Our recent weeklong stay at the La Quinta Inn in Brandon (July 2025) was a mixed experience, which is why I’m giving it three stars—split evenly between what went right and what went wrong.
Let’s start with the cons:
Upon arrival, we were surprised to see hotel guests standing around in the parking lot, with the front entrance completely barricaded due to construction. This was not disclosed anywhere during the reservation process, which was frustrating. The fire alarm had been going off before we arrived, adding to the chaos, and all check-ins had to be handled through a makeshift front desk via an unlocked side entrance.
This brings up another serious concern—safety. That side door was left unlocked 24/7, meaning anyone could walk in, and guests (many of them smoking) congregated LESS THAN SIX FEET from the entrance. The sign said smokers needed to be 25 feet away, but it was clearly ignored, and we had to walk through clouds of smoke each time we entered.
Check-in itself was slow and hectic, though I will commend Sally at the front desk—she was the only staff member on duty and handled complaints (missing towels, malfunctioning key cards, etc.) with grace and professionalism. Our key cards didn’t work properly either—we had to have them reprogrammed three times.
Inside, the lobby was a construction zone, with tiles torn up and the small snack store completely blocked off by plastic sheeting. The atmosphere didn’t feel clean or welcoming, and the hotel grounds, including the parking lot, were littered with trash and cigarette butts. Inside the hotel, we experienced noise from kids running in the hallways and a barking dog that kept us up several nights. The beds were uncomfortable, and although I requested extra pillows, it didn’t help much. Water pressure was decent in the shower but very weak in the bathroom sink.
In all seriousness, I would have checked out after day two but I had paid in full through a third-party and there was no way I was going to be able to get a refund.
Now, the positives:
Every staff member we encountered—from front desk to housekeeping—was friendly and genuinely tried to make our stay more comfortable. The breakfast was also better than expected, offering hot eggs, coffee, and other basic items to start the day.
The location is also a plus: it’s close to shopping, restaurants, and a mall. Since my son is moving nearby, it was convenient for us to explore the area during our stay.
Overall: While the staff was lovely and the breakfast appreciated, the unsafe entrance, gaggle of resident smokers, lack of communication about the construction, and general lack of upkeep made for a disappointing stay. I wouldn’t return or recommend this location—especially not without assurance that renovations are complete and basic security concerns have...

Read moreThe management at this hotel is absolutely horrific. The employees were great but the General Manger Richard Wolf was the most rude human being I've ever seen in a management position. I don't even know where to begin. The rent to own program my fiancée uses for her home put her in the hotel while they repair the flooring in the house. The reservation was set from 2/1/24-2/5/2024. As of 2/5/24 we were informed by the program that the floor wasn't complete. We asked if they were going to extend the hotel stay and were awaiting an answer. My fiancée went with my 13 year old daughter to the front desk to ask 2 questions. She asked if she could buy some laundry detergent and the other was to ask if she could extend the stay, even if having to pay it out of pocket. Before she could even finish her first question, this poor excuse of a man started waiving his hands in her face telling her she needed to vacate the premises. Repeatedly telling her "chop chop" that is a literal quote. This guy told her he was going to call the cops on her. This all transpired from 11 am check out to 2 pm when she called me to leave work and pick her up because this man was being extremely rude almost bringing her to tears. Again in front of our child. Afterward he followed my 13 year old daughter to the bathroom. Asked my 9 year old son what he was doing and where he was going repeatedly, while he accompanied his sister to the bathroom (they both had to go and we were right outside the lobby packing the car up) I've called corporate and am waiting for a solution, but that isn't even everything that happened. Do not recommend this place. I feel bad for the good employees who work there, especially the ones he snapped his fingers at as they tried to comfort my fiancée because they knew he took it too far. Some admitted to us they were scared of him, as he acts like this all the time. Nobody like that should be in management. I would also like to add that my fiancée is afro-latina which I wouldn't say it was racism until I showed up from work, I'm white (so is Richard, the manager) and he was not nearly as disrespectful to me as he was her. But, during our interaction, he did rudely speak to his Hispanic employee demanding some sort of work to be completed, but with absolutely no class in his tone. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this man is a racist. The amount of anger I have that he treated my family in this way is unreal. I will escalate this situation as far as I possibly can. I am disgusted by this poor excuse of a human being and I truly hope this company does not...
