First, we check into our first room. All the drawers are pulled out, the bed is made but the sheets aren't tucked in, there are not supplies in the bathroom except an unwrapped bar of soap. The person at the front desk told us that they have been renovating. Well, the person who did their tile did not do a very good job. There were big cracks between the tile and the wall. Then the front desk moved us to another room. It was better but the curtains were behind this huge desk and the air conditioner so we had to squeeze behind it and pull them shut because it was evening. One side of the room was freezing and the other side warm. We called the front desk and they sent and engineer up. He explained that the freezing side was not turned on to heat so it just kept sending out cold air. Finally, when that was fixed the room felt nice. Our daughter was staying with us in a fold out couch. I asked the maid to please make the bed. She didn't put a mattress pad on the bed - she just put two sheets on the bed. My daughter didn't even get a pillow or blanket. Of course, we shared. The fold out bed had springs galore in the mattress - it was not comfortable. The toilet in the second room kept gurgling & we had to flush it 3 times each time we used it. We were on the 7th floor. The pool area didn't look pretty at all and one of the fire pits didn't work. A staff member tried to light it and he found the knob broken. The engineering department seemed to know about it. We were a big party - we went to Ohio for a wedding and there were about 15 of us staying at this hotel. So it wasn't uncommon for us to meet at breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room. At the first breakfast - we had 12 at the table. I explained to the server that we wanted to pay for our daughter who was sitting in the middle of the table and the 2 hosts of the party. I was explaining who they were and the server said, "Let me do it my way." I guess she was upset because we didn't want to participate in the buffet. Then the last morning for breakfast - first the hostess spilled ice cold water on my foot - she apologized but then the server spilled hot coffee on my pant leg and he didn't apologize. I told him and he got a smirk on his face. Thank goodness I was wearing black pants. Now with all that said - everyone else at the hotel was very - very nice. And the food was good. It was a nice four day stay but the Renaissance in Phoenix is absolutely beautiful -...
Read moreIt was apparent that every area of the hotel was understaffed with the exception of the valet. There was only one person checking in guests as a "first day" trainee watched her. I am not impatient but at a Renaissance I do not expect to wait for three people to get checked in before me.
Did not inspect our room carefully other than to note that the toilet had not been cleaned well and evidence of the prior guest was still there. Disturbing. I cleaned it myself and did not tell my wife nor complain to the front desk.
Went to the bar. Granted it was busy and with only two bartenders on duty they could not keep up. In spite of sitting at the bar it took more than five minutes just to get their attention. We did order a pizza along with our drinks and it was very tasty and served quickly.
At 6:00 a.m. the alarm went off. We had not set it. Shouldn't housekeeping check that the alarm is set to "off" so this kind of thing doesn't happen? Why would I think to check that? I guess I will in the future.
Breakfast in Latitude 41 was just the same. 30% of the tables in the restaurant had not been bussed even though no one was sitting at them. Coffee and tea took five or more minutes to bring to the table. Shouldn't those be predictable requests and ready almost immediately? There was no one to pay once we were done eating. Finally flagged someone at the bar who was happy to help but had to disappear for five minutes to bring me change for a $20 bill.
We left the hotel to wander the town and I stopped by the desk to ask that the room be cleaned because housekeeping had knocked at 9:30 and we sent them away. Was assured they would have come back to the room regardless of my request. We returned at 5:30 to find the room had not been cleaned. Called the front desk and they sent someone right away but we had to leave while they did their job.
The hotel itself was obviously updated sometime in the recent past. On first observation the king room we were in seemed nice. The bed was excellent. Then you live in it for 48 hours and you discover some of the shortcomings. Specifically the bathroom. It had the lowest toilet I have ever seen. If I still had young children this might be exciting to them. I just cannot imagine how an older person, or someone with bad knees, could get up from that position. The door to the bathroom is a gigantic glass sliding barn door. Looks really cool but provides no audio privacy for the person in...
Read moreWe stayed two nights but spent very little time in our standard king room. The following are what left an impression on me. The short version: The room was very clean, the towels were very soft, much nicer quality than standard towels of equivalent hotels. The bed was comfortable, firm not extra firm as is standard for most hotel beds. The walls were only moderately sound proof but there were signs in the hallways asking guest to be respectful of their neighbors and had a phone# to call if you were bothered by noise from other guests.
More details: Its an older but renovated room and the bathroom was weird. As soon as you walk in the door the bathroom is the first thing you see. It has a sliding door which it shares with the closet so that only one of them is covered at a time. The toilet was very industrial looking as the plumbing was visible.
There were several positive factors of this weird little room that made it quite practical. I liked that the bathtub has been replaced by only a shower but it has the same footprint as the previous tub.
There was an additional large wall mounted round mirror with a ring light and an insert of a magnifying mirror. A small table below it was just the right size to set my make-up and hair products on. In my opinion the oddness of the bathroom is also offset by the very soft, absorbent towels and Aveda bath products.
I enjoyed the selection of teas that were provided. The disposable beverage cups were individually wrapped.
Our neighbors were excessively loud at one point in the afternoon but we were only in the room for a few min. so we didn't call about the noise. I really appreciate that the hotel is sensitive to this issue and offered a proactive approach to dealing with it.
I did not like that there wasn't a self park option. We made several trips in and out which required the use of our car and having to wait for it was not ideal. The valets were very quick and professional but just too busy for the available space.
Overall, if the pool is open next time I'm in town I would stay here if my first choice is...
