After 1 week in Rome and 3 nights in Capri it was nice to arrive in Sorrento and finally not have the constant beckoning in to the resturant, which is an instant put off. Sorrento was so relaxed and fairly priced that we thought it was an ideal setting for the final week of our Italian holiday. We passed Ristorante Sorrento on the way the lift to the beach (where we ate at Leonelli's - which was very good and we highly recommend)
Firstly the waiter inviting you in is an indication that it isn't the usual Sorennto establishment, very vew of them do this as the quality and the return custom should speak for itself.
Anyway, we sit down and the beer is reasonable and the wine good, starters are mixed - fried baby squid and anchovies is upsold as having the 'local' baby squid, this is nice, but i doubt there is a difference apart from the €4 mark up. The Minestrone soup was terrible, do not order it, €10 for tepid tasteless product.
Mains, we were told that the 'local' caught Red Snapper at €25 cooked in foil with seafood was the way to go, very convincing up-selling, we had no reason to doubt, so we went with it. Big mistake, I know how big a red snapper is and this was a tenth of the size, for €25. I ordered a seasonal vegatable side dish which equated to half a grilled courgette for €4.50!
Pasta carbonara was a fistful of pasta with 5 bacon pieces in it! Woeful! Lasagne tasted like any frozen supermarket lasagne, and that is being disrespectful to some supermarkets!
We complained, the responses were two fold;
"This is Sorentto, it is expensive, that is what it is" - NO, having spent time in Rome and Capri we know what this is and it is by far the most unapetising, expensive meal we have had in the last 2 weeks (€202 for 4).
The foil is actuallty a plastic bag, that is presented to you on your plate - not the vision of culinary experience you want to unwrap.
All in all a leason learnt, but a bitter one. With only 4 nights left of our holiday, we are sad to have spent one in Ristorante Sorrento - please don't make the same mistake, avoid...
Read moreI see the restaurant is claiming they don’t have frozen pizza (questionable) ok so If that’s your gluten free option, tell people because not everyone wants that’s so don’t serve it unless people ask. Felt like eating a cookie with tomato paste and unmelted cheese on it. Is there even a pizzaiolo in house? Half a slice was all I could do based on texture and taste. My kid had 1 and said was full. Husband paid for full bill as they collected full plates and we watched owner counting his money outside next to our table as the server gave us receipt apologizing for us not eating. I hear from people who own restaurants in Italy that more and more foreigners are catching on to owners not keeping up the authenticity and cutting corners to make more money by charging same for mediocre food thinking outsiders won’t tell the diff and guess what it’s because of owners like that who had us think Americans were spoiled and complaining for no reason just to be brats when they’d say they went to Italy and weren’t impressed by the food when they could have just been let down by a tourist trap like this. Not all food is bad here I’m sure but they’re pizza is barf. If you’re eating real food in Italy trust me u will be impressed every time. I’m impressed by the food at the auto grills (gas stations) Which we stoped off for on way home so the restaurants should be out of this world. The owner should be ashamed serving crap pizza in the...
Read moreWe attended in June 2025. We had passed several nights in a row and staff always try to get us in. Firstly we ordered still water the waitress returned and asked us 5 times was there 2 of us or 3. I thought she was never gona stop. We were at a table of 2. I was getting annoyed she kept continuously asking. She then poured the water which was sparkling water, we ordered still. Our waitor returned very apologetic with a bottle of still and poured us a glass each. my glass then had a fly in it. He apologised and went and got a fresh glass but did not replace the water which was now missing from the bottle. We ordered 2 margarita pizzas, as Italy how could you go wrong with that. To say the pizza was disgusting is an understatement. I have had way better from a supermarket it was truly awful. To drink I ordered 1 shot malibu and pure orange which came in separate glasses so was awkward trying to pour the orange into the malibu with ice without spilling. As if things could not get any worse we had to ask for the bill twice and when it came I was charged €9 for single shot of malibu and €7 for the orange juice that was €16 for a drink. Absolutly scandalous. our bill was €68 which was pretty expensive considering the standard of food. Avoid at all...
