In a nutshell: Divine cuisine saves the day at Moi Sunrise, a Berlin eatery with a penchant for culinary highs and service lows. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster dining experience that's worth it just for the food.
To get there, the restaurant is located within a reasonable distance from Berlin Hauptbahnhof, the city's main train station. Various buses and trams can drop you nearby, so transportation should not be a hindrance.
Let's get the disheartening details out of the way first: The service. If ever a place has suffered from a Jekyll-and-Hyde complex, it’s Moi Sunrise. On the one hand, there's the labyrinthine inefficiency of the waitstaff—tables squashed so close you could eavesdrop on heart-to-hearts, a muddled reservation system that seems to serve no one, and a bewildering 24-minute wait to even place an order. On the evening we dined, the exterior garden—more reminiscent of a lavander-laden paradise than an urban eatery—remained frustratingly closed.
Moreover, there was a curious discrepancy between the tables: one had a billing issue, another received the wrong order. This seemingly confused the staff to a point where our simple act of ordering became a Herculean feat. We had to actively court attention, as if angling for a second date.
But oh, the kitchen! Here lies the restaurant's saving grace. What the service lacked in finesse, the culinary team more than made up for with an alacrity and expertise that was simply remarkable. Our mixed grill arrived in under 15 minutes, featuring an unannounced but absolutely delectable substitution of magret duck for the expected entrecote. Accompanying this were salmon, chicken schnitzel, shrimp, and a cornucopia of sides—including a salad elevated by whole cooked garlic cloves.
Drinks were less illustrious: the Hugo Spritz, en vogue in Europe, was served in a disappointingly small glass. Yet it was competent enough to not distract from the meal's main attractions.
Dessert was equally compelling. The "Dragonballs"—a sweet bean-filled dough, married harmoniously with whipped cream and raspberry—were an indulgent finale to an otherwise inconsistent experience.
So here's the final call: come for the food, bring an extra dose of patience for the service, and prepare for an intimate—bordering on invasive—dining atmosphere. Moi Sunrise may have its flaws, but the brilliance of its kitchen shines bright enough to make it...
Read moreOur visit to this restaurant was nothing short of a disaster. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the service was completely overwhelmed. We had to wait an eternity just to place our orders, and the staff seemed confused and disorganized throughout the night. The language barrier only made things worse.
The waitress didn’t pay attention while we were ordering, which resulted in several incorrect dishes being brought to the table. When we pointed out the mistakes, she initially tried to gaslight us into thinking we were wrong. She even poked at our sushi with my chopsticks before finally admitting the kitchen had made an error. Despite this, she insisted we pay for the roll we never ordered.
On top of that, we received a water bottle with no glasses, and a bottle of wine was left on the table, unopened and uncooled, with the expectation that we serve ourselves.
When it came time to pay, we were told multiple times that paying by card wasn’t possible due to “technical issues.” It was obvious the device was simply turned off. The waitress even asked us to walk to an ATM to get cash. At this point, our patience was gone, and we insisted on paying by card. Magically, we were then able to pay inside by card without any further “technical problems.”
Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences we’ve ever had. Poor service, miscommunication (in german), and a lack of professionalism throughout the night left us frustrated and dissatisfied. We won’t be...
Read moreA Family Dinner Ruined at Moi Sunrise
We ventured to Moi Sunrise for a family dinner, eager for some delicious sushi. Unfortunately, the entire experience turned into a frustrating debacle.
The first hurdle we faced was the menu. It seemed like it was written in a secret language – entirely German! With no English translation and staff seemingly too busy to translate, ordering became an exercise in charades.
The service throughout the evening was nothing short of atrocious. Placing our order felt like an eternity, and the wait for the food stretched on even longer.
But the most enraging aspect was the food itself. The quality of the ingredients matched the presentation – bland, uninspired, and frankly, offensive. It felt like they put zero effort into crafting even a decent meal.
We were looking forward to a fun family night out, but Moi Sunrise turned it into a frustrating mess. The baffling menu, the snail-paced service, and the atrocious food left us feeling cheated and disappointed.
This restaurant is a prime example of how to completely ruin a dining experience. Save your money and your tastebuds – avoid Moi Sunrise...
