Bottom line: Overall, I'm pleased with our 8 night family vacation stay at this hotel. I would probably choose it again unless I had reasons to visit or stay in some other particular part of town. An issue at check-out lowered my rating by 2 stars.
Room: We had a double queen room on the 5th floor. It was very clean, modern and a good size with a full kitchen (that we didn't use.) I didn't find the bed as comfortable; I prefer a firm mattress and thicker pillows than those supplied. I didn’t request additional pillows but I’m sure the staff would have responded because they were great.
Staff: I’m sorry I don’t recall the name of the woman that checked us in but she was very friendly and efficient. The room safe had a low battery and she arranged maintenance while we went out to dinner. Later in the week, we arrived back (3:30 pm) before the room was serviced (it seems housekeeping is kept busy until 5 pm). Issac radioed housekeeping and Guillermo arrived to change out the towels as we requested and even went above and beyond to do a once over cleaning in the bathroom. During the entire stay, staff members were friendly and caring while attending to their work.
Breakfast: was typical fare that you’ve come to expect a hot sandwich type egg muffin or such, selection of cereals, make your own waffles, etc and fresh apples, bananas and oranges. Staff kept the area clean and evenly stocked. It was good for days when we had to make an early start. However, if you want a full service (full price) breakfast, Swami’s, a couple blocks (downhill) at 6th and B St., was our favorite.
Location: If you’re healthy, have good shoes and are of a mind to it, the Gaslamp area or Little Italy are about a 10-15 minute walk downhill on 6th or Beech streets respectively. Likewise, it is possible to walk (slightly uphill) to the museums in Balboa Park. Of course, there is no shame in calling Uber for the uphill directions. We walked, sometimes in both directions, including in the late evening (8-9 pm). If you are a city dweller, you're familiar with areas like this. However, if you were not aware that some people do not have a house to live in, I understand you might be uncomfortable walking these routes. But, this is not a dangerous area. Wait times for Uber were typically 5 minutes or less anytime of the day.
Check out: didn’t go smoothly. Based on seeing the issue in others’ reviews, I requested a print out of the folio. I had been invoiced for daily parking ($25/day) despite having been clear at check in time that we did not have a car. While checking out, the clerk removed just 5 out of the 8 charges and I had them remove the other 3 too. This took some time to get right. While waiting, the very next fellow checking out also had been charged parking but didn’t have a car. Since I had seen this issue in the reviews prior to making reservations, management must also be aware that it is an ongoing issue. It seems to me systematic and failing to address the fault smacks of dishonesty - a 2...
Read moreWe stayed for three weeks at the place to explore SD for the first time, and this place was WONDERFUL! There was a large fridge (with freezer etc), microwave, dishwasher (dish soap provided), utensils, cooking pots and pans, toaster, coffee machine basically everything you'll need to live somewhere long term. Downstairs, there was a nice-looking gym too. We cooked during our 3 weeks there and everything went smoothly because we had everything we needed and more. The location is around an $8.21 ride away from Balboa park by Uber, which is super convenient and not too bad. There is an MTS bus stop a 10min walk away. Oh the BREAKFAST was wonderful-- they had Cinnamon bagels, like 7 types of yoghurts, hard boiled eggs, juice, coffee, swiss mix, cereal, milk etc basically most of the food you'll want for a takeout breakfast that's easy to eat anywhere. They were extremely covid safe too because they had a staff pack the all-you-can-eat breakfast instead of everyone picking their own food. The staff? AMAZING! They were always so helpful and sweet and kind, and I'm thankful for them throughout the three-week stay. The room was also spacious (just like the photos), and they had a nice roomy bathroom with soap and all provided. There's also wifi provided (fast enough to video call and watch movies etc). When we needed things, we'd call the front desk, and they'd either bring the items up for us or send a cute robot upstairs (adorable!) Their lobby is spacious, comfortable, and has many tables and chairs (giving clean cafe vibes) for people who want to work. It's not necessarily a meeting room, but it is good to work if you like working in a public space. I looked at Airbnbs before coming, and, honestly, for the same price, this is much better, convenient, safer, and even has breakfast provided at no cost. During one of the days, the electricity shut off for a special circumstance for 8hrs, but honestly the staff was kind and the place was so wonderful I don't even think too much about it. This place is like a residence inn or an apartment with room service. You can order packages to the location or even buy things like water or instant noodles or medicine in their lobby. We didn't ask, but it seems like we could also borrow board games etc. LOVED THIS PLACE SO MUCH the only downside was there's not much to do walking around the place because everything was 10mins away by car, but overall BEST location by car to attractions and fun...
Read moreI had been a long time Platinum Elite member of the Hotel Marriott and This hotel is not what Hotel Marriott represents. In all my Hotel Marriott experience I had not encountered horrible experiences changing room as the first room they gave me had found a big spider size of a quarter coin. All I want is to take a rest as a I had been driving from Nashville to San Diego but I cannot get a peace and serenity in this hotel.
Check-In: Booked two King Suite rooms 6 days before my arrival and when I get in the hotel checking-in my room is not ready the fact that I did a mobile check in. And even then I checked in after 4 p.m.
In my profile preference, i put high flooor room and away from the elevator and this hotel is giving me one room at the ground floor and one room in the 6th floor and I don't want to get separated from my daughter.
The parking is not convenient. When you're checking-in and you had to leave your car out front and if you're in a passenger side it is way too dangerous as the unloading parking is right by the main road and all they have is a valet parking so as a hotel guest that doesn't want to used the valet you have to park out front by the public parking and the fact that i don't feel safe doing that as it is in a downtown and who knows even you're car is in a public parking where you have to pay and put you're ticket at the dashboard still there is a possibility you're car can be broken too and that parking smells of urine.
So with all said and done I spoke about my concern and ask the front desk if I can speak with their Manager and their Manager never came nor even send me an apology letter.
Even the room is contemporary and new I will never ever come back here with all of my unhappy experience from reserving my room to checking in to staying at their small queen size bed room which was a not my preference as I originally booked and pay for a studio...
