Not a great first impression. I booked this place 5 months in advance of the stay and unfortunately and unexpectedly I had to cancel my holiday due to work commitments. Merry's House cancellation policy stated no full refunds available but I literally begged the owner to make an exception due to the unforseen circumstances and the fact that there are still 5 months until the stay, so plenty of time and likelihood for someone else to book the room. I even suggested a shorter trip instead but she wanted to charge me the full 9 nights for a stay of 4 nights or to charge me 50% cancellation fee which is a lot of money. I was so disappointed with how unreasonable and unwilling the owner has been and how much she values money over people and common sense. If I wanted to cancel a week in advance I understand that she wouldn't have been able to accommodate my request, but with almost half a year in advance, I doubt that she couldn't have come up with a more reasonable resolution. I do not dispute the fact that the owner is a lovely person in general as I can read this from previous comments but it looks like she loses that friendliness when it comes to money. I am now left with trying to convince my entire organisation to move dates around and let me go on holiday so I wouldn't lose my...
Read moreWished that I’d had the pleasure of enjoying this place but due to COVID, could not travel to Portugal last June 2020. Via emails, was able to get a gift card to stay by Oct. 31/31 but no return of funds could be reimbursed as I had to cancel and they had no refunds in their policy despite it was NEVER my intention to cancel- the world/airlines cancelled this trip. We attempted to rebook at this place at the last possible timeframe but due to this world and all it’s uncertainties & COVID variants still a major concern, we had to reschedule again. We very much wanted to rebook in the spring of 2022 as felt travel and control over this variant would be safer by then. Tried to extend what we had already invested into this place but the owner would not entertain any of this. Actually had the nerve to say that she did us a great favour in extending the gift card for us to travel by Oct.2021 as it was a non refundable from the beginning. We had planned 3 weeks to visit Portugal twice at 5 different facilities across this country and everyone of them returned our money except Merry’s Place. Very disappointed and frankly, upset that it turned out this way. Human compassion and understanding that we all suffered from this worldwide crisis seemed to be lost on...
