The highlight of our stay was Thomas at the front desk. We walked in without a reservation as we'd had a terrible experience with City Apart Hotel which we'd actually booked. We ended up leaving the apart hotel.
Thomas scrambled to find us two rooms adjacent to one another, one for my wife and me and the other for my 13y old daughter. He showed us two sets of rooms.
Superior and privileged. The rooms were identical in size and amenities. The difference was the privileged rooms had king size beds and we were told overlooked the inner courtyard, while the superior rooms had twin beds that were moved close together and overlooked the street. The privileged rooms had daily replenishment of the minibar items which included soft drinks, chocolate, chips, water and beer.
It was late, we were tired, and we opted for the privileged rooms.
Low and behold, we were awoken early in the morning by noise coming through the window. It became evident that our rooms actually overlooked the back of the house area, the kitchen, storage shed and internal work space where staff hustled and bustled, workers sawed and hammered away at various metals and fixed broken chairs, tables and carried out other general repair work. I took photos of the gorgeous (being sarcastic) view.
I immediately went down to the lobby and asked for alternative accommodation, but the hotel was full. We were asked to wait until people checked out.
Another friendly face at the front desk was Imran. He was cordial and apologetic and eventually offered us an upgrade to a duplex on the 7th floor and an adjacent room for my daughter. We didn't like the space distribution in the duplex though. Both levels were cramped and the window overlooking the real courtyard was tiny. It wasn't an attractive alternative. So we stuck with our privileged rooms.
I can't really blame Thomas or Imran. The hotel was full and we were walk ins. I do however question the hotel's allocation of the claimed privileged rooms in a location that is noisy and overlooked the back area. Nothing privileged about that. I took some videos this morning of the repair work to give you an idea of the level of noise.
The mattresses in both rooms are sunken on the left and right, forming a small hill in the middle. The hotel ought to invest in new mattresses.
Breakfast was great. Quality, variety. Nothing left to be desired. We had dinner at the restaurant. The food was delicious.
The bar tender however needs a crash course on cocktails. We had dirty martinis that were horrible. We sent them back and he attempted to fix them, only to make them worse. The olive juice he used was bland, probably not the right olives. He added too much ice that made them overly watery. Eeew.
We only drank them cuz we paid the money. I then ordered a caipirinha. I figured it's hard to mess that up. Well, he did. So sour I cringed with every sip. Too much lime. Not enough brown sugar. And to boot, the noise he constantly made while he prepared drinks was deafening.
I complained to the waitress. I said your bartender is very noisy. She said well there's nothing we can do about that. I said well that isn't the answer I was looking for. She replied 'then what answer were you looking for?' Hospitality crash course needed here. No way to talk back to a guest. And bar tenders should not be banging and clanging to the point where one has to shout to be heard across the table.
I parked my car in the garage next door, as suggested by Thomas. As I tried to pay the next morning the machine wouldn't accept my card, and wouldn't take cash. I walked in and asked someone at the front office to help. He said sorry its not our problem. I had to leave my car there. Later that day I paid using my wife's car. But the garage door wouldn't open. I bumped into Thomas, and explained the problem. He walked over to the garage and helped me get out. Such a hospitable person. He also helped me the following day with the parking meter in the street. He really goes above and beyond. I wish there were more...
Read moreThis hotel had very clean rooms and all of the service staff were amazing. ie: cleaners and wait staff, the food was good too.
But, the room was very loud and the air-con was non-existent. I had to get room service to open our window so we could get some fresh air into our room.
Beyond our room, I saw a manager berating a cleaner in the lobby about a piece of paper on the floor that the poor guy hadn't even had the opportunity to see let alone pick up.
There are beggars (read scammers some of these people are clearly fraudulent) on every corner here and we were hassled every time we walked anywhere. I'd find another hotel if I had my time again.
It was disappointing to be treated so poorly during checkout by one of the reception team, and the parking payment system was a nightmare. It was during Oktoberfest, it was an early checkout, we were on the final leg of a month long overseas trip.
I was treated like a scumbag for asking if my parking could be validated. A young fellow at reception scoffed at me and spouted I was only entitled to a discount (which was what I meant, however my German is limited), and had to pay at the machine.
When I asked "Where is the machine?" he audibly sighed and pointed outside the main entrance and down to the right. I asked if there was another machine on the basement level where I was parked to which he replied arrogantly, "If there was don't you think I would have said so!?"
I wanted to throw my suitcase at him but instead, I just smiled, said, "Thanks" and walked away mildly frustrated.
After packing my luggage into the vehicle on the basement level, I decided to drive to the boom-gate and park close by the exit and then finalise payment. I walked to the boom-gate exit and then found a new style of head-f*ck.
A sign on the door to the room where the machine lies, says to use a credit card to open the door outside of normal hours. I was confused by this custom but decided to use my travel card (which was almost shot but had enough for parking) to get in and get this done.
Once inside I found that I could only use cash. So, I returned to my vehicle and got the last of our cash to pay. Used my credit card to gain access again, the cost of parking was 83 euro.
I inserted the 3 euro in coin followed by a 10 euro note and a 20 euro note, then a fifty euro note. The last note was spat out. I tried again, rejected. A different 50 euro note, nope.
I then realised that this machine does not accept notes of this denomination. I had to cancel my transaction to go in search of change. Instead of refunding my money a ticketed credit printed out that could only be redeemed at this machine. Which was fine in my case but seriously...?
Now I had to go back and see my new best friend at reception and plead for some smaller notes so that I could finally escape this labyrinth. Thankfully another attendant was present at the desk now too who was kind enough to help me out.
I once again accessed the machine using my card, used my credit ticket plus the smaller denomination notes and got the hell...
Read moreWe stayed at the Mercure Hotel Muenchen City Center for a 2 night stay in April 2025, and unfortunately it was disappointing.
While we enjoyed the larger room type and proximity to the train station, we were let down on many fronts.
CHILD-FRIENDLINESS rating 2/5: My mission is to rate how truly "family-friendly" it feels at the hotel when we travel as to provide honest reviews to other families/parents who may be planning vacation to the area. (personal opinion)
I'm sad to say that Mercure Hotel Muenchen City Center was not baby-friendly. When we travelled with our baby, we requested a travel crib, but instead, we were brought a foldable kid's bed. It wasn't the safest to have the baby in that, but thankfully the baby wasn't at a stage to be moving a lot/rolling yet, so we monitored her closely during our stay at night. I am unsure why we were brought that type of bed, which would have been fine if our child is older, but it felt odd, because we had emailed about a crib request in advance and was told it would be given. It was also the very end of our 2 month around the world trip, so by then, we were quite tired, and just felt that we'll take whatever was given and soon we'll be going home. I wish we did speak up at that time.
We also didn't sleep well for the 2 nights. The room felt humid, and damp, and had a strange moist odour in the room whenever we opened the door to get in. It felt uncomfortable to be honest. Our security box also wasn't working, so the staff had to bring in a replacement security box. Moreover, our kettle had some black stains on the inside ?mold, and we had to get that replaced. The staff was very responsive and apologetic.
The area also didn't feel very safe when we brought our child around to find a nearby restaurant, especially the streets further south of it and east of it.
Being an All Accor silver member, we were always granted drinks voucher to use, and at the hotel's restaurant, we were set a pretty low limit on what we can use it on for our drinks order. It was a stark contrast to another All Accor property right by the train station.
We will not be staying again, especially when it's a...
