MADE is a "form over function" hotel. Your experience here will depend on whether you place a higher priority on aesthetics or comfort - it looks very nice, but it lacks comfort and has a lot of problems with practical usability.
It felt like an Instagram hotel. Very hip and chic, nice aesthetics, looks cute in photos. But there were so many little irritations throughout the stay that really hurt our experience.
Our bed was essentially a mattress on the ground, but placed on a low platform that extended outward from the edge of the mattress (~8 inches) to the floor. So getting into and out of bed is super awkward b/c you can't just place your feet on the floor and stand up, you have to 'reach' with your legs and then push yourself up off the mattress.
There is no dresser to unpack clothes, no closet, and THREE hangers total for two people. There were two drawers at floor level under the bed, but one of those was filled with a safe. The safe didn't work. So you have one drawer and three hangers for all your clothes.
The bathroom was SO awkward. No place to put anything (this was a theme) other than two small glass shelves, one of which extends awkwardly over the sink. There's no soap dish, so the bar soap just slides around on glass, making a mess. The sink is a single column with a basin at the top and no counter, so washing your face gets your feet wet. (The faucet is a long copper pipe that sticks out so far that you can't really lean directly over the sink. Again, super awkward.)
The mirror in the bathroom is offset beside the sink rather than above it, so things like shaving or doing makeup require you to keep leaning awkwardly to the side. The shower head is directly centered over the stall rather than dispensing downward at an angle, and the cubby for shampoo etc is a metal box with sharp corners that will scrape you if you bump into it at the wrong angle. The toilet is small and cramped because there's an odd wooden shelf wedged next to it, so you have to sit at an angle.
The headboard on the bed is this odd arrangement of posts and dowels with fabric intertwined around the wood, but it's not really padded and there are enough corners and exposed wood that it's easy to bump your head.
There's no place to put anything. No luggage racks, very few shelves or furniture at all. Our stuff just ended up messily piled on the ground next to the wall. One small table that folds down from the wall, and one small table that's below knee height. Everything is very low to the ground, and some of the tables have inexplicably convex tops, like a shallow dome - everything you set on the table slides off and falls on the ground.
There's one chair and one stool in the room. The chair is this big bowed-back circular thing with no padding on the back, so if you do sit in it, you're leaning back onto hard wood.
It's so DARK. All the lighting is dim, even in the bathroom.
We got one of the rooms with a balcony, which was nice overall but only had one small chair on it. So if we both wanted to sit outside, we had to drag the one stool out there to do so. It's hard to relax and when you have to sit in a low crouch and can't lean back at all. The balcony had two planters filled with dead grass. Why even have the pots with dead, dried, ugly plants in them?
Beyond the awkward design choices that prioritized aesthetics over usability, the hotel has some disappointing practices. You're assessed a $30 "curation fee" EVERY DAY of your stay, like you're being penalized for giving them your business. That fee covers a handful of "perks:" you can get a free TINY drip coffee from the shop in the lobby, a single glass of house wine during a narrow one-hour interval in the afternoon, 'free Wi-Fi' (yay?), and the option to spend more money on scooters or the rooftop bar.
The good: it's in a great walkable location in NoMad, the staff is helpful and friendly, and it was clean. But for $400-500 a night, I expect a more livable, comfortable hotel room, not just one that looks cute...
