Niigataya Ryokan — Local services in Kusatsu

After staying here 3 times per year for the past 2 years I decided to leave a review. I didn’t really want to leave a review so others don’t want to stay here, but I feel it’s only fair that I do. This is a small inn run by an elderly couple. They are 3rd generation owners. The original owners were from Niigata Prefecture, hence the name.

The meals, hospitality, and overall energy of this ryokan are unmatched. It is the only place I stay when I come to Kusatsu Onsen, unless they are fully booked. The couple will go above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need during your stay. I stayed as a solo western male traveler, and they made me feel like family. They usually only allow 1 or 2 groups to stay per day, so you need to make reservations far in advance by calling the inn directly.

The inn has 2 private baths, both are 100% directly flowing from the source (Yubatake). It is about a 5 minute walk from the center of the town. You can use the baths anytime of the day. Just go in and put the “Reserved” sign on the door, you don’t need to reserve the bath beforehand. The food here is the best and all homemade by the couple.

I hope this inn can continue to run forever and I hope that future generations will uphold and maintain this place the way it is now. It’s not a fancy inn, but it’s an inn that will make you fall in love with Kusatsu Onsen over and over...

もう何度来たかわからないくらいの大好きな草津。|今まで色々なお宿に泊まらせていただきましたが、ここが一番良かったかも。|もちろんお金を出せば相応のサービスは受けられますが、こんなにリーズナブルなのに、気持ち良く過ごさせてくださる旅館はあまりないと思います。|チェックインは14時からなのですが、早めに着いてしまった私たちを快くお部屋に案内してくれました。|畳のはりかえをなさったばかりとのことで…い草の香りが気持ちいい、素敵なお部屋でした。|私たちが到着した時にはまだお部屋の準備ができていなかったのですが、待っている間も自家製の紫蘇ジュースを出してくれて、お心遣いとても嬉しかったです。|部屋には冷蔵庫もお風呂もトイレもなかったですが、冷蔵庫は玄関入ってすぐのところにあるものを使わせてくれて、お風呂は源泉掛け流しの新鮮なお湯があり（とても小さなかわいいお風呂ですが、貸切で使えるので1人2人なら広々とつかれます）、お手洗いはとても綺麗な状態なので、何も気にすることなく気持ちよく過ごすことができました。|ご飯は2食とも食べきれない品数と量でした。|高級旅館とは違いますが、山の幸を味わえるとても美味しいご飯でした。|注意することといえばお湯の熱さでしょうか。|旅館もお風呂自体も小さいので、温度管理が難しいのかとてもとても熱いです。|でもそれは草津ではしょうがないことですね。|この旅館さんに限らず、湯めぐりしていてもどこも熱いものです。|冷めていない分成分は抜けておらず濃厚で、新鮮なお湯だと思います。|アメニティは期待しないで各自で用意した方が無難です。|歯ブラシ、ドライヤー、カミソリはありました。|お布団はふかふかで重さも感じず、シーツも清潔感があり、特に問題なかったです。|翌日チェックアウト後も荷物を置かせてくれて、その後雨が降った時には傘も貸してくださいました。||高級旅館とはまた違った素敵なおもてなしが受けられるお宿です...
