I had a decent experience staying here after a last minute change in plans had me scrambling to find an affordable room in the downtown area.
I think Warfield is more of a “hostel” than a hotel, due to option of having an ensuite bathroom or a shared bathroom.
Prices are very reasonable due to this feature and due to the location - you are in the thick of the Tenderloin neighborhood. Key-access required for entrance. Door bell for new arrivals. Security cameras on sight. Staff diligent of folks coming in off street. I personally observed them handle situations with care and de-escalate when necessary. Elevator & stair access.
It is an old, old building but some renovation has been done. It is a bit musty, a bit dusty, and worn out but from what I saw the shared bathrooms were kept in order/clean with locks and I did not come across and creepy crawlers or critters during my stay. Definitely no bed bugs, I diligently checked my room before settling in as my red alert senses were going off that maybe I picked the wrong place.
Front desk workers were professional and very aware of the customers and non-customers. Due to my late arrival they were even kind enough to escort me in and out as there were some creepy men attempting to approach me as I came in and out for dinner that evening.
My room was very bright, spacious and had all the amenities I needed. Everything was clean and usable. A little mold along the edging of the shower but nothing too gnarly or negligent. Sorry, I didn’t get a picture of the shower. Furniture is a little dusty and worn but nothing concerning. My bed was visibly clean. No bed bugs.
Due to my corner/street facing room, the noise level from outside was LOUD all hours of the night and into the morning. It was a weekend and it’s a lively area. Bring ear plugs if you’re sensitive to noise at night. Normally I am but I was so exhausted I slept through most of it.
Lots to do, eat, and see nearby!
Some other things to consider: The immediate corner that the hotel is located at reeks of piss and dookie & there are folks nearby that are unhoused, engaging in drug use, and what I assume are mental health related behaviors. This comment is made not to pass judgements on the folks of the neighborhood but to give you a picture of what you might be walking into when you arrive late in the evening (about 830pm) like I did. My best advice is get to and from your destination as quickly as possible during the evening, have a buddy, and be aware of your surroundings. I had trash thrown at me. I am a small, young, woman and although I was fearful coming in and out in the evening, I moved quickly and staff kept an eye on me. Ultimately, I decided to move to the Hilton a few blocks over but given this was not my first choice to stay here, I am impressed with my stay, all things considered.
There are all types of folks who stay at the hotel, including families. Use your best judgement but I would say overall it is a good...
Read moreJust spent the last 5 nights here and here’s my complete honest review of this place...
Pro’s It’s absolutely beautiful in a rustic kind of way (the building was built in 1907 I think it said, so if you appreciate that kinda stuff, you’ll understand it’s beauty)
It’s VERY clean, no matter what the other reviewers say. Yes it’s a shared toilets/ shower, but they are clean and there’s never a wait. Naturally I was very skeptical of this at first but after I checked out the place and got settled in, no issue whatsoever.
Every time we came back to our room, it was tidied, bed made and fresh towels.
The front desk workers, very polite, friendly, helpful!
Microwave and fridge in room was a plus!
Room was quiet.
Very close to lots of things (ie good food, downtown, market st etc..)
We had a screen missing out of a window and without even bringing it up, when we got back after an excursion there was a new one in our window. That was pretty cool for me cuz I like that they take notice in the little things.
They supplied shampoo and conditioner in the shower room, and quality stuff!
Lots of upgrades to an old build, like card key doors, upgraded flooring, paint. (Loves the old elevator, please keep that forever!)
Flat screen tv’s in the room with lots of local channels.
Con’s Door slamming early morning/ late at night. The doors are still old they don’t exactly close without some muscle. It can get annoying, but it’s not constant. But I also feel just some people didn’t seem to think of others, as I never slammed my door and respected others around me.
Unfortunately the area does have homeless people around, which is out of Warfields control. Warfield is located just outside the “Tenderloin” area which is where all the homeless reside. They never hustle or harass you, some are helpful, cheerful and will chat with you if you give them the chance. But that being said, as not all of them are clearly not bad people, still I would cab or Uber at night. If you feel like walking, avoid Tenderloin. Side note: if you do ever have trouble, there’s a police station 2 maybe 3 blocks away on eddy st.
No A/C, but it cools off at night.
Minimal selection for continental breakfast/ seating.
That’s everything I can think of right now and I hope it helps people in there choices of places to stay, and if someone has questions, feel free to write me for honesty. One thing I had not mentioned is pricing.. San Francisco is a very expensive place to visit and as for me the price I paid seemed a little steep but as I got there and learned the city I realized the prices were very fair.
Would I stay here again? Absolutely, 100% I would. In fact, I plan too again some day. I can’t give 5 stars but I’m going to give 4 stars and if I could, I would give it closer to 4.5...
Read moreWhen booking, we didn't realize it was a shared bathroom, so we “upgraded” to a room with private bathroom. After checking in, we tried to take the elevator to the third floor. The elevator got stuck on the second floor. Luckily, there was staff on the second floor, and they pressed a button in the hallway to get the elevator moving again. Once we got to the room, we noticed blood on the door handle, and I thought to myself that’s not a good sign. My initial thought was correct as there was hair, multiple dead flies, debris, and a used bloody snotty tissue on the floor. The tv remote was disgusting. It looked burnt, had a greasy feel (don’t want to know what it was) with a hair on it. The bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned, and toilet paper roll had a few (less than quarter of a roll) pieces of toilet paper left on the roll. The freezer frost had reddish brown stains (looked like blood) and the blankets had brown streaks (either dried blood or feces) that didn't even look like they had been washed. I didn’t dare pull back the sheets, as I’m sure there were more surprises in store.. we grabbed our stuff and headed out of the room. As we were closing the door, my backpack pressed into the door across the hallway (literally 2 ½’ our door) popped it open from minimal force. The rooms are obviously not secure. We went downstairs and asked for a refund. The hotel refunded our “upgrade” money and informed us that the room refund would have to be dealt with through hotels.com. We dealt with Hotels.com via text. They were so unprofessional, they sent us a text of a woman's reservation details for a different hotel, the room types, check in and out info, her name and email, then said "sorry wrong chat". In my humble opinion, it’s not very safe to be accidentally providing other people's itinerary/personal info to the wrong people. They then refused to provide a refund and said it was because the hotel wouldn't approve, yet the Warfield had no problem refunding the upgrade Onsight. I would also use caution in dealing with hotels.com, because you don't know if someone else may be getting your info accidentally in a "wrong chat", they really don’t care about your refund, and it's my personal opinion, all of their reviews cannot be real as there is no way people are giving this place a 10 out of 10 on their website. We were so fed up with the situation. We didn't even stay...
