Hanmer Springs Kakapo Lodge — Hotel in South Island

Liked · 4th visit here, and every time I am amazed at how clean, fresh and tidy the entire property, inside and out, is.||The beds are comfy, the kitchen spotless.||I must admit, it has always been summertime visits - so haven't had the opportunity to test the heat of the inviting looking woodburned in the main foyer area. But I can gather over winter ski season this would be amazing.||The hosts are a friendly family, who obviously take great pride in presenting their business to what I could call The Gold-Standard for cleanliness and comfort.||Towels are available for those in dorms for a small fee ($2.00 as at Feb 2025) and are provided free of charge for those in private rooms.||Bicycles are available for hire at a reasonable cost (booking needed) and there is also an on-site watch repair available.||There is also a nice outdoor bbq area, including tables etc to sit and soak up the sun.||It's a casual 10-minute stroll to the famous hot-pools, and the township with many restaurants, bars and cafes.||Hanmer Springs has much to offer, and Kakapo Lodge is where you can relax and unwind afterwards at a price that is budget friendly 🙂||I am certianly happy to rebook here at any opportunity, and can highly recommend this facility 💚💙||Disliked · Sandflies/mozzies - be sure to bring repellent as Hanmer Springs has lots of these...

We truly enjoyed our stay here. We are travelling with our 2 young kids and had 2 rooms (there wasn't anything else available), but that worked out fine.

The owners are very friendly and inviting and they run a tight ship together with the rest of the family. Which means, this hostel is always clean and tidy. We also enjoyed the spacious kitchen which has everything you need. Even the fridges are clean and organised. The beds are comfortable too and we had a good sleep. I just wish the walls weren't that thin. You can hear the conversation of your neighbour, especially when someone has a heavy voice.

Our kids absolutely enjoyed staying here. They became friends with the owner's grandchildren. The family lives in the same building and my kids were invited to play in the girls's room. They all had a blast.

The hostel is conveniently located in the same street of the pools, shops and supermarket. You won't need a car. Also, the animal park is close by.
