Perhaps one would assume an in-town church in Midtown might be filled with somewhat aloof congregants, but to see for ourselves, we visited & viewed this beautiful, awe-inspiring sanctuary & joined in singing with fairly exuberant voices around us singing hymns. One Pastor led us in worship & prayers, another had a message which resonated with us, a powerful organist and choir accompanied and we felt welcomed for communion. There was even a message by a pastor for children who could then enjoy their own version of church during the message portion. No one stared at us & few ignored us, many people smiled and shook hands - the big surprise tho was how friendly most were ! - we were welcomed by individuals - not overwhelmed, but apparently,sincerely interested people After the service, we followed some people to a really nice, really open area for coffee and stayed a while talking with people who spoke with us. They have served over 2 million meals to the homeless. They have a prayer wall up for lent to pray for those in need. They have programs for refugees.
They have fun community events as well. There are neighborhood street parties. Each Christmas season, they have a live nativity.
Within their own congregation, they have Bible studies, seasonal book studies and more. They offer a more contemporary jazz service and a more traditional choir service every Sunday.
