An Absolute Gem in Porto!
My wife and I recently visited Porto and stayed at the Casa da Companhia for 3 nights. And what a wonderful stay it was! Rather than large, impersonal hotels, we prefer smaller, boutique-style hotels so that we and the staff get to recognize each other quickly and we can experience the more-personal service that smaller hotels can provide. The Casa da Companhia excelled in so many ways, beyond what we expected.
While the hotel is on the Ruas das Flores, a busy pedestrian walkway with many shops, bars, restaurants and other hotels, once you stepped inside to the wonderful atrium, the noise and commotion outside disappears. Each time you walk up to the front door, you are greeted by a doorman/host, who greets you, usually by name, with a smile and opens the entrance door for you.
The reception area, comprised of two desks, is one level up from the atrium. Check-in started with an offer of a drink and the entire check-in was completed within minutes. If I remember correctly, the woman who checked us in was Sofia. She could not have been more helpful outlining on a map, where the hotel was located and the obvious sites that we should visit. I mentioned that the next day (Sat) was my wife’s birthday, and Sofia promised to secure a reservation for us at a nice restaurant for Sat evening. Even though Porto was very busy and restaurant reservations were hard to come by when I tried before arriving, Sofia was able to come through for us.
Our room, a suite #215 if I remember correctly, was comprised of a living room and separate bedroom on floor 2. It was immaculately clean, well-furnished and included a small area that contained bottled water, snacks, a coffee machine and an ample supply of cups, glasses, etc. As mentioned earlier, despite being on a busy pedestrian way, we heard no noise from the people below.
The living room had a sofa as well as another chair, and there were tables in the room next to the chairs. There was a huge closet in this room with plenty of storage space and a safe. A large HDTV was mounted on the wall. One wall was all windows that provided plenty of natural light, and drapes that could be closed during the evening.
The large bedroom, with a king-sized bed also had a sitting chair and a wall-mounted HDTV. Each side of the bed had a side table and control panels that could control all the lights in the suite. These control panels also included 2 USB ports so that our phones and tablets could be charged overnight.
The bathroom was huge with a full tub. There were separate, enclosed areas for the toilet and shower. The were plush bathrobes and an ample supply of towels.
Breakfast in the morning was self-serve and was included in our reservation. It was delicious and the assortment of choices was large and geared to virtually all guests’ breakfast preferences. A very friendly waitstaff was available to take orders for coffee, tea, juices, smoothies, etc.. which came promptly. Th only issue during our entire stay was a toaster that didn’t work very well on our first morning, but a new (or repaired) one was there for the rest of our breakfast visits.
Saturday was our 2nd day at the hotel and, as I mentioned earlier, was my wife’s birthday. In addition to a very nice, hand-written birthday greeting, my wife also received a bottle of champagne and cake from the hotel to help us celebrate.
My wife and I travel extensively and the Casa da Companhia certainly is one of the best-run hotels and most enjoyable ones that we have stayed at. We have been to Portugal a number of times but this was our first visit to Porto. The hotel, its staff, accommodations and locations were all outstanding, and I am certain that we will return to Casa da Companhia on one of our return visits...

Dear Guest Relations Team at Casa da Companhia,
Thank you for your response. However, I must express my disappointment regarding the inconsistent and contradictory explanations provided by your team about my mother’s items that were left back items in the room. Each correspondence seems to add a new and conflicting detail.
When my mother first contacted the hotel about her belongings, the very next day she was informed that her items were “thrown away.” Later, this shifted to an explanation that they were discarded due to their “poor condition,” which was both inaccurate and offensive. Now, your latest response claims that the items were left in the trash bin, contradicting previous statements and calling into question the integrity of the hotel’s handling of this matter.
We also have documentation from Manuel Leite, the General Manager, explicitly stating that the items were “thrown away,” by the staff of the hotel (attaching the mail to this message) with no mention of a trash bin at that time. This inconsistency is both frustrating and concerning. The back-and-forth has made it difficult to get a clear answer, and I’m left feeling that our concerns were never taken seriously.
But given the conflicting responses and lack of clarity, I am left with no choice but to drop this matter entirely, though it has left a lasting negative impression. #IHGhotels #poorservice #lackofintegrity I am posting this on behalf of my mother who recently had a very disappointing experience with this IHG hotel in Porto, where my mother, Mrs. Meena Arumugam, stayed during her trip to Portugal. She stayed in room 423 from Oct 1 to Oct 3.
After a comfortable stay, she accidentally left behind some personal items in a drawer, including some valuable clothing (Levi's jeans, Mango trousers, and more).
The very next day, she contacted the hotel to inform them of the oversight. However, to our shock, the hotel claimed that the items had already been thrown away by the housekeeping team. It’s deeply troubling that such items would be discarded so quickly, especially when the guest reached out promptly to retrieve them. One would expect an IHG hotel of this standard to hold onto forgotten items for a few days at least, giving guests a reasonable chance to claim their belongings.
The emails exchanged with the hotel were even more disheartening, as the management seemed dismissive and confused about the situation, implying that the clothes were not in good condition. This is highly disrespectful considering these were personal items brought all the way from India, and no one should have to go through this kind of hassle after a stay.
While the accommodation was comfortable, this experience has left a lasting negative impression, and I hope the hotel takes steps to ensure that forgotten items are handled with more care and respect in the future. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through the...
