Definitely worth doing the hike to the lodge and staying the night. It's a bit pricey, and you have to book far in advance (or get on the wait list and hope someone cancels, which they did so we were able to make it), but the cost includes a fantastic dinner and breakfast, and of course the views can't be beat. We did the Trillium Gap trail up (hoping to the see the llamas, but they had been pushed back a day), and the Rainbow Falls trail down (parked our car at the Rainbow Falls Trailhead, where Trillium Gap Trail also started). After camping three nights in the cold prior to heading up to Mount LeConte, the heated bedroom was a welcome change. The bed was just ok, but still much better than sleeping on the ground, and the room came with an oil lantern, a chair, and a pail to get water to do a sponge bath. They have flushing toilets for the paying guests, but you do have to walk outside to get to them. The office has a large seating area with lots of games. In the dining room, they sit you with other guests, but the same ones at dinner and breakfast and it was fun getting to meet the other hikers. The staff were very friendly and helpful. After dinner, we headed up to Cliff Tops to watch the sunset, and the views were amazing. If you are thinking about whether you should stay at the lodge or not,...
Read moreLiked: The views were amazing. A 6 hour hike in some of the most beautifull parts of the Great Smokey Mountains gets you to the lodge.
Disliked: The lodge has signs posted according to T.C.A. 39-17-1359 forbiding lawful concealed carry. Whenever I go hiking In the Great Smokey Mountains I always carry. There has been more than one instance of bears attacking (and sometimes killing) hikers in the backcountry. Bobcats, cougars, and (dispite And despite being an invasive species and multiple attempts at eradicating them) wild boar are not unheard of. Not to mention the cases of criminal activity out there. If any problems arise you are hours from help. The 6 hour hike to the lodge is a lot less safe without being able to defend yourself. As a carry permit holder, I will not be going back untill this policy is changed. Which is unfortunate because it really is an unusually...
Read moreThis hotel was not pleasing to my husband and I at all. I wouldn't even give it 1 star if they offered a lesser one. Number 1, we had no room hospitality at all. They skipped over our room for the whole 7 days we were there. I had to ask for towels and toilet paper everytime. We had to take out our own trash. The tub would not drain and filled up to the edge by the time I was finished my shower. I told the office about it and nothing was ever done about it. The floors looked like they had not been mopped in months. I wiped up some water I had spilled with a napkin and the napkin was completely black. It was loud at night all night long. People talking loud, slamming doors, dogs barking...it turned out to be a nasty, bad place to stay for our vacation. We will not be staying there again and our friends and family will hear about our...
