I arrived in Hampi on the Paoulo nightbus at 4am. I asked the tuck-tuck driver to take me to Kiran Guest House, as its recommended in the Rough Guide as a good place for backpackers accommodation, and although its not the fanciest looking house it is in a good central position. I was met first by the old guy who runs it with his wife Sunita, and help from their adult children. No fuss or demands for payment on arrival and after a sleep I met the couple properly, and settled on R800 a night. ||||One of the first pluses is the fairly new Chill-out cafe, literally right next door and a great place to eat and hang out. I had breakfast there every day. Back to Kiran Guest House, which offers clean, basic rooms with ceiling fans, firm beds, dodgy plug sockets and more than adequate bathrooms, but all in need of re-painting. Don't be fooled by some of the management photos, the rooms aren't as pictured, but also don't let that put you off. The balcony on the first floor is a great place to escape the heat of the afternoon, and has Excellent views of the river and Virapushka Temple. The house is in Hampi Bazaar, so the restaurants and shops are literally round the corner, and other temples within short walks. ||||Sunita and her husband are a nice old couple who make time to talk, and run a respectable house. As mentioned in other reviews they are always around, so no worries about security, but they may switch the electric off to individual rooms if they think guests are out. Just talk to them though, and tell them your charging gadgets and not leaving the fan on unneccesarily. Bear in mind working Indians have to be more frugal, than wasteful Westerners. I came stumbling in at 10pm on first night, a little bit drunk, but they were cool about it. I saw them trying to quieten Russian guests about 10pm another night, but the guests quietly carried on talking so it wasn't an issue in the end. ||||A word about the monkeys! There are an annoying troop of them that patrol the roof's, and the guest house balcony. The dumb Russian women fed them bananas! DONT - they will come into the rooms to steal food. They are quite aggressive and only back down if you are holding a stick. ||||You can book tickets with Kiran, the son, who runs a Travel Agency/Change Bureau in the village. The house has Wi-fi and the next door cafe is a cool addition. The couple offer helpful advise, and are totally trustworthy. Although Sunita fusses a bit she helped me avoid a hold up, which may have made me miss my bus when I was leaving. The dogs are a bit noisy at night, but this a Backpackers Guest House, with local people running it, so dont stay here if your after something...
Read moreMe and my girlfriend stayed here for 2 nights in January. We arrived by night bus from Goa, and met my loads of auto drivers coming off the bus. We accepting one guy who offered to whiz us to a few places to stay within our price range (max £10 per night). After visiting 3 places to get a general feel for expectations within our price bracket, we went with Kieran's. ||||The room was basic, and the hot shower was a little more than a dribble at best, but the room was clean, great mosquito net and nice big bed. We payed £9 per night during high season, which was good value for the time of year. ||||What really made this little guesthouse stand out at the bottom of the street was the family who ran it. They made no end of attempting to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We would arrive and leave with a warm welcome and a chat about our day. They sorted out bus tickets to our next destination. And even when we checked out after 2 days to stay over at the north of the river, they offered to look after our bags whilst we took smaller bags with us for the one night on the other side. So nice of them, I would...
