I have never before given a review of any business online. . But I am going out of my way to earmark this Best Western in Corvallis. The person who ran the front desk that night I checked in was wonderful, so this does not apply to here. But in general I will tell all my friends who do business in Corvallis or who stay over night for OSU events or ballgames to find another hotel. Here's why.
I booked three rooms for two nights this past June. One for my wife and I, one for our kids, and one for my elderly in-laws. My in-laws had a health episode, resulting in the need for us to cancel their room entirely and to shorten our stay to one night while we tended to them. When we went to cancel, we were inside the window to cancel for the second night of the in-laws room. And they made an exception to cancel their first night too. But they refused to let us cancel the first night of our reservation. Thus we paid for two room on a night we did not use the rooms.
I understand the concept of a business suffering when their are last minute cancellations because the reservation took away the opportunity for the business to sell the room to others. If that were the case, I'd get it. But it wasn't. We were told that for both night we had planned on staying, the hotel did not come close to being sold out. There were ample rooms unreserved. This is why it is galling that after hearing our situation, they still charged us for two night when we only stayed one. They didn't lose a sale on account of us not being able to make it their the first night. They had LOTS of room they still could have sold. Put antoher way, they admitted they did not lose any sales because of our reservation "cancellation" (half the hotel was empty) but no matter: they still kept the money for two nights from us even though we only stayed one. Worse, the person who informed me of this "policy" went out of her way to let me know that I should consider myself lucky she even let me cancel the first nights of the room we never occupied (the room for the in-laws who were unable to make the trip) because that was outside the cancellation window. When I protested having to pay for two room the first night when we couldn't get to Corvallis and they still had other rooms to sell, I was told " Because you are complaining about these charges, now I'm begging to second guess my decision to even let you cancel the first night of your in-laws room because after all that's outside the cancellation window."
They know I'm unhappy about this. They never offered to rectify it. I'm about to post this story on every travel site I can think of; I'm also telling every professional I know down there who has guests stay in town to send them anywhere but this hotel. They took advantage of a family health incident to make money on two rooms that nobody slept it because "that's their policy." I'm sure there are other hotel owners in Corvallis who do not operate this way.
This experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I even have gone out of my way to steer clear of Best Westerns even though I know they are locally owned. So this particular hotel pocketed an extra $500 from me for nothing as two rooms remained vacant along with a number of others. I'm hoping that little "policy" profit will cost them in...
Read moreLet me keep it to the point: Avoid. I called 6 weeks in advance to reserve two adjoining rooms for me, spouse, and two teens. Hotel said sure, they have them, we'll make a note on the reservation. We arrived around 5 to check in, clerk said OK two rooms right? I said yes, adjoining. She said, oh no, we don't have that available. Nope. I was like ?? That was it, no sorry, no offer to help us figure out adjoining rooms at another hotel, no offer to help us move the next morning for our second night. I mentioned that I called about this, she looked at her screen and said in a very rude way, "Maybe you called CORPORATE." ???? A) I called the hotel (as my phone records showed), and B) So what if someone did call corporate, is this hotel not part of the BEST WESTERN CORPORATION? I said, what do you think we should do? She said, that's up to you, in one of the truly least helpful tones of anyone I have ever encountered in a customer service role (and I have been to the DMV in the past year!) - and LOOKED AWAY. I do not think this person belongs on a front desk. But anyway, spouse and I conferred, then he asked her if there was a possibility of moving in the morning for the second night to get adjoining rooms. She said probably not but she couldn't say (WHY NOT) and it was on us to check back at 11 AM. I... what? Shall we stop what activity we are doing as tourists to spend tax dollars in your town to beg for the reservation type we reserved? OK we'll take these rooms - which are not even on the same floor - and as I'm filling out the forms she says, you know you can tape them in. I said what? She said, just like the teachers do when they stay here with school groups, I'll give you some tape and you can tape your kids' door shut so you know if they leave. !!!!! I explained in what I thought was a fairly patient way that I was not concerned about my kids leaving their room but rather wanted to be close to them in case they had any problems and because this is a family vacation. She glared at me. Sorry, I like my family! I completed the forms, she pushed the cardkeys at me, I said thank you, AND SHE LOOKED AWAY AGAIN without a word of thanks, sorry, you're welcome, enjoy your stay... nothing. Girl there are other jobs!|What else. Walls and floors are paper thin, we heard every step from the people above us (not the kids, they were so far away I think she put them at the opposite end of the hotel on purpose). The elevator floor was smeared with mud when we arrived and was not cleaned when we checked out two days later. The pool is closed. The breakfast is packed up by 8:55. The utensils are quite flimsy, you will not be able to cut your waffle (or anything). The coffee is as weak as tea. The sheets are the kind that don't fit the bed so they ride up and untucked the second you sit down. There was a pallet of detergent sitting in the lobby for about 6 hours on a weekday. OK at least they have detergent? Fitness room and breakfast room are both tiny.|The location is ok, walking distance from grocery stores and shopping centers. Not walking distance to downtown.|I am 100% sure you can do better in Corvallis and I strongly encourage...
Read moreWe have stayed this hotel many times while visiting our daughter at college. Our best experiences have been when we’ve been on a top floor. This is due to literally zero insulation between floors. You can hear every single creak and step, running water, Bathroom trips, TV, voices, clearly enough to make out their conversations. We secured a room earlier in the day and it was a full hotel So were given a room on the first floor, which is always our worst experience And this time did not improve that record. The front desk staff were very loud after 11 PM and when your room is only a few steps down the corridor it’s really hard to sleep when People are talking loudly as if it’s the middle of the day. The person above us was very loud and kept us up from about 4 AM on. Again, literally no insulation between floors. The beds were comfortable as usual, and the room was clean. The next morning, as we are working from our room, one of the house cleaners who was working on our floor Was coughing loudly For over an hour and a half and also sniffing and clearing her throat constantly. I can’t imagine why Hotel staff would allow anyone to work Who is clearly sick and going from room to room spreading germs and not even wearing a mask. After listening to this for over an hour, I went to the front desk And complained and asked them to please have her wear a mask or go to the doctor. I was told that the worker was having an issue with the bleach and it was irritating her throat. Regardless, your housekeeper was coughing her head off for well over an hour And was spreading germs in every room she was cleaning. That does not make me feel good about staying there in the future no matter what floor I’m on. There are other options and from our experience, the Airbnb options are far better Than the hotel options in town. We will stick with this plan for the future and...
