I have been an IHG Priority Club member since 1999. While I am not an extensive traveler, my husband and I have often looked for IHG hotels when we travel. This will no longer be the case.
This past year my oncologist moved to Emory Winship Cancer Center in Atlanta, GA. I decided to follow him and had an appointment January 14th and January 15th, 2025. I flew to Atlanta on the 13th and returned to the Kansas City, MO area on the 16th.
I booked a room in the Crowne Plaza Midtown because I knew that it was an IHG hotel, and it was very close walking distance to Emory Winship Cancer Center. My reservation was from January 13th â January 16th, 2025. This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed. I am still reeling over my absolutely horrible experience.
First, the check-in process was very long. While I was standing in line a woman came up and wanted to cut-in line because she was given the âwrongâ key to her room. The desk clerk said you have to go back into line, and she appealed to everyone in line to request that she cut in. We all said fine. She even commented about the long wait time for check-in, and that she was exhausted. I didnât think much of it at the time, but by the time my stay was over, I knew what she meant.
Next, my check-in was relatively easy, I went to my room, and was surprised at how shabby it was. There were double doors to the closet and one of the doors wouldnât close completely. I immediately looked for the room safe. There was none, and the bottom 2 drawers on the 6-drawer dresser wouldnât open. I donât know if they were fake drawers, or if they were screwed shut. The sliding glass door was filthy, but then I realized that it was no longer a sliding glass door. Even though there was a balcony, the sliding glass door had been screwed shut with an inserted angle iron piece. I could daylight through the doorâs edge, and I could feel a draft, and when I pushed the door moved, but the balcony was inaccessible. No problem, it is winter, but how shabby.
I returned to the desk with all my possessions and requested a room with a safe so that I could store my jewelry and passport. I waited through the long line to desk clerk even though there was another desk clerk there; however, she only helped the Staybridge guests. At the time, there were no Staybridge guests. When I spoke to the Crowne Plaza desk clerk, she informed me that there were no rooms with safes. I was dumbfounded. How can that be? She finally said that they had safes in the back. I agreed to take one, and it was utter confusion finding the proper size safe key in the plastic bucket of all of the safe keys.
I have initially asked for a larger safe, but she couldnât get it open, so I agreed to have a smaller safe: one that she could figure out which key fit it. I must say that I was concerned about leaving my passport and fine jewelry done there, but I really didnât want to lug it around Atlanta either.
I thought it peculiar that when I returned to my room, I only had one bath towel, and two hand towels and wash clothes, but I was alone, and I thought that housekeeping the next morning would remedy the problem. Boy, was I wrong about that.
I went down to the lobby for dinner, but was informed by the bartender/waitress that food had not been delivered, and I only had a choice of a salad and chicken tenders. Really? I walked 3 blocks to a supermarket only to be concerned about all the vagrants sleeping on the sidewalks. I returned to the hotel and had a salad and chicken tenders.
The following morning, I tried to make a cup of coffee in the Keurig coffee maker, but it wouldnât brew the coffee. I left for my appointment for the Winship Cancer Center, but before I left I bought a $5 cup of coffee in the lobby, and went to the desk to say that the coffee maker didnât work, and maybe housekeeping could replace it.
After my appointments, I returned to my room, but housekeeping had not been there yet. I looked at the room more closely, and noticed that the lampshade on the desk was torn, there was peeling paint on the ceiling and the door to the bathroom, and the toilet seat had no covers over the screws, there was no second roll of toilet paper. I realized that was staying in a $265 a night dump. If you are interested, I did take pictures of the room which I will be posting on various websites reviewing this hotel.
Tuesday afternoon, my keycard deactivated and my internet no longer worked. I was able to get my key card to work, but I never was able to restore the internet. I decided to visit the 25th floor (Skyview), and I was rudely kicked out by some man who said they were preparing for an event. In addition, the ladiesâ room in the lobby was closed the entire time I was there. I was speaking to a woman who was there for a âhome decorationâ event somewhere close by, and she was complaining about the fact that the ladiesâ room was out of order. I decided to walk to a restaurant for dinner that night, and had to step over human bowel movements on the Crowne Center sidewalk.
At 9pm that night I went down to the desk and complained that I had no housekeeping, and that I had no towels. Of course, I had to stand in the long line to the Crowne Plaza side, while the Staybridge woman just stooged around.
To make a really long, horrible story a bit shorter, I never had housekeeping my entire stay. I actually put my trash outside the door in the hallway as a hint. Someone picked up the garbage, but no one ever cleaned my room. I had to go the desk the following night to get more towels. I even asked to speak to the manager, and the desk clerk told me that the manager wasnât there. I asked to speak to whomever was in charge, he didnât know who was in charge. I actually laughed because it reminded me of the movie Apocalypse Now when Martin Sheen stops at the last outpost, and asks the soldier, âWhoâs in charge, soldier?â and the soldier responds, âAinât you?â
I tried to find the business center to print my boarding pass, and when I couldnât find it, I once again stood in the really long line at the desk while the Staybridge woman stooged around, and asked where the business center was, and I was told they didnât have one. Okay.
I am completely furious over this, and I want you to know that I will never stay in another IHG hotel again. I thought that the Crowne Plaza was one of the more upscale IHG hotels, but I was definitely wrong about that. I spent almost $1000 in that hotel in 4 days, you should be ashamed...
