I haven't stayed in a lot of hotels but this was definitely my #2 favorite hotel stay. I stayed in the queen room.
I'm very particular about cleanliness so I looked everywhere for something off but I couldn't find hair or dust or anything anywhere! All the corners and hidden spots were impressively clean. If you're a clean freak you will feel safe here.
The hotel was beautiful and quiet. My room was comfy, and roomy. The bed was very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. I asked the younger man with glasses to help me book a reservation, I feel bad for how long it took him to help me (my fault, sorry!)
If you enjoy walking it's only a 20 min walk from Gion area, 11 mins from nishiki market and about 7 mins to the main shopping street. The only sad part is it's 10+ mins from train stations and bus stops, so if you have heavy luggage it's kind of a mission. Btw if you're going to the subway with luggage and google tells you to use entrance 15, go across the street and use the escalator in the mall!
The hotel has a tea room, but it is the only amenities it has to offer. The only thing that could make tis place better is an onsen.
There was a discount on my room during my stay so I'm very very grateful to have gotten the opportunity to stay. The next time I visit Kyoto I would choose to stay here if I can! I would highly recommend...
Read moreVery weird hotel policy on room service. If the cleaning service sees a “do not disturb” sign on the door they will simply take it as a “we don’t want any service for the rest of the day” instead of the more common interpretation of “we are not ready for room service” based on an arbitrary check during the morning hours rather than at the indicated deadline time. The result of this randomness is that guests are expected to accommodate the cleaning service rather than the other way around. Want to sleep a bit longer and not be disturbed? Tough luck if you would like a clean room. They will not have a second look at your room if they already did so well before the morning deadline (fun note: we were told that without the do-not-disturb sign they won’t even bother to knock and just enter the room for cleaning, even though they do have a separate cleaning sign). In a typical hotel experience in any other hotel getting the room cleaned wouldn’t be an issue as long as the right sign is put up before the deadline. After an argument (having English speaking staff is nice but the downside is increased rudeness) we had the cleaning scheduled. Obviously this should not be necessary to get basic services and could easily be solved by simply running a last check at the...
Read moreWe loved our stay at Machiya Ebisuya! Arriving was a bit of an adventure via bus. The location of the hotel was in a quiet area with access to many areas around Kyoto. The staff was INCREDIBLE! The hotel is beautiful and the tea room was so quaint. The room was beautiful with Japanese esthetic. Everything in the room itself had a purpose and made sense. The room was spacious and clean and offered many amenities. We were also very thankful for free laundry provided on the first floor.
The most important thing was that I accidentally left my jewelry box after checking out and we were already in a different place of the country. The staff reached out to us informing us of this and even went out of their way to have my jewelry shipped to where we were going. I’m so incredibly thankful to them for going above and beyond. Japanese hospitality at its finest.
PS) the pour over coffee in the room...
