able to walk into your hotel from the center Square. Also, the decor at Heritage Hotel Cordo has a much more renaissance feel. The decor at hotel Fermai is much more modern, which is exactly what I did not want. The hotel room that we were placed at was also cheaper than what I booked.
When I continued to request the room I booked Ivan then lied and said that my reservation was the “last reservation that came in” Mind you, I booked one month ahead. When I told him that, he lied again and said that the computer system “was not working that day(a month ago) and that is why they did not realize they overbooked.” He then said he called my agency that I worked with and notified them of the change earlier that day, as if that automatically makes everything fine.(again i have no cell service in Croatia to receive calls) He knew I was unhappy with the situation, so he asked in an insulting manner “would you like the most expensive room in hotel Fermai” since he must have thought that would assuage me. I responded that “I would not, I would like the room that I booked @ Heriatage Hotel Cordo.” He then said that was not possible again, and HUNG UP the phone on me. Ivan is a rude, unprofessional liar. I would not recommend spending your money at a hotel that has employees who treat guests in such a manner. I attached picture of the room we were sent to, and the view from that room. what a disappointment for a...
Read moreWe had a fantastic one-night stay in this small hotel. Location: you could not get more central to the main square than this hotel. It is meters away with a view from our room down the street leading to the cathedral square and main place to buy tickets. Despite the street and the potential for noise, it was dead quiet in the hotel. I think it is a pretty new renovation, and the sound proofing is superb.
The room itself was equally good. It had an amazing shower with four different water sources. It was also a treat to have Netflix, which is not a given. Bed was comfortable and plenty of room for bags.
Breakfast was around the corner (two minutes) and was also excellent, if not too much food: a three course breakfast menu? All very tasty.
My biggest praise however goes to the front desk. The woman who greeted us was very friendly and helpful, and crucially she and the hotel were kind enough to let us leave our luggage there after check out as our flight was not going until late in the afternoon. Not only that, but they also allowed my son to come leave his backpack there even though he hadn’t even stayed there! Finally, we came back from a hot day at Trogir and rather than just helping us get our bags the receptionist saw that we were hot from the day and immediately offered us (remember, we were no longer guests as we had checked out) a cold bottle of water and invited us to stay in the cool reception for as long as we liked. Really exceptional, and to me reflects the value at a staying at a small (five rooms, I...
Read moreThe fabulous location of Hotel Cardo allows residents to explore the Diocletian's Palace at their leisure, including in the brief period of peace before the arrival of the bulk of the Palace’s visitors. It really transformed our experience of Split to be able to visit the Peristyle and cathedral in relative solitude. | |Of course, there are some compromises that come with being located in such an ancient area. Our bathroom was a little whiffy and the small footprint of the hotel means that facilities are essentially limited to the rooms. However, the charming staff ensure that guests are well looked after. Their love and knowledge of the city certainly infused us with an appreciation for all that Split has to offer. ||An excellent breakfast is provided by the hotel at a welcoming local café. My only critical observation would relate to the strict “one-drink” policy of the café – it would be nice to be offered a second or third coffee (as you typically would be if taking breakfast in a hotel), rather than having to request and pay for one as an extra.||Our room was spacious and historic, with a large, luxurious bathroom. Our windows opened onto the steps which lead to the entrance to the hotel. That’s not ideal from a privacy perspective, but it’s not like the ancient building can be remodelled at this point in its history. ||We really relished the opportunity to stay in such a beautiful building in the midst of one of the greatest surviving structures from...
