The first thing you should be aware of is that this hotel is halfway up a big hill and the only access is by zigzag footpaths, so you have to drag your bags up behind you. We were told that it is close to the railway station and it is: but it's a steep climb to get there. They have a small hotel car park about halfway to the hotel alongside the footpath, but you can't drive to the door to unload your luggage. Unless you are young and fit (and some of the guests we saw certainly weren't that!) you should consider choosing somewhere nearer the main street.|We were given a room at the back with no view and this was disappointing. The room itself was OK though rather basic. A friend made the booking so I don't know what she booked, but we weren't happy though we didn't say so at the time.|We choose to shower in the evenings and ran the tap for ages, but eventually had to have cold showers because the hot water never came through. We were at the top of the building, which might have had something to do with it.|We enjoy pre-dinner drinks and they have a bar with an honesty system to pay for the drinks on checkout. The price list showed several wines as well as beer (of which there was plenty), but the only wine available was a bottle of fizz with about 6 cms. of wine left in the bottom; the rest on offer was beer or soft drinks of various kinds. At, I think from memory, about twelve Euros a glass I wasn't going to pay that and risk that the wine was flat! |Breakfast was OK, but the service was very slow. We ordered coffee when we first sat down, but it still hadn't arrived when we were finished so we went elsewhere for our shots of caffeine. We had been told we could order eggs to be cooked as we wished, but no-one ever came to take an order.|If we ever returned to this beautiful village we would stay...
Read moreIt is rare for me to leave a negative review, but months before we arrived a red flag went up when the hotel didn't respond to a simple question I asked - twice. Fortunately when we arrived, we met one of the house staff who had been cleaning our room, otherwise there was nobody at the front desk. This was true throughout most of our stay. Usually the keys for the various rooms would be left at the desk for self check-in. I am sure at one time this hotel was beautiful, but it is in desperate need of updating. I'm not sure of the other rooms, but for $300 per night I expected better. The view was outstanding, but that's true of many of the hotels in Grindelwald. The room was tiny and until I complained the shower was cold with very little pressure. This was rectified the next night. The bathroom door was heavy frosted glass and in need of repair as it had to be swing all the way open or it would spring back and hit you. No modern upgrades and I was glad I brought adapters so we could charge our USB items. Forget being able to connect to Netflix or Prime or any news channels in English. They did have wifi.
The brightest part of the whole experience was the 3 hotel staff who were always super busy cleaning and cooking and being part-time managers. Specifically Carolina. She saved the entire experience for us. Kind and as helpful as she could be! The breakfast is also very good!
The hill is steep to the hotel. You really don't need to get that kind of height to get the beautiful view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau though. There are many accomodations with views.
In all my travels, this was the first time I've ever left a day early. I should have requested a refund but that requires finding the manager or owner first and that...
Read moreI can’t say enough good things about my experience at Hotel Sonnenberg Grindelwald. From the moment I arrived, I was blown away by the stunning mountain views, the cozy alpine charm, and, most importantly, the incredible hospitality. This place truly feels like a hidden gem in Grindelwald.
A huge shoutout to George at the front desk. He was absolutely fantastic. From the start, he was warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful. He gave me some amazing recommendations for activities, helped with transportation, and just made sure I had everything I needed. You can tell he genuinely cares about the guests, which made a huge difference in my stay.
The room was perfect—clean, comfortable, and with a breathtaking view of the Alps. Waking up to that scenery every morning was something I’ll never forget. The bed was super comfy, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was peaceful and relaxing.
Breakfast was another highlight. Everything was fresh and delicious, with plenty of options to fuel a day of exploring. Sitting outside with a cup of coffee, taking in the mountain air—it doesn’t get much better than that.
I had an unforgettable stay. If you’re heading to Grindelwald, this is the place to stay. Can’t wait...
