This is where the smart money stays! If you’re used to the finer things in life, you know how hard it is to stay in hotels, leaving your marble countertops, upscale bathrooms, elegant furniture, modern appliances, and conveniences behind and being certain you’ll be disappointed by anywhere you stay.
If you’re like me you compensate by staying in boutique 4.5 star and up; my standards are Klimpton / Grand Bohemian / Ritz Carlton.
So why am I at the Gazebo Inn if I usually stay at places that cost 10x as much?
Location - it is walkable to everything you may need for your stay, including a Walmart if you forgot anything (I hate driving). It’s walkable to the main gay nightlife as well, Pulse Ultra club! It’s on the beach!
Price - this place wasn’t just competitively priced; it was actually the most inexpensive accommodation I’ve ever had. I ought to have expected the worse place ever, filthy, overrun with criminal types doing drugs, and infested with vermin. I would normally have skipped over it but the reviews and responses made me think - this place has a lot of love in it. So I gave them a chance.
Amenities - pool ✅ hot tub ✅ fridge ✅ microwave ✅ beachfront ✅. True, there is no ball room, gym, spa, or fine dining (at least not in off season). But I can count on one hand the times I’ve used these amenities; what I want is: easy, walkable access to the best local attractions, beach, and nightlife, not a bunch of reasons to never leave the hotel. This place has everything you will want, and a laundry room.
Concierge services - I normally don’t use these anyway but needed some Amazon deliveries for things I forgot to bring. They called me the instant it was delivered. Package handling is really most of the value of concierge services anyway, and they did it better than even the 4.5 stars! With both Klimpton and Grand Bohemian I was not even notified when my food was delivered!
The guy at the front desk was amiable and efficient, and elements of the interaction indicated to me this is a family-run inn, though I could be wrong I guess. When I opened the door to my room I expected the disappointment you usually experience in hotels priced below 4 or 5 star… and I did have one! The place kinda looked dirty but - WAIT FOR IT - some smudges on the balcony door and the wall were the ONLY issue though; I spent 5 minutes cleaning them up with a washcloth and then looked again, comparing it to my favorite high-end suites at Klimptons and Grand Bohemians and such…
…. AND it was COMPARABLE! Immaculate. Just older. There is no wet bar for overpriced items you expense as entertainment as in those other places, but then if you’re on business you are usually locked in to multinationals like Hilton. There is no cocktail gala, no attached fine dining (does that exist in Myrtle?) and no spa. And I never used those amenities anyway except en passant (grabbing cocktails on my way through the lobby).
The furniture was older but still modern and high end, the beds were 4 star comfort, there were no noxious odors and no critters of any kind. The place was clean but for the smudges. I told my partner this was as good as the Klimpton (4.5 star boutique hotel chain) but better because of the hot tub, pool, and beach access.
And about those smudges I wiped off the walls and door to make the place immaculate: I’m here in off season - I’m sure I just beat their spring cleaning by a week or so (you can’t deep clean everything every day after all). Plus I was a very early check in so maybe they just squeezed me in.
This place is a steal of a deal. I’m dead serious - everything I see is above 3 star, just old. The vanity mirror is a kind I only found at Klimptons and Ritz Carlton’s and I squealed when I saw it.
If I wanted to make this place fully 4 star like a Klimpton then I’d just do a lobby remodel, interior redecoration, new facade, new railings, new bedspreads, add a rooftop bar, add braziers and fiber optics at the pool, and upgrade the showers. Then sell it to...
