I’m unable to recommend this hotel for a few reasons, and I’m disappointed in the way in which our stay was handled by management. I’ve given the manager of the hotel a heads up that I will be posting this review. Our stay consisted of the following issues:
Room not as advertised We booked a corner deluxe room which was advertised as having two beds. It did not, and when we asked about this, the manager said this was not on the website and I showed him a screenshot. He admitted they may have to change the website. They were unable to find us another room with two beds so they brought a rollaway bed. Not idea for such an expensive room.
Welcome package forgotten This hotel heavily advertises their ability to have a “welcome package” available in your room when you check in. These are fairly pricey packages of champagne, handwritten notes, fruit, food, flowers, etc.. The person I was traveling with had booked one 3 weeks in advance with a special handwritten note message. It was rather embarrassing for everyone when this wasn’t in the room, and the hotel staff had completely forgotten about the order. They did apologize and tried to send up a replacement (and refunded the cost). The manager of the hotel offered to take care of 50% of our stay as an apology for the room issue and the welcome package. He would later rescind this offer for reasons unknown to us.
ANTS — a lot of them On our second night, after speaking with the hotel manager, I asked once again for another room with two beds. This time they had one that was smaller (but they said we would still be charged the same room rate, which is overpaying…. hmmm). The problem was, when we got to the room it was completely covered in ants. We counted over 50, and they kept coming. I killed everything i could and when I realized there was no way to kill them all, we made the decision to go to the front desk and ask for another room. I have never seen so many ants in one room, ever. I was in the room for 30-40 mins and I thought I was in a BBC Planet Earth documentary.
Manager reneged on offer There was no suitable room available as a replacement, so we spoke to the lady at the front desk and she said she would cancel our second night if we wanted to move hotels. We did. We found another room in another hotel and left, and got our money for the second unused night (we only stayed one night total). When we left, we asked about the 50% refund the manager had offered, and the lady said the manager would have to refund this as she didn’t have the authority. I left my contact details with her so the manager would be able to contact me and make good on his offer.
The manager emailed me 2 days later saying his offer was not able to be followed through on. He is refusing to refund 50% of our stay. He said the second night cancellation was sufficient, and the replacement champagne should have been sufficient. This is completely not accurate and we didn’t get a refund on our stay — we were just allowed to cancel our second night because the room was not habitable due to a serious ant infestation.
As such, I cannot recommend this...
Read moreOur family of six just checked out after a two night stay at Hotel du Nord. There are quite a few things to like about this hotel, and unfortunately a few to dislike. To begin, it is an easy, flat 8-10 min walk from train and bus stations, and centrally located in the lovely town. The lobby and bar are beautiful and modern, as are the grounds and rooms/bathrooms. We were greeted by friendly staff at the front desk throughout our stay, and our bags were stored and then delivered to our rooms while we walked around town prior to our check-in time. The breakfast was delicious and well stocked. The bathrooms very modern and very cool. Speaking of cool....the rooms were not. I mean quite literally not cool. The bed and pillows were comfortable, while the chairs and desk not so much. (Still adequate, but nothing super comfortable.) The real problem we, in all three separate rooms, experienced was how uncomfortably muggy, hot and humid they were. No A/C is usually fine with me (though not with others in my family). In fact -before anyone accuses me of being a spoiled American tourist -please know that I prefer no A/C and don't have it at our house in the States. However, none of these rooms have SCREENS for the windows to let in the cool, evening mountain air!! While the room fans two included) helped a little, they still were not enough. None of us slept well, and consequently have been irritable for the last two days. To top it off, the Gestapo-like breakfast staff guarding the entrance/exit will not allow "guests" ( term used loosely) to take their coffee back to their rooms! I have worked in hotels before, and stayed in many around the world. This was a first for me. In fact, they wouldn't even provide to-go cups unless we paid extra. If I had it to do over, we would not have stayed at Hotel du Nord. With a few minor improvements though, namely window screens, bathroom exhaust fans, and a more normal, less rigid breakfast policy, I would perhaps change my mind. (Also, lids for the ice bucket you have to get at the bar would be nice. Without lids, the small bucket of ice turns to a bucket of water...
