My experience at this hostel was everything I hoped for: a clean, safe place to sleep at night with caring and friendly staff who take pride in their work, great people from all over the world to mingle and explore with, great conversation, amazing food, dancing, and the list could go on! If you’re thinking about visiting - stop thinking and just do it!
(The remainder is a thorough review of my 4-night/5-day stay that I hope may be helpful to the hostel first-timer.) Getting there: The bus: I started on bus #992 walked a block and caught bus #30 which dropped me off a block from the hostel. It was super convenient! Tip: Consider using Pronto or another bus fare app so you can easily pay for your fare without worrying about exact change.
Checking in: I arrived earlier than the check-in time so I was unable to have my bed assigned to me right away; however, I was given a tour of the facility and was allowed to tag my bag and leave it in the office so I didn't have to lug it around while exploring the boardwalk. Checking in was simple and easy and each member of the staff was simply wonderful.
Accommodations: Showers/Bathrooms: Positives There are a total of 3 bathrooms/showers with shelves within easy reach so you can bring everything you need in with you - including your clothes if you happen to feel nervous getting dressed in the sleeping quarters. With the number of people living here it is amazing to me how clean everything is kept! A lot of effort is put into cleaning throughout the day and it shows! Challenges The shower seemed to take a long time to heat up, so be prepared! Common Room: Positives The couch is super comfy You’ll have access to a TV and decent wifi The kitchen is well-organized, labeled, and includes just about everything you need. Challenge/detractor There is no freezer so don’t plan on storing your frozen goodies. (But feel free to share with your roommates!) This is superficial, but I have to mention it because I almost chose a different hostel because of it: the dark olive green walls did not scream “California Dreams” to me. Don’t let yourself be lured away by a colorful paint job elsewhere - you’ll love it at California Dreams Hostel! Tips: There’s a stash of games in the ottoman so don’t forget to break them out and play with your roommates! (Anyone up for playing Cards Against Humanity next time I visit?)
Bunk beds The Good: Privacy curtains!!! This feature was the final deciding factor for why I chose this hostel. I also appreciated the hooks, shelf, and outlet with light within each bunk! (You also get a small locker assigned for storage.) Challenges: The mattress is definitely not anything to be excited about but it does the job, and getting in and out of the top bunk can be awkward. Tips: Bring a sleep mask and earplugs/headphones to help get a good night’s sleep. The bunk bed metal dividing panels are very noisy if you happen to lean against them so try to avoid touching them when people are sleeping.
Location: Positives: It’s a short walk to the majestic pacific ocean for a fraction of the cost of most hotels. What more do you need to know? Lol Everything you need is within walking or biking distance. Bars, coffee shops, and all manner of restaurants and activities - this location has you covered. Challenges: If you have a rental car, parking can be difficult. Tips: Skip the car. This city is totally walkable with all manner of transportation alternatives like electric bikes and scooters. For longer distances - make some friends and share an Uber to local events.
My favorite part: The People. I was so emotional the day I had to leave and still am as I write this. Staying at California Dreams and stepping out of my INFJ comfort zone to connect with the interesting people around me created a profound sense of gratitude within me which I previously only experienced with meditation and ecstatic dance. Thank you for everything California Dreams! I hope to...
Read moreFirst time staying in a Hostel, originally I wanted to stay in La Jolla. On my way to San Diego, I received a text confirming my check-in, that was considerate.
When I arrived, I had to ring the service buzzer twice before getting assistance (the employee sitting at the computer did not acknowledge my presence initially) When I checked in, I was asked to pay for my entire stay, although I was initially charged for the 1st day ( I checked in as private guest)
I was provided a parking pass because of being a private guest, however on Thursday, and Friday I received a towing violation. I submitted the violations to management.
On Friday, my room was not cleaned. As I came back from LA Fitness, I spoke to the house attendant who was cleaning the room right next to mine (Room E) I was in Room F. She stated that she did not speak English, and that my room was not on her list. I even ask if I could get a broom to sweep the room myself (sand from the beach was on the floor) she just smiled, saying "No English!"
The 1 Star represents the potential of this Hostel. Great location from Ocean Beach, Pacific Ocean Beach, Mission Bay Beach, and La Jolla Beach. Places to walk down Voltaire Blvd for entertainment, food, etc. The guests were personable. I met Marien, who was starting her teaching assignment as a German instructor. I also had a competitive ping-pong adventure with Tina. The kitchen was available to all the guest to use, including the utensils.
Being asked to pay for my entire stay while checking in was a red flag ( I had witnessed other Customers checking in, without being asked to pay in advance). In fact one woman while checking in on Friday evening, specifically stated that she only wanted to be charged for the 1st night). When the house attendant refused to clean my room after politely requesting the service, that was another red flag. Having had 2 tow warning notices put on my car was another red flag ( lack of communication from management to the church faculty...parking was in the church parking lot)
In good faith, I believe that management had been tipped off by former business associates: Keith, Robert, Scott, Casandra, Lauren and Serena to possibly provide this type of treatment.
Note: My previous review and rating was removed. I am curious to see how long this review and rating remains. I am also curious to see if management will respond...
Read moreDuring my brief one-night stay, I thoroughly enjoyed the pleasant company at your establishment. The bathrooms were conveniently unoccupied, and the beds provided a comforting and immaculate experience. Although I didn't extensively utilize the kitchen facilities, I did savor the delightful tea offered.
I would like to commend Llewellyn for her exceptional hospitality. She warmly greeted me, provided a thorough tour, and proved to be an invaluable resource throughout my stay. Her patience in addressing my inquiries, no matter how confused they may have been, was truly commendable. Additionally, she graciously offered the use of her hair oil when I found myself in need, and there were no alternative options available on short notice.
Bri, who assisted me during the nighttime hours, demonstrated a friendly demeanor and was instrumental in addressing my queries about basic accommodations. Her approach was professional and contributed to a relaxed atmosphere.
I also appreciated the kindness of Ryan and Meghan, who graciously allowed me to join them for television viewing. Ryan, in particular, was quite engaging in conversation. It's worth noting that he shared Meghan's age, a detail that, in a professional context, may not have been necessary.
I must also express my appreciation for Jasmine, a bright soul who warmly waved me goodbye on the day of my departure. Her cheerful demeanor and warm farewell provided a delightful conclusion to my stay, leaving me with a positive and memorable impression as I bid adieu. I commend her for adding a touch of kindness to the farewell, making it a genuinely pleasant way to conclude my visit.
Overall, my stay was not only comfortable but enriched by the amiable and helpful staff. I extend my gratitude to your team for making my brief visit a positive experience.
I nearly overlooked the fact that Amanda, situated outside the California Dream Hostel in Pacific Beach, treated me to a delightful Açaí smoothie featuring peanut butter and coconut flakes. The beverage was exceptionally delicious. While I'm uncertain about the duration of Amanda's presence there, if you happen to visit the hostel following the date of my review, I strongly suggest indulging in this...
