To begin, the 3 and a half surprise service fee was extremely unnecessary and was apparently a price increase under the guise of an extra expense we created. Was highly unexpected and was very disheartening to the overall enjoyment of your restaurant experience. Our server was amazing and the food was very good but slightly overpriced. Love the environment ,however, a certain Draco Malfoy edge boy almost ruined our entire experience. When we entered the establishment, we were “greeted” by a taller blonde host who kind of reminded us of Draco Malfoy. He quietly asked us if we wanted to sit in the upstairs or downstairs of the restaurant. He was very quiet to hear so we politely asked him if he could repeat what he said. He began to give us attitude and stayed quiet like before. We aren’t old people with hearing loss so we were confused why he was so quiet. He then rudely brought us to our table whilst saying nothing. There was another host who was relatively polite but left us in the dark and allowed the blonde host to treat us with crassness and disrespect. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt as he could have been having a bad day but his attitude as a host almost made us not want to return. My friend said it was the worst host experience he had ever has and it almost made him want to walk out. Overall, the experience was very good but the slytherin guy...

Our family had not been to dinner the Pickwick in years. We chose returning to this establishment for the 5* ambiance, quality of service and preparation/presentation of the dinner. Our immediate experience was definitely not the upscale restaurant we remembered. Our family of 9, one in a wheelchair, was seated in the bar at a high top table, although we were willing to wait for a table to open up in one of the other diningrooms. Our seating area was extremely noisy. Rock and roll music blasted above us thru the speakers. We had planned for a more intimate dinner together with the ability to converse not just with our family but with our guests from Sweden. Our food was just ‘ok’. No one checked to see if we needed anything nor asked how our food was. Because of where our group was seated, we chose not to order what we had planned on and what the Pickwick has been noted for; steak and lobster. Instead, because it was easier, it was cheeseburgers…meh. Our server was quite busy. We felt bad asking for refills on our water while waiting for our burgers. We asked others whom were serving meals to other bar tables and they replied that they would tell our server. As soon as we were seated in the bar area, we noted that tables were opening up in the other diningrooms. Indeed, times have certainly changed and the quality of service and presentation as we knew...

I ate here years ago--I remember the different rooms and the lake view. It was a nice experience back then so I thought I would try it again with my family (I also remember they had a drinking glass for beer that was shaped like a boot, but that's a different story). We ordered some simple food, chicken strips for the kids, a Reuben, and their signature Pepper Burger (which is deep fried and juicy). We also ordered the onion rings. First up, the service was great--the waiter was spot on about getting us whatever we wanted, so A+ effort there. Our main dishes were also great, of course it's hard to screw up chicken strips. The Reuben was more ground up than others so it was easier to eat which was nice. The Pepper Burger was like a juicy Lucy burger and served about medium (waiter never asked how I wanted it, but it was exactly how I wanted it). It was spicy, but not overly spicy, but probably spicy for the average Scandinavian (which I am not). The only two downsides: the onion rings were served thick and the batter coating was not flavorful at all. The other downside was the ranch dressing with the rings and strips--again, not very flavorful, almost like mild mayo. The price was about $63, but you can...

One of the very first times I went to the Pickwick, I made friends with Reba who is now a friend and my favorite server whenever I go. I’m a local foodie, and I can honestly say that the Pickwick is one of the only consistently good restaurants in town in regards to service and the quality of food for the price. I usually get the filet mignon which is excellent (my husband loves the jambalaya), but I didn’t this trip. My friend ordered the artichoke dip appetizer which was really great because it had a Italian sausage in it for a spicy kick. Excellent! I tried a Black Orchid ice cream drink that was a little fruity and chocolatey- perfect! My friend ordered the soup special which happened to be clam chowder. She told Reba to tell whoever made it that it was as good as the chowder she’d had in Boston… high praise! My tenderloin tidbit dinner was tasty… not too over seasoned, the grilled mushrooms were soft but not mushy, and I highly recommend the fries! I am a French fry connoisseur, and these are worth the calories! Yes the lighting is dark, and the decor is a bit odd, but all in all, I highly recommend the Pickwick for a nice dinner out… and don’t forget to ask for Reba!

Pickwick is an iconic place with a story. Built in 1914, it has served its guests for over 105 years. The electrical conduits tell if a time before electricity was used as the main source of lighting while the giant fireplaces confirm that heat came mostly by burning the renewable resource of wood. The tables are all of the older wood variety with matching chairs. When people think of Pickwick, they think "high priced" when in fact their prices are not much different from the other area restaurants. Their lunch menu consists of hamburgers, salads, lake trout (which I had), and a nice variety of other northern Minnesota delicacies. Their dinner menu is out of this world with some of the best steak choices in Minnesota. We chose this restaurant to celebrate my mom's 90th birthday. The private room were had was perfectly decorated for the fall season and the tables set for a fine dining experience. Our private waitress was ready to do tasks she wasn't even familiar with such as cutting a birthday cake with fondant icing. It's not as easy as it sounds! But it was well worth the wait. The staff were excellent! Very professional and attuned to their guests needs.

20+ years ago I visited the place for the first time. I was impressed then, and had another (my 3rd) good experience. I don’t get to this area often enough to try it more, but when I’m around, it’s in my list. This place opened in 1888 (135 years ago as of 2023 for those not wanting to do the math), and it’s been in its current location since 1914 (109 years ago as of 2023 for those not wanting to do the math). That’s an incredible amount of time in the same location. If you’re willing to wait, or get lucky, there are some tables right on the back end that are on the water, and a lot of glass to look through. It’s a very beautiful building and beautiful view to go with it. Any spot in here will be a nice one, but the glass view of the Great Lake is frosting on the cake. Service has always been good and so has the cleanliness been. It may be an old building, but they have people who know how to cook and who know how to treat the guests. This place will always be on my list of places to return to. Good meal and good service. Give it a try if you’re in the area.
