I did not know this was a historical Cafe when I ran in there to hide from the rain. But when I came in, I was greeted by a very courteous waiter who seated me in the middle of the dining room which at that time was almost empty.
I ended up ordering a rather large amount of food and that is something the waiter found curious as he looked at me questioningly. But the long lunch allowed me to observe the locals who came in for a bite. The long lunch gave me a chance to observe the locals, see what they order, see how they interact with each other; it was anthropologically very Illuminating. I did not order the francesinha, I do not like that sandwich. I did order a cuttlefish dish which wasn't bad, decidedly fresh though not particularly well cooked. The proportion of protein to starch and veggies was off, in favor of cuttlefish, surprisingly.

Read moreAviz, for me, has the best Vitela assada. Besides that, it is a cosy place, for a dinner for two or four, or more, tables can be joined. You can watch a football match if you'd like. The tables are placed a bit close to one another but I suppose they have to do so to fit in everyone who wants to have a bite. It can be quite full at dinner rush hour. The menu has plenty of fish choices, plates for meat lovers, snack food or some seafood. Vegetarians aren't overlooked either. Staff is usually very friendly and reasonably fast. Last time our waiter was a little forgetful and confused but I guess this can happen sometimes. Aviz, also close to the Porto neighborhood Galerias de Paris, with a very...
Read moreA traditional restaurant that doesn't appear in food guides. Aviz, despite being placed in the heart of la movida of Porto (very touristic area) keeps being a stand point for local culture. Same place as it was 30 years ago, same flavours, same quality and, above all, same service. The francesinha is BY FAR the best in the city, quality/price there's not a better place and flavour wise, if you want the real local experience, is the place to go. Don't expect a fashionable place, don't expect a glamour experience but sure do expect amazing food quality. That's the Porto standard and Aviz...
