Having visited on several occasions across several visits to Lagos, I’ve updated this review covering the latest experience in April 2024.
Original review: I can see why the Toucan burger is the winner of the top 50 burgers in the world! Plus the experience of actually being in the restaurant is quite something. Such a vibrant and excited atmosphere! Plus we really did have the best seats in the place. We sat at the end of the bar and saw all of the food being prepared, and wow every dish looked amazing! Plus the staff really were enjoying themselves in preparing and serving food and drinks, it was great to see and experience! I’m really looking forward to visiting again!
April 2024 update: Firstly, it’s still a great place, the burgers are still amazing, and I still highly recommend a visit, however I do so with some slight hesitation following the recent experience. The staff are still very polite and friendly. However, our starters were skipped, which was a shame as we looked forward to trying the Nah Nah Chos. More unfortunate was my guests experience, as there was something unusual in their beef burger patty which couldn’t be identified and wouldn’t normally be considered part of a high quality food source. Whilst perhaps a natural part of the beef process and a very isolated incident, it was an upsetting experience which made my guest nauseous and finally vomit. My guest didn’t want to make a big deal of it having just been sick, so I paid and we quickly left. I did make the staff aware of the situation as I felt it really tainted the experience. They offered a small discount off the offending burger but wouldn’t do more on the basis “they’d already eaten [half of] it”. Words that will stick with me for a while, and the encouragement to update this review. You have to see the funny side of things, ‘it’s okay to serve food that makes someone sick if they got to enjoy at least half of it’ 😆 It’s certainly put my guest off burgers for a while. Luckily we ate early in the evening, and were able to get them a light meal/snack elsewhere once they’d got past the experience. Looking past this isolated incident, I still recommend visiting, and i’m sure this experience won’t befall anyone else. I will hopefully visit again in the future, perhaps even with the same guest. Maybe we’ll even get to try the...
Read moreI was waiting with excitement for this place to reopen after holidays to try it out! I read they are a burger and cocktail place, but sadly only half of that is true. They are definitely a burger place, but it is no more a cocktail place than any local bar or pub. Their cocktail menu is just like 5 basic drinks you can get anywhere. The good part is that they pour strong! It's more burgers and beer.
So, not having at least a couple unique cocktails was a bit of a disappointment but not that bad. It was later at night and we were also slightly hungry so we ordered some snacks. The chips with garlic sauce were pretty good. Tasty and good crunch-to-soft ratio and I would order them again. We also got the tortilla chips and lime salsa. They were basically just cheese-powdered(?), off-brand "Doritos" with some sort of pico de gallo. I was hoping the chips were house-made and not just from a bag. Guacamole was tasty enough but the chips really let it down. Didn't really eat much because of the tortilla chips.
We saw many burgers going out and will try them one day. They seem gigantic! I don't know how people eat such massive burgers.
It was also too bad the music did not fit with the reggae/one love/Marley theme. It was all modern hiphop and was sort of the annoying kind. You are sitting in a really cool, uniquely and carefully decorated space with awesome branding (I love the dishes and everything!) but have to listen to music that is so unfitting with the vibes. Obviously, they put a lot of time and care into the theme so some reggae or more old-school music would have made it much better.
The staff were very friendly. I will come back to try a burger and maybe that is worth more stars. It's a chill spot and worth a try.
UPDATE: Okay, the burgers are huge and super tasty. 👌 Really...
Read moreYes, the burgers were delicious, which was to be fair why we went. What I wasn't expecting was the rest, which is my fault completely for not reading any reviews in advance and booking just on a 4.5 rating. Burgers 5/5. I challenge anyone to lower that score. We are a family of 3, ordered 1 All American, 1 Toucan Double and 1 plain. Wow. Nah Nah Chips 1/5. They are basically potato chips or crisps, as we say in the UK, covered in garlic sauce. Essentially, basement tortillas. Sorry, but that's a Nah from us. Seating: 2/5. Booked a reservation for 3, therefore call me old fashioned but I was hoping for a table. What we got was a long table for 10 people, with 1 long bench on each side, with each party separated by a sauce table stand. It's not a new concept as I see it in bars in London a lot, but I mistakenly thought it was a restaurant of sorts, not a bar. Ambience: 3/5: very loud, with a student bar type vibe, not for me and not really family friendly, especially for young children. Service: 4/5, pretty good, if a little impersonal Price: 2/5: 75 EU for 3 burgers and 3 drinks? I did have to check the final bill, but it was correct. Wow. That's a bit steep, especially as the one bag of crisps covered the total sum of the sides. Finally, and I can't think of a topic for this, but 1/5 for the literature on the menu. It feeds into the not-family-friendly narrative. Some of the descriptions have adult double-entendre descriptors such as 'rimming' and 'panty dropper' and 'my balls are blue, let's go upstairs'. Try explaining all that to the kids. I repeat, my fault for being an older parent, probably a bit stuffy now and not reading the reviews, it's just how I felt...
