Morrill Mansion was the absolute BEST bed and breakfast I've stayed in! I chose this place over another popular hotel on a whim and I'm very glad I did. Parking in the back lot was easy and included in the price of the stay. The inn keeper, David, is what really made the stay fantastic! Not only was he extremely polite and charming, but he was an excellent resource for all-things Portland, including activities, food, sightseeing, etc. With every interaction, you could tell that he really cares about his business and his guests. He was thoughtful and remembered things we mentioned in previous conversations. He always made sure to ask if we were comfortable and was able to answer any question about Portland we threw at him. And if you've read other reviews aside from mine, then chances are you already know about the amazing breakfast buffets and the fact that David is a wonderful cook! I even asked him for the recipe for his scrumptious raspberry custard and he was able to produce it instantly, indicating that I was not the first to ask this question. Even the fresh afternoon goodies in the common room were not to be missed and included brownies, whoopie pies, and blondies.
We stayed in the Back Cove room, which was comfortable and clean. It may be slightly smaller than a typical hotel room, but it was enough space for my boyfriend and I to be comfortable. We had enough space to keep both of our luggages open and accessible, and there was a large closet for even more space. Included in the room was a small table and 2 chairs, which was especially handy because of all the take-out meals we did due to COVID. The pictures online are pretty accurate, but the charm of the room can only be experienced in person.
There were lots of great restaurants and shops near the B&B. Downtown Portland actually starts only a couple of blocks East of Morrill Mansion. Although we had a car, we walked to Old Port a few times, which took my boyfriend and I about 20 minutes each time. It's not a strenuous walk and it was actually nice to walk through downtown and do some shopping on the way. My boyfriend and I walked towards Downtown both during the day and at night and felt safe always.
Most importantly, David made sure to take adequate COVID precautions. He always wore a mask and disposable gloves, made sure that all surfaces were cleaned, had groups eat breakfast in separate rooms or with more than enough space between tables, and offered room service on a by-request basis.
I highly recommend Morrill Mansion to anyone looking for a reasonably-priced, comfortable, and overall top-notch stay in Portland! I am definitely staying here again whenever I come back...
Read moreIncredible stay. From accommodating requests to store luggage for an extended time to the amazing breakfast, this was a highlight of our short trip. The house is historic but extremely well cared for with tasteful touches throughout. The coffee and tea available on each floor with some dedicated seating/reading areas adds to it's charm and coziness. Beautiful bathroom with bathtub (we stayed in the Back Cove Room on the third floor), cozy bedroom with everything you'd expect plus a few extras (chairs+bench, mini fridge, ironing board+iron), and a great breakfast. We had french toast, blueberry scones (best scone I've had), and egg-free custard with fresh strawberries and cantaloupe alongside hard boiled eggs, toast, bagels, yogurt, and juices/milk/coffee. David the owner changes the menu daily, so if you get to stay multiple nights (we unfortunately did not) you'll get to try more of his amazing cooking. The location is fantastic, easily walkable to downtown Portland and the bay.
The only (tiny) negative was the unreliable internet connection (worked okay for minor tasks, but streaming and vpn services for work frequently stopped playing), but there are plenty of places nearby to do work online.
Overall, would highly recommend and would CERTAINLY plan to stay here on...
Read moreI usually dislike staying in B&Bs but this one has all the good things about a B&B mixed with the good things about a hotel.
-First, the dedicated parking lot behind the house is key! No worrying about street parking restrictions. -The building itself pretty big so you don't feel like you're in someone's house. Couldn't hear any of the other guests while in our room. Felt very private. We stayed in the "back room". VERY clean, decent bed, really nice big bathroom, AC, very quiet. -Lounge room open 24/7 with books, DVD's, coffee and tea. And can't forget David's special Whoopie pies which you can grab anytime during your stay and they're actually really really tasty! -Breakfast was great, many options and separate tables like a hotel/restaurant so no awkwardly sitting around someone's kitchen table like most other B&Bs.
Really, this place was excellent and I will definitely be staying here again if I am ever back...
