Worst hostel I ever stayed in my travel history. Comfort rooms and shower rooms are dirty and not well maintained - greasy and broken tiles, doors, and toiletries not regularly refilled. Room doesn’t have enough coolness for you to sleep properly.
The hostel has a quiet time of 10pm to 7am but as of writing this (June 30 evening) it seems that the hostel cannot follow its own rules. There is still loud music below at the bar and they let people scream even it is already beyond 10pm. Even yesterday, it is also noisy.
Room occupants are also not mindful of their loud voices and didn’t not have consideration for other room mates. They just talk normally even if they know it is past 10pm already and they know someone is sleeping already in the room. They even do phone calls inside the room and giggle with each other. This is very common with WOMEN who have friends in the room. Very disrespectful and ill-mannered. Such a shame for them that they don’t know how to be sensitive to other people’s needs.
Even if you say that the dorm rate is cheap, people who booked and PAID for it still deserve decent and clean bathrooms and quiet place to sleep as the bare minimum. I am not demanding for a luxury stay and I understand it is a mixed dorm, but respect to fellow travelers and cleanliness is something that is non-negotiable for me and should be given to people regardless of the situation. You are paying for accommodation TO primarily SLEEP. If you are just gonna prioritize partying, might as well turn your business into a full-blown bar instead.
Seems that the company doesn’t even have RESPECT to the Thai culture and location. This is Chiang Mai, and the building is within a neighborhood and NOT within Khao San road. Heck, regardless of where the building is, if your business is about accommodations, you must provide the customers with the service that you offer which is a place to SLEEP. Not to party or do activities. There should be proper time for that.
I told the staff about the rules for quiet time and that’s the only time they stopped the music, but the crowd in the ground floor is still loud.
I went down for the second time and asked for a change of room, and Tanya (staff) willingly accommodated me and let me sleep in another room. But when I am about to sleep, a guy and a girl are sharing the bed and I can hear them. Such a shame. I think it is a common thing here and it is VERY CHEAP for people to be sharing a bed. If they want to do sex or sleep together, why don’t they book a private room instead? Obviously, they cannot seem to afford it. That is why they result to putting themselves in a risky and lowly situation. Very disgusting and really - such a shame for their parents if they know their kids are doing those things.
I ended up NOT BEING ABLE TO SLEEP AT ALL.
If you can’t enforce strict rules to your business, expect it to be ruined and flooded by negative feedback from the customers. Unless of course if the “other” customers are the ones willing to always break the rules and like it. Sorry to say but if that’s the case, maybe you can make your hostel exclusive to loud and disrespectful western customers instead, including the staff. As the only Asian customer during my stay, I can say that the energy and the attitude of the people staying there especially women is so awful. I feel sorry for the Thai people in the neighborhood and staffs that they needed to deal with these entitled and insensitive customers most of the time.
I have booked a not so popular hostel in Bangkok too but the quality, cleanliness and quietness is superb. The staffs are nice and roommates are very quiet. Very far from this overrated hostel.
Chiang Mai is very beautiful but it was ruined because of picking this hostel as my place to stay. Never again. I...
Read moreBest experience at a Hostel so far! The Hostel is so cool and filled w things to do! They have a pool (w a volleyball set) in the middle of their courtyard, surrounded by lounge chairs, picnic benches, and their own Bar! They also have a wicked party room painted floor to ceiling in a graffiti-style that they use every night for group trivia (w a bucket of free beers for a prize), beer pong, and casual drinks w music. Not only is the location unreal - as it’s in walking distance of all the hottest bars - but the staff will also organize transport for pub crawls and other activities. And speaking of the staff, to say they are incredible would be an understatement! They go above and beyond both professionally - by making sure you have everything you need - and personally - by making sure you feel welcomed and included in the fun, during your stay.
Woody is one of the first faces you will see as he is one of the staff members who help check guests in/out and is the absolute sweetest. He makes the process quick & easy and even accommodates a place for your things when you’re in-between check in/out times.
Jude is one of the staff members who helps organize the hostels activities (such as transportation for the pub crawls, etc.) and is very down-to-earth and hilarious. She is so easy to talk to and fun to be around. Almost like a fun older sister, she somehow finds a way to make you laugh even while keeping you and all your crazy friends organized and cared for.
Mome is another staff member who helps organize activities (trivia, pub crawls, etc.) and is so genuine and caring. She makes a point to get to know the guests by asking about their travel plans & experiences and does so in a way that makes it obvious she truly cares. She is also very generous and is happy to share her time, even after her shift is over by going out w the guests and ensuring they see the best of the night life while making them feel safe in a new place.
Fern is another staff member who helps organize activities (trivia, evening outings, etc.) and is truly just a wonderful person. She is personable, kind, funny, and the sunshine in every room. She is so someone who truly cares about people and makes it evident that is a quality that extends past a job for her. She also makes it a mission to ensure you have the best experience by dedicating her time to the guests both on and off shift. When my friends and I weren’t sure where the best bars were to go, she didn’t just tell us (like most people would), she took us! We had told her we booked a party bus to take us to the bar and not only did she save us from being scammed by the driver we had booked w, she personally ordered us another ride and brought us to an even better bar than what we had picked. She is what it means to be a good person and true friend.
We want to thank the staff for an incredible experience and point out to their boss that they all need raises! Love, Landon, Joe, Riley,...
Read moreMy friend and I stayed in Mad Monkey for 5 nights. Good party hostel, they have lot of activities, good place to make friends, it’s also really clean. Also, I liked that they close the hostel around 10pm so we can sleep early even if it’s a party hostel. BUT I’m really disappointed and angry this morning, notice that I did a lot of hostels in the past few years and something like that never happened to me before. The last night we couldn’t sleep at all, because 4 guys of our room woke us up at 3am, drunk, opened the light and talked super loudly for more than an hour. We asked them to shut the light and talk outside the room but it took them a while. A volunteer was also in our dorm and she asked them to shut up but they didn’t listen to her neither. So this morning we asked the reception to get a refund for last night, we clearly paid a night for nothing since we didn’t sleep and it’s more expensive than other places. Also, it is written on the rules « no noise in dorms past midnight » but I guess the manager doesn’t take his own rules seriously. The staff called the manager and he refused to help us without even talking to us. I asked to talk to him but he didn’t wanted to be bothered. He even said we should have told the employee downstairs, but I was too scared to do something since I’m just a girl and the guys are way bigger than me and drunk… Also, the volunteer witnessed everything so I thought I didn’t need to tell them downstairs. After staying there for 5 nights I feel really disrespected, like they have no empathy and care for good clients, it’s just about...
