The only positive thing I can say about this hotel is that the staff are nice. The rooms are done up as cheaply as possible, and years ago, so the impression is that it is falling apart. The lobby is run down to the point that the one table top lamp has a big brown stain on the shade. Everywhere you look it is not necessarily dirty, but broken down and badly maintained to the point that two stars is a made up standard. The bed spread on our (very small double) was old and frayed, but not in a way that suggests original quality, but poorly chosen, and yes, ugly materials. The pillows were lumpy and the bed uncomfortable. The shower porcelain is cracked, the shower impossible to get a steady stream of water that was warm, and the toilet handle is loose, making flushing a challenge. One small (and only) picture on the wall was definitely not art but a garage sale piece by someone who had no idea what they were doing so scraped thick pant across a canvas. The breakfast was a poor imitation of a post WWII English breakfast. We were served burnt coffee, burnt toast, a pool of pinkish beans with an equally pink slice of what was more cheap sandwich ham, not English bacon, the eggs dry and overcooked, that's all. After one unhappy sitting we walked around the corner for a real English breakfast every morning. The 'lift' was moaningly slow and apparently on its last legs, and the 'up' button was a cross between worn off paint and dirty fingers. The closet back in our room seemed to separate us from the next room with a piece of thin plywood, so that when that guest used the closet it was as though he was in our room with us. Our window looked out over unhappy walls. A beautiful outside when you pull up, with flowers and a well tended front is misleading. Even though we were given clean sheets I would never stay...

Strains of the Eagles music playing softly in the background, the lady at the front desk with her big smile friendly demeanour, helpful attitude. She treated us like Royalty. We chatted about the music, what was around the hotel and how great our trip to Scotland had been. And we’re looking forward to exploring the paddington station area. We got to ride the new Elizabeth line on opening day. Very nice!
It was May 2022, pandemic protocols were still in effect In most places.including the hotels. In spite of that they went out of their way to make us comfortable, and succeeded! For Breakfast on weekends we were given a free breakfast coupon for a nice little place down the block. There was also pre-made and individually wrapped continental breakfast on weekdays. The room was on the end overlooking an area where kids were playing every day. It was great to wake to the sounds of kids laffing and playing, and the sounds and smells of food from families cooking and enjoying the warm evenings drifted into our window. I felt like I was home. Back home my Dad passed at age 102. Sad but not unexpected. Flowers arrived at the hotel, the staff were very sympathetic and just so lovely. On checkout day ,even tho it was not weekend, they gave us breakfast passes. When it was time to go to the airport, we asked if they could call us a cab. Instead she got us a better deal with a black car and asked them to treat us like VIP’s, which he did. I cannot say enough good things about our stay there and the hotel itself. When we go back to London I want to go back there. Thank you for such a lovely stay at the...
Read moreDon't get me wrong , this is a 3-star hotel BUT I had a 5-star experience. The staff always answered any question and always had a smile no matter how busy - and their weather predictions were always spot on. My favorite part was breakfast. So many languages and accents - all happy about the upcoming day. breakfast was prompt and warm and flavorful. The room was exactly what I expected and I slept well each night and it was always clean. Sure it's furniture was dated but are you really in London to admire the hotel furniture? The location is fantastic - a beautiful meditation garden across the street,.2-3 minutes from two different tube stops. 4 minutes from Hyde park. Easy walk to Paddington station - train to heathrow. Close to reasonable money exchange, lunch spots, small pubs etc. If you get back from your day before 11, the in-house pub offers cold beverages for that nightcap. My room faced the back and was quite quiet (I could see a room facing front on a lower floor being loud). Walls are thin so if you and yours are loud when you "celebrate", know your neighbors will hear you. If you can get past the worn out leather chairs in the sitting room (which are really comfortable) and the circa 1960s furniture in the rooms (which are very functional).... you'll really enjoy Mitre House - I know I did and hope to again...
