The building itself is great, but unfortunately I had a very bad experience with the staff. I arrived in the morning and was told that check in is only from 3pm and parking was 6 bucks per day. When I asked if there is free parking around the receptionist informed me that since it is holiday season street parking downtown a couple of blocks away was free. She also showed me a map with the free area highlited. Since I am on a budget I drove around for half an hour and squeezed into a tiny lot. Just when I got out a parking officer arived and told me that parking was indeed free... from 4:30pm (it was still before noon). A little annoyed that I wasted my time I drove back to the hostel and friendly informed the receptionist of her mistake with the stand that she owed me free parking for a day. She looked at me a little confused vanished into the office and came back a minute later with the map she had before and said that it was written on there. She and her supervisor who joined the discussion soon denied the fact that I was misinformed because she waived the map in my face. Obviously the receptionist made a mistake which can happend but just denying that is not okay. In the end I gave in and agreed to pay for parking. Even that was not possible. Apparently parking is only possible from the moment you check in (3pm remember?). My argument that in this instance an exemption was in order was conter with: "that would not be fair to our other customers". Sidenote: their lot was half empty. I guess you can imagine how happy I was to go hunt for another street parking lot.
Edit: I wrote this before my actual check in and while I stay with the opinion that the encounter described above was handled badly and just overall unnecessary, the rest of my stay made up...
Read moreI want to share with everyone so they don’t make the same mistake we did. We booked HI Sacramento which was formerly a hostel and is now a “venue” I use that term loosely, for our wedding ceremony and dinner. The manager or whatever she is, was the NASTIEST most RUDE person I have ever dealt with in my life. Not only was everything completely covered in bird feces (all railings, all sidewalk and stairs, all outdoor tables and chairs), we had to go around and pick up trash that was scattered around, the handicap lift only worked with a key we were not given so some of our guests including our grandparents had to leave and she kicked my handicapped mother with a placard out of the handicapped parking spot so she could park there, none of the lights outside came on at all for our evening ceremony and the topper was, she stole my wedding dress and other garments. She ruined our wedding and ended up making us late for our flight to our honeymoon because I was there pleading with her to return my wedding dress. When confronted about my dress she responded with, “the world doesn’t revolve around you”. We rented this place for 2 days and spent a decent amount of money to be treated awful and had to spend more money to buy cleaning supplies and labor to scrub off all the bird poo. Even our vendors called her since she wasn’t on the premises about the handicap lift and she yelled at them for asking. I am still in shock and disbelief that this “venue” is being run this way. I could go on and on about what we endured, please reach out if anyone wants more information. I wish I was warned before my wedding weekend and beginning of our...
Read moreI love the history of this place but I won’t write about it as you should book a stay here and ask the staff and they’ll tell you all about it. This place had me in awe with my jaw DROPPED as soon as I walked in. I love history and having the opportunity to stay here felt pretty cool. The staff is very accommodating, friendly, and hospitable. Bunk beds are actually pretty comfortable. You get towels on your bed too when you get to your bunk. I recommend getting in as early as you can at least while there is still daylight before quiet hours to see your bunk, get accommodated and maybe get parking on the side behind the gate. ( I just get a little anxious parking in the street so that’s just me. ) the breakfast is just a simple one. Serving bread, oatmeal’s, breakfast bars with hot coffee, teas and hot water. You are more than welcome to bring your own food items too as they do have a community kitchen but friendly reminder to please speak with staff of course out of curtesy. Needing a place to unwind and rest after a 12 hour drive was certainly worth it. Safety, a cozy bed to stay, and a little hot breakfast is what fit my personal needs. The showers were nice and hot too. I know a hostel may not be for everyone as you’re sleeping in the same room with strangers. (being prior military I feel helps since you go into the field and sleep grouped together majority of the time - you end up getting used to that when you go enough.) If you’re okay with that, keeping an open mind for others and sharing a space then I’d recommend this place 100%. Of course being respectful to those around you and surrounding rooms if...
