Read moreArrived to the restaurant actually being closed due to a ventilation issue (?) The host let us know and told us they couldn't serve any food - no problem, we just came for Cherry Batch! He directed us to the bar across the hallway (formerly Red Star, now The Barrel Room?) where it was very busy with only one bartender working the bar. Bartender skipped around taking orders and a waitress bringing glasses of the special beer from the tap in the restaurant asked us if that's what we were getting, we said yes and she came back with a few glasses of beer for us and set them behind the bar, told us to let the bartender know and he'd sell them to us. Instead of that, the bartender started distributing the beers to people that had come in after us but managed to place their order ahead of us due to the chaos. I understood the first or second time it happened, but by the third time we just packed up and left. This was a frustrating but not unexpected experience at a Fitger's establishment that has continued to drop the ball and lower the bar on service. It's trashing their reputation with locals, but as they push further and further away from being a local institution and more of a tourist destination for out-of-towners, I doubt a review like this matters much to management. As a side note: as much as I'd have liked to vote with my wallet and go anywhere but another Fitger's property - the pull of the delicious cherry batch is a strong one. We went to Burrito Union and, actually, I'm glad we did. We got our beers with absolutely zero drama, got excellent service from a friendly waitress sympathetic to our Cherry Batch misadventure and just had a lovely time in general. Maybe proximity to the lake is inversely related to quality of the establishment. Dunno, but the 2017 Cherry Batch is incredible. Just do your best to get it somewhere that isn't in the...
Read moreIt is a historic building with good water views and extremely poor ventilation and extremely bad air flow. This is a dog friendly hotel so you can imagine the various of pet urine and old musty odors. If you ask the front desk for a fan they will give you one. But I feel like you shouldn’t need to ask, it needs to be a staple in the room.
The staff was always very kind and accommodating. If you do travel with a pup you can ask for a dog bed at the front desk. I also noticed they had different dogs behind the counter so they might keep an eye on your pet if you needed. Everywhere we went was dog friendly along the strip.
The daily paper at the front door is definitely a nice touch. Room service line never answered for me so I just walked down to the restaurant for breakfast. The view is gorgeous. Side note. Take an older relative on a scooter adventure. They sit right outside and just download the app and go. It’s so much fun. Trust me they will love it and you will have lots of laughs together.
The food at the brewers bar was delicious but because it’s really one of two places that is either good to eat or even open the service takes forever. But drinks can help the long dark wait.
The reason this hotel received 4 stars is solely because of location and being dog friendly. We won’t be staying here again mostly because of bad smells, air and ventilation quality. With that said it was our first time in Duluth and I’m glad we had the experience of...
