Recently, my wife and I needed a vacation, so we chose to go to Grindelwald, Switzerland. My wife set everything up and reserved us a room at the Hotel Alpenhof because they accept pets. I had no idea how great it would be.
Although the name suggests it is a hotel, it was definitely a historical chalet in the valley near the Eiger mountain. Hotel Alpenhof was a few blocks from the downtown area and an amphitheater with live rock and folk music available. Our short walks to the city center were rewarded with great food and many stores to shop for gifts. A quick drive will get you to the primary gondola/train system, giving you access to the entire mountain, including the Top of Europe - Jungfraujoch.
At the hotel, it appeared that every room had a great view of the mountain. We could see the Eiger from our bed and from the balcony, which was lined with beautiful flowers. The staff provided our 11-year-old Corgi some complimentary food, which he enjoyed, so we purchased a bigger bag.
The staff was super friendly, and the owner lived in the adjacent lot. Breakfast was included with our stay and did not disappoint. We also had dinner at the hotel, but that is where our mistake revealed the true nature of the kitchen and restaurant staff.
Typically, when we eat somewhere new, we alert the person taking our order that we are vegetarian. In this case, we assumed that the item we ordered had no meat, but when our Älplermagronen mit Apfelmus (macaroni and cheese with apple sauce) came out, it had ham in it. Overly embarrassed by our mistake, plus the fact the global pandemic reduced staff and food items, we told the waitress that we do not eat meat. She assured us it was alright and had the cook make us two new dishes without meat and did not charge us for our error. (Don't worry, we left a big tip to make up for our mistake).
This vacation was my favorite, and we have been all over the world. There is no doubt that the Hotel Alpenhof and the friendly employees made the trip so much better than it could have been. They raised my rating from 8 out of 10 to 10 out of 10, and I highly recommend you stay at the Hotel Alpenhof in Grindelwald if you visit the Jungfrau region of...
Read moresome staff are very unfriendly. There was an incident that we used laundry (the machine is unlocked and there is no clear sign of charge) but didn’t know there is a charge. They didn’t tell us or ask if we know and directly put the charge on the bill. When we found out the charge, they just blamed us using it without asking and charged us for 3 hours. There was long enough time for them to come and ask us and alert for the charge. Money is small amount but we are new to this place, and there may be some miscommunication which is normal. Their first response is always to blame the customer and make guest feel very offended and frustrated.||Another incident was that our room was not clean when we were out whole morning and back at 2pm. We called the reception and they told us they have their own order which I accepted and we requested them to come and clean when we would go out again at 4pm. They said they cannot because staff will be off by 4pm and with no intention to make the guests feel better by apology for the inconvenience . At the end we needed to leave the room early so they can clean. ||There is certainly better way to...
Read moreHotel Alpenhof is a classic Swiss mountain hotel - lots of pine paneling and flower boxes on the windows. It has a small restaurant that serves Swiss specialties at dinner and a nice breakfast buffet. But, best of all, it has killer views of the north face of the Eiger and surrounding mountains.||I was disappointed when we checked in late and found we were reassigned from the room with a flower bedecked balcony I had booked to a suite with a patio but I quickly got over it. The suite had a bedroom, living room with a couch, coffee table and desk, and a bathroom with a tub/shower combination. It was great to have an extra room to spread out all our hiking gear and the patio, with a table, chairs and umbrella overlooking the Eiger, was a great place to hang out after long hikes in the mountains.||The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant stayed open late after that late arrival and even allowed us to take pizzas back to our patio one night after an especially arduous hike.||There certainly are fancier hotels in Grindelwald, but the Alpenhof is a clean, friendly and comfortable option we...