Read moreWe stayed July22-29th this year at the Gazebo. We have been customers here for around 10 years. We didn’t get a chance to come in 2022 due to having a new baby. The last visit we had before this summer was when Rob and Julie still owned it. The expectation of the “same Gazebo Inn” was thrown out the window as soon as we arrived. They chose to do parking lot construction/painting during the peak season, this caused a backlog of arriving guests on the main level parking lot. We waited for a while to check in due to so much congestion in the upper lot. The few spots that were available to park in were being used by cars and other vehicles that could easily fit under the parking garage. We witnessed the groundskeeper remove a cone for the spot blocked for construction so another employee could park there as guests waited and were redirected to park across the street! The desk clerk with long braids is beyond the rudest women I have ever met. She is snarky, and just plain out mean! She definitely doesn’t like her job, or people, or perhaps both. This continued throughout our stay. Housekeeping does not clean rooms, and you have to fight to get towels or trash bags. There was one housekeeper who was great and I wish I knew her name, she wore a black headband. The rooms themselves were updated from the old design including flatscreens and new paint. You only get 2 flat pillows per bed. There were a lot of broken/ damaged items in our room. There are no dishes/cookware/silverware in an efficiency, although we asked prior to check in and were assured that there was. We ended up buying some at Walmart. The pool is supposed to close at 10pm but a lot of nights there were people being very loud until almost midnight! Sometimes it was even the groundskeepers grandchildren. Our first two nights there were extremely loud and intrusive fireworks being set off right in-front of the hotel on the beach. The AC has a hard time keeping the room cool, they are very old units. On several occasions the housekeepers and other staff would come down after their shifts and swim in the pool. The pool shed where chemicals are kept was left open several times and the water hose stretched out poses a tripping hazard. The elevator was broken 2/7 days we were there so we had to carry our beach items/bags and walk 5 floors. This hotel which my family truly enjoyed staying at, has went horribly in the wrong direction. A makeover is more than just paint and a TV. It’s rules and expectations, standards of what the hotel had been successfully utilizing for decades. I even spoke to the General Manager Sean who didn’t honestly seem concerned with all the above. There was even a family checking in as w were packing our car who wanted a refund due to the extremely rude staff and being given the wrong room. They would not refund their room charge. Another guest told us that they waited 3hours after check in time of 3pm before their room was ready. If we could turn back time to the old owners I would highly recommend the Gazebo Inn, but new owners, management, and staff have made The Gazebo Inn an entirely different hotel experience and definitely in a negative fashion. We will not be staying at this hotel anymore after 10 years. Goodbye Gazebo. Thank you for 10 years of memories...
Read moreI don't do bugs. Roaches are not acceptable to me. Maintenance busting into my room unannounced was not a good situation either. I was booked for a 5 night stay at the end of July. I wanted to make sure I got all my money back before writing a review because they acted like they were doing me a favor by not charging for the nights I didn't stay. My flight was delayed so I didn't get there until 2 or 3am. The bed had a huge blood stain on it and both beds were very uncomfortable. Felt like springs in my back. The stove and fridge were rusted. There were no dishes or silverware besides a few cups. The view is amazing so I comprised because this was the first time I've ever stayed on a beach. I saved money for years to be able to see a view like that. The next day I was sitting on the bed and the person with me was in the bathroom while I heard a loud noise and a man busted in the room. When he saw me he said he was told nobody was in here and he was there to fix an issue with the door. I said there was no issue with the door but I let him use a machine and do whatever he was doing with the door. I ended up with new key cards and he left with a good story to tell about why you shouldn't bust into someone's room unannounced. I had a beautiful balcony view and the best pool/beach day of my life. Stayed on the beach until it was dark outside. After barely getting sleep because of the uncomfortable bed, I woke up the next morning to a roach. As soon as I turned the bathroom light on there was a cockroach that I had to kill. I was looking past a lot of things to keep this beautiful location but I don't do bugs. I read the reviews before I booked my room so I made sure I found another place to go before attempting to get my money back for the rest of the nights. I also had booked another room for the last two nights for more of my family that was coming and had to get that money back as well. After negotiating for a long time I was told if I was out within an hour I wouldn't be charged for more than what I stayed. The front desk person tried to act like this was a normal bug because of the location but I know what a nasty cockroach is. I told her I had a picture of what I put in the toilet before I flushed it but she didn't ask to see it. When we were hurrying to get our stuff together while trying to make sure we weren't bringing any bugs with us the housekeeping asked why we were leaving. I told her and she wasn't shocked, she actually told me they just had to bomb for cockroaches down the hall so that's probably why they were scattering. I was willing to look past a lot of things to keep this dream view/location but I don't do bugs especially roaches. I ended up at a nice hotel that was roach free but unfortunately was also view/beach free also. This place ruined my family vacation that I worked hard for. I'm not rich so thousands of dollars means something to me and peace of mind is priceless. They stole my peace by letting someone bust in my room unannounced and most importantly by letting me stay in a room down the hall from where they just bombed...
