Mixed feelings about this oneโ€ฆ

It is hard to to speak negatively about a place that was part of a once in a lifetime dream vacation. However, Hotel Imperial Tramontano failed to do the little things that could have easily made this a much more unforgettable experience. Instead, I will remember the details this Hotel completely missed on.

The good:

Location - Unbeatable.

We used Sorrento as a home-base for all of our Amalfi coast adventures and relied heavily on the port to catch the many ferries to the different towns along the coast. The Hotel is very close to the port. Additionally, The beaches were right in front and therefore we did not have to walk much for some sun and water. Easy short walks to all restaurants, gelatos and other points of interest.

The Views - Breathtaking.

The Hotel is right on the edge of the coast and therefore the views from the room, bar/restaurant and breakfast were incredible. I still cant believe we woke up to these amazing views every morning. Also, since the hotel is right on the edge, every time you see pictures of Sorrento, you will see your hotel. This will surely bring back memories.

Breakfast - Clutch.

Having breakfast included meant we can fill our bellies before going on any excursions. The staff working the buffet was nice, food was okโ€ฆ it got the job done.

The Bad:

Service - Not very welcoming or accommodating.

This Hotel was not cheap. Specially in primetime season. Additionally, We are not difficult to deal with. However, it felt as if any inquiry or request was received with disdain or some sort of sigh.

Im talking about simple stuff like: How do we get down to the beach? Do you have a wine bottle opener? (They donโ€™t. You have to come down to the bar to open your bottle) Can we have wine glasses? ( You canโ€™t. You need to use paper cups in the room) The AC is not working. How do we get it going?

By the second day we were super scared to ask for any information at the front desk.

There is also an elevator that takes you down to the beach that NO ONE told us about until check out! This was extremely an extremely disappointing discovery as we walked down to the beach and/port several over a dozen times during our stay.

WATER:

No water bottles! Listen, I donโ€™t look for free stuff but no water? Like at all?

The Noise - Its loud.

Hoping to sleep in? Definitely will not happen. The staff is up bright and early and they want you to know it. People shouting, carts moving, slamming doors and all sorts of other random sounds are the norm in the mornings. You will not sleep past 7:30 am.

The Room - Unimpressed

Its a cute room. However, it is very outdated. Do not expect any of the fancy stuff.

Bathroom - ha bisogno di miglioramento

This is by FAR the worst thing about the rooms. This shower/tub combo is something I have never seen before. But if you like weird showers then you get to enjoy this capsule like contraption with no space. Also, it is slightly elevated and stepping out feels life threatening. Good luck!

Overall I would rate my stay 3/5. HOWEVER, this is solely based on the fact that we had a sea view room. That was the highlight for me. If you are not booking a sea view room, I would...

We love Italy and we love Sorrento, and this was our third visit to the town. We chose the Tramontano this time as it appeared to offer a central, accessible location, and we were right. Everything was within easy reach so that ticked a huge box for us.||The Tramontano itself was superb and we enjoyed our stay tremendously, but our first impression of room 102 was mixed. It was very small with just enough space for one person to walk around the bed. There was also extremely limited wardrobe space and nowhere to hang summer dresses at full length. There was a safe in the room and also a mini-fridge, which was very welcome as I need to keep some of my medication under a below a certain temperature, but as Brits we were disappointed that there wasnโ€™t a kettle in the room for our morning cuppa.||However, when we walked out on the balcony, it took our breath away. It had a table and two chairs, which you would expect, but it also had two loungers. It was also a fantastic size and it was totally private so we couldnโ€™t see or hear the people on either side of us. ||The view over the bay of Naples to Vesuvius was totally uninterrupted and totally stunning. It was beautiful at any time of day or night, but my favourite was one morning, when escaping my husband's restless legs, I witnessed the sunrise over the bay with swifts swooping and calling in the early light - simply magical.||We spent most of our days around the pool and Marcello, Domenico and Luigi kept us fed and watered admirably and Francesco tended to our need for shade as we were in Sorrento during a heat wave. They were so friendly and welcoming and couldnโ€™t do enough for us. I have endless admiration for Luigi who was still cheerful despite being in a hot kitchen in 40-degree heat. The gardens are absolutely lush so it was lunch with the most beautiful view.||We stayed bed and breakfast and didnโ€™t eat in the restaurant at night, but we were greeted each morning with a lovely breakfast and again, the most fantastic view. Maurizio, Alessandro, Emilio and Serena deserve special mention and were so very welcoming and helpful. Quite how they remembered what all their guestsโ€™ preferences were for breakfast, Iโ€™m not sure, especially when we kept changing our minds.||Carla, Rosanna, Giuseppe and Vito on reception also tended to our every need and nothing was too much trouble.||We had no idea about the history of the hotel before we went, but as Torna a Surriento was written at the hotel, it seemed wrong not to try Pasqualeโ€™s signature Torna a Surriento cocktail, which is a must-have if you go. ||The bar itself was a beautiful room, but we tended to spend our time out on the terrace looking at that fantastic view over to the volcano. Virginia and Francesca also deserve a special mention for looking after my craving for Limoncello Spritz (it never tastes quite the same in the UK). ||I have no doubt that we will return to Sorrento (again), and if at all possible, it will be to the Imperial Hotel Tramontano. The small room made no difference in the end as we spent so little time in it, but we will try for a bigger...

