We stayed at Mudville Flats for 3 nights and it was ideal. Although Mudville calls itself a boutique hotel it is more like a collection of separate self catering flats/apartments in one building. We arrived mid afternoon and had already received a text message as to which apartment we would be staying in together with the entry code number. Luckily we were able to park outside — the road has parking meters along it — to unload our bags. Whilst we were doing that Linda arrived to welcome another guest and took the time whilst she was waiting to show us around our flat and showed us how everything worked which was extremely helpful. For the icing on the cake Linda then took me to where we parked the car — an underground secure car park — which although was less than half a block away due to the one way traffic system in San Diego necessitated nearly a 10 minute drive there but only less than a 5 minute walk back. Our flat was on the ground floor and consisted of a small hall with a high table and 2 high chairs, a large living area with a bedroom with king sized bed , a smallish kitchen and an en-suite bathroom. The living room had a large flatscreen tv, a wall mounted air con unit, a sofa which could be converted into a bed, an armchair, 2 small movable tables and a larger table by the wall next to the kitchen area. Finally there was a Welsh dresser with contained restaurants menus and other local information. Although there is a baseball theme running through some of the wall decorations there are enough other more quirky decorations to make it all rather interesting. The bedroom which can be separated from the living area by curtains had plenty of cupboard space, 2 bedside cupboards with bedside lights, on one side was a separate electric charging point and on the other a mood sound box. The en-suite bathroom has a small half sized bath with a excellent shower above it surrounded by a plastic curtain. There was a single washbasin but plenty of shelving space to put things. There were plenty of towels, toiletries, soap and a hair dryer. As I have mentioned the flat is designed for self catering and the small kitchen area was well equipped for that with a very large fridge/freezer (which had ice in it when we arrived together with a jug of cold water), a microwave , toaster, coffee maker, a large gas stove with an oven and a sink. There were plenty of pots, pans, plates and cutlery. The flat was spotlessly clean and very spacious. Mudville Flats is ideally located being about 4 blocks up from Petco Park, if you want to watch a baseball game, and a few blocks away from the centre of the Gaslamp district., the convention centre and the waterfront. It is about a 40 minute walk (15 min drive) up to San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. We had a wonderful stay at Mudville Flats and thoroughly enjoy...
Read moreA very beautiful San Diego downtown bed & breakfast! My wife I stayed for 6 nights attending a conference at the Convention Center. We loved it for many reasons and are booking our return trip to this bed & breakfast for next year! Each day began by making and savoring an early breakfast on the patio (we got all our groceries at the Little Italy Farmers Market and at Grocery Outlet nearby) - Just us and the lovely garden - So relaxing, even though we were in San Diego's downtown. After a long day at meetings (easy walk from there), it was like returning home. We could kick back, eat at great restaurants (Cafe Chloe and Table No. 10 are new favorites), cook if we wanted, and be removed from the conference scene. The East Village is right near Petco Park and the Gaslamp but it has a character all its own. It was perfect for us. As independent travelers, we appreciated being mostly left to ourselves. We also enjoyed some great chats with Mike and Linda and got offers to be driven somewhere, or picked up, as others have mentioned. So nice! We had a car for a couple of days and the parking was fantastic to have. We also used buses and Car 2 Go. The boutique hotel is a lovingly restored home with all the comforts you could want. We stayed on the back (Room B) and it was SO QUIET). Can't wait until next year to come back to this wonderful downtown bed...
Read moreLet's just start out with this unassuming four-flat. From the outside, it is a well-kempt place with a porch reminiscent of a normal two-story walk-up flat. That's where all pre-conceived ideas should be left. On the porch.
The owners are incredible. Terrifically sweet people that strive to make your stay as pleasant as can be. Linda gave us the complete instructional tour - from how to get to the parking garage, how to manage the front door (yes, you have a key to the kingdom), to which routes to walk to eat to where you can go to shop or how to take a foot-tour of the area.
The interior is ridiculously clean. Cozy and comfortable in a very California-craftsman style home, you are greeted by a nice living area and your bedroom. We had a small kitchen with all of the amenities and a nice bathroom.
The charm of the space is awesome and the back yard is a great place to relax and meet your friends or other lodgers.
My wife and i used the "guide" list supplied in the room to help us understand what was close to walk to for eats. Be it moderately priced or "cheap" it was all good and not more than a 10 minute walk in any direction. (check out Cafe Chloe)
Stay here if you can. We understand that they can get busy around certain times of the year, but it is worth the effort to...
