Over the last three months, I spent three weekends in Santo Domingo, a short flight or 12 hour ferry ride from San Juan, Puerto Rico, my home base. Stayed at a different hotel each stay (each no more than $100 per night), every hotel a 2 to 5 minute walk to El Conde (a pedestrian street and center of the colonial zone, very close to a huge variety of restaurant, nightlife and cultural options). The room had a bit of a moldy smell, but the weekend I was there, Santo Domingo was flooded by rain storm after rain storm - so maybe not anything you would notice under normal weather conditions. The building is not as "newly renovated" as the other hotels I stayed in, but when it comes to an ambiance and architecture that is a perfect fit for a stay in the colonial sector, this is the place to be. The restaurant onsite is a bit of a joke - a menu where a $12 tuna sandwich was the highlight (surprise, surprise, I never saw a customer or employee in the restaurant area other than for the limited breakfast included in some room price options), the glass of wine I ordered in the small lobby bar came from a bottle probably opened 3 months earlier, but who cares, there are dozens of bars and restaurants within spitting distance. The room itself (I opted for the cheapest room available) was generous in size, accessible by elevator or steps, and had all the basics (safe, nice bathroom, decent bed, and cable TV). The Queen of England would probably pick a more sterile and modern option, but if you are an Indiana Jones type of person, this may become your favorite place to stay in the colonial zone. And if you are single, and you meet someone you may want to invite to your room, the hotel offers you the option to do so. For a $25 fee. Most other hotels do not permit anyone other than registered guests in the rooms. Guests leave their ID with the reception, so its not a policy that impacts your or the other guests' safety. In conclusion, a perfect location, a historic building and an ambiance that perfectly matches the surroundings. BTW, Uber is the absolute best choice for a return trip to the airport from any hotel in Santo Domingo - if you prefer a taxi, the hotel can arrange that as another safe but slightly pricier option as well. (The hotel offers some higher priced rooms/suites as well, some with very large balcony terraces - a somewhat unique option in this area for those who really needs a...
Read moreBeautiful colonial style hotel smack in the middle of Zona Colonial with included free garage parking! If you are looking for the latest amenities and technology, this is not the place for you. If you are looking to embrace the architecture, vibe and style of an older construction then this place is outstanding. Beautiful center area with palm trees growing through the middle and visible from all rooms. Really transports you to another era. Reminded me of the movie “original sin”
The staff was super friendly. The rooms were good enough to be comfortable, i mean it is not like you will be spending your time in the room. The breakfast was tasty and included local staple foods as well as american staples. Plenty of interesting areas if you walk around the hotel and see all it has. Rooftop pool is a bit small but when my wife and son used it, they were the only ones there. Very interesting and beautiful hotel. Within 3 mins walking you will be at Calle Conde which is the main street. Within 5-10 mins walking you will be at Parque Colon where all the restaurants and bars are at. I never felt not safe in this area, we even forgat my sons backpack with my wifes phone in Calle Condo only to see that a local police officer was holding it 1.5hrs later when we realized. Bars, restaurants, nightclubs, stores, history, architecture are all within minutes of this hotel. You cannot go wrong here! Hopefully my small sample of photos do the place justice.

Read moreSTAY AWAY!!! Absolutely terrible and they cheated us. Don't be fooled by the pictures, this place is a dump! First room we were assigned:|(1) A/C didn't work. It was blazing hot.|(2) The person sent up to fix the A/C (the doorman, Luis) came into the room, played with the thermostat for 5 seconds then walked out of the room without looking at us or speaking. He did literally nothing.|(3) TV didn't work.|We complained and they assigned us a second room with a better A/C:|(1) No hot water.|(2) Showerhead broken so that it sprayed water all over the bathroom.|(3) Hardest bed I have EVER slept on.|(4) Construction site right outside the window.||Neither of us could sleep that night, so we decided to find another hotel. We offered to pay for the first night but politely asked to be refunded the last three nights. This is when the hotel manager cheated us:||First she said that we would have to take it up with Expedia. I said that I would have to ask the credit card company to cancel the charge. Then suddenly she was able to issue a refund after all. She gave us a print-out to sign where we would have paid for TWO nights not one. When I pointed out this "mistake" she did another print-out charging us for a single night. The price was still way too high. She claimed that she could only refund us the taxes for the first night and we would have to take it up with Expedia. This was bogus but we were sick of arguing and left.||Just looked at my credit card statement: They charged us the full amount for the room anyway. I'm going to get the charge...