Read moreDeeply disappointed with our stay. For over 700 dollars a night stay this hotel turned out really bad and I couldn’t wait to get out by the end of our stay. It made me so depressed. We paid for a more expensive room, so this is not even a base level experience. Here are some of the issues we encountered that seemed like a part of the larger issue. Rooms were filthy. We had to tell staff to reclean as there was months of dust/hair behind the headboard which you can see when you move the pillow. Floors were dirty and everything that touched the floor got coated with dust. Our Floor smelled like fried food non stop, we weren’t even close to the kitchen - 11th floor Alarms kept going off daily Rooms have no sound proofing, you can hear noise from all sides, impossible to sleep, you need earplugs. I’m used to nyc noise as I lived here but this was like living with an open window First room we were put in was next to an elevator that made so much clunking noise with each move it was not sane to be there, no idea why they release this room to guests I asked to be moved and the second room while it solved the lift noise, had worse external sound isolation which meant outside noises were very loud We had a bad shower unit that kept overflowing on the floor perfect to get fungal infection, drain wasn’t working properly Hotel lobby is overcrowded as its a cafe and you have nowhere to be as a guest. They saved one small table for guests, everything else is randos from the street with laptops as if this is a wework. You are not welcome when you get down to the lobby. You are sandwiched between a coffee shop and the rooftop bar, and feel like a bother as a guest since other services seem to be more of a priority with people constantly rushing up and down for these two venues. I’ve never seen anything like this where a guest has nowhere to be except their room and other businesses are prioritised Non expected 30 dollar “curation” fee that doesn’t provide anything really, absolute scam. When you try to get a ‘free’ drink, the staff at the cafe is annoyed at you, and if you don’t drink wine you can’t get an alternative for the other drink they offer Wifi that is 2mbps, barely usable that kept disconnecting in the room constantly No toilet brush No fridge in the room Bathroom doors didn’t close, you can hear everything from the toilet To reiterate again how bad it was, rooms had NO sound isolation whatsoever, you can hear your neighbour tv, new york, lift, hallway, chairs pulled above your head, the rooftop party, ac unit outside, everything Staff was pissy (more than typical nyc pissy) and while some did their job, everything felt like they were doing you a favor, not like it’s their job to create an experience.
I have no idea how this hotel is rating this high, after our experience I think they are buying reviews. Our exprience matches the negative reviews. Other than the location, everything else absolutely is not worth the money and it was probably the worst stay I have ever had in my life and I spent some time in some dodgy hostels. Gutted how it turned out for us as it was supposed to be a nice break trip to NYC and instead it felt like I was living above a kebab shop for 5 days. If this was a 200 dollar a night stay I’d say ok - I’ll deal with it, but at 700+ it’s an absolute ripoff.
I’ll never come back to this place & I strongly advise others to really read the...
Read moreOne star for its location and very comfy beds, everything else was really disappointing. I would recommend this hotel to people who have a high tolerance for noise from neighboring rooms, the hallway and on the upper floors also the rooftop bar. For everyone who likes a quiet retreat from their days and nights in the city I would not recommend staying here. For $500 a night I would have expected much better. Some more details:
Great Location in midtown is great for a quick access to everything. We spend some time in Manhattan but also saw friends in Queens and Brooklyn - it never took us more than 30 mins to get to where we wanted to go Super comfy bed and pillows
Bad Rooms are not soundproof at all. The walls are paper thin so expect to hear literally everything you don't want to hear from neighboring rooms and the hallway. We had lovely neighbors next door who either had a really deep sleep or who just enjoyed listening to the iPhone alarm in the morning. Their alarm went off around 8.30 every morning for 5+ minutes so after the first minute we were wide awake too and then enjoyed some more minutes of the symphony. The first morning we even checked our phones to make sure we didn't accidentally set an alarm because it sounded as if the device was right next to us. We like to sleep in a bit on our vacation so this really sucked. You can of course also understand conversations (lots of "OMG"...). Same is true for anything that happens in the hallway just much louder: doors shutting at every hour of the night, housekeeping and if someone is in the hallway you are involuntarily part of their conversation and can understand every word. We also asked for a room higher up which was a mistake because when the rooftop bar is open you feel as if your bed is right on the dance floor. Luckily, the club closes at 1am on the weekend and we were only affected by this once for two hours. Street noise is less of an issue as it is a rather quiet side street. Shower situation: Our shower had a sloping ceiling which made it a bit claustrophobic for a tall guy like me. The shower just had a curtain which felt a bit cheap, more annoyingly though it clung to our legs every now and then. Water pressure was OK but shower head seemed scaled or something else was wrong with it as it was not a steady stream of water Bed sheet was ripped in two places. I don't really care much about it but for their price point it is not acceptable Room was clean except in the narrow gap between bed and windows (where I would leave my water bottle and glasses for a lack of...