Overall 1/5 - We had 2-3hrs of noise keeping us up until 1am each night we were there (4 nights). First job hotel has is quiet - and this one is not quiet, so for that reason 1/5. Detailed review: Clean 5/5 - It was clean - A touch musty in the basement level we were in. Quiet 1/5 - Ocean balcony rooms below the Terrace listen to iron chairs dragging on the floor until 1am. So no napping or going to bed early. We go to bed at 10:30 so this was a major frustration. - We talked to staff several times about it to no avail. Would not accomodate a room move. We werenโ€™t going to go talk to people having a lovely time on the terrace. They would have no idea there are bedrooms in the basement of the hotel. - Walls are paper thin. Youโ€™ll hear neighbors talking, coughing, flushingโ€ฆ.. etc Service/Staff 1/5 - Aloof and unhelpful at every interaction. Without going into every detail, we found asking for routine help (like changing a 20 euro bill etc) felt like an imposition. In fact, they refused to make change telling us to go to the market. Comfy Beds 2/5 - Old saggy beds. Pillows old and sagged. Both of us had poor sleep Views (if ocean balcony) 3/5 - if you have an ocean view, itโ€™s beautiful. - You will however, have American Top 40 music playing all day until 10pm when the beach clubs below shut down. Not the end of the world, but not the quiet waves crashing on the shore we pictured. Location 5/5 - Quick walk to main market. - Cab can get right to front door of hotel. Pool 3/5 - Itโ€™s okay. Itโ€™s a very small pool in a garden setting - Overzealous pool attendants will tell you where to sit - Closes early at 6pm Value 2/5 - This hotel will nickel and dime you for services - Breakfast is sub par, even for a two or three star hotel. Our three star hotel in Rome absolutely blew this out of the water. Some premium hotels have a โ€˜we are going to make you feel like royaltyโ€™ approach with kind and attentive staff who really make you feel comfortable and enjoy the experience. Others feel very much like โ€˜we only care if you are royaltyโ€™. This hotel is in that latter category. By contrast, hotels like The Hotel Floridiana in Capri do it right. Welcomed with table service cold drinks and snacks on the balcony. They sit down with you to show you a map of Capri and answer questions. Unbelievable front desk staff who suggest dinner spots and book reservations. Whatsapp chat anytime you need something. Really enjoyed our time in Sorrento - but wonโ€™t be back to this hotel in the future.

The ambience and architecture was beautiful. The bedroom was in keeping with the style and decor of the hotel. The bedroom was very clean and the AC was outstanding. The terrace was lovely too however I faced out on to essentially what was used as car park. Again this is an older hotel so you can appreciate parking didnโ€™t factor back when it was built. The bar and terrace was picturesque and I loved enjoying a pre dinner and late night drink. The pool was clean and area well maintained with restaurant right there offering tasty food. The elevator down to the beach front was amazing & a huge plus to the hotel as beach is busy and accessing it from the street can be impossible at peak times. Given the age of the property I appreciate that the walls were thin however it was exceptionally noisy in my room on the ground floor facing to the street. A hotel bar across the road played music until around 12am & you did feel like you were right in the middle of that dance floor so light sleepers beware. I was early for check in so I was allowed to use facilities (I was told about the towel policy so it canโ€™t be daunting knowing what to do) and baggage hold however when I did go to check in I was given my key and had to enquire myself about Wi-Fi, breakfast and location of breakfast room. This wouldnโ€™t be my experience with 4-5 star hotels. Due to weather my boat trip was cancelled which is out of anyoneโ€™s control however there were other tours available at the time I emailed and there was no effort to see if I could do something else. I had to push and make enquires. When I did the woman at reception was more than helpful but Iโ€™ve stayed in other 4-5 star hotels where that service is just above par. I had a trip booked to Pompeii through the hotel and I let reception know I was waiting & they told me to stay at reception however when my car arrived the same person struggled to remember who the car was waiting for only I had heard my name from the driver and gone over. Overall it was a pleasant stay, the staff are polite if not over friendly. The location is great being right at the sea and on the edge of everything else, restaurants shops etc means that I had no real regret in staying here. Again light sleepers beware though as my ground floor bedroom wouldnโ€™t be ideal.
