I was highly looking forward to this past weekend and getting up to Vermont to enjoy a nice sunrise hike with my wife and golden retriever. As I was looking for a dog friendly hotels, I was very excited to see best western had an option in South Burlington. Having stayed in many best westerns in the past, I was pretty confident I would receive a high-quality return for my money. Something that was very important to me given the high peak foliage season pricing. Sadly I was very wrong.

As we were arriving Friday evening and planning on doing a sunrise hike on Saturday, my expectations were quite basic and simple. I needed clean beds, clean room, and hopefully quality sleep for a few hours before a 3 AM wake up. In fairness, at least the beds were clean. There is a clear breakdown in basic cleaning processes/protocols.

Problems: Brown stains on bathroom walls next to toilet.

As we were preparing for bed, my wife went to the bathroom to brush her teeth and noticed brown spots all over the wall behind the toilet. They were very visible to the naked eye and never washed off. Hopefully someone was just throwing a cup of coffee into the garbage and splashed some on the wall. At least that is what I keep telling myself.

Dirty floors.

Noting the stains on the bathroom walls my wife decided to take a face cloth and simply run it over the floor in front of the Toilet. The cloth Was very dirty after a simple single swipe. Clearly the floor had not been washed or clean thoroughly before our stay.

The same experiment was performed in multiple areas of the Hotel room at self and the same results were obtained. Extremely dirty floors that had not been clean prior to our stay.

Poorly functioning MOLDY AC Unit!

The air conditioning unit by the window did not seem to hold the room temperature well and I had to try to adjust it multiple times. That was bad enough but then I looked at the vents and noticed It was covered in mold. Upon closer inspection I could see the air conditioning filter was dirty as well. But that mold was absolutely disgusting. Beyond that, mold in an ac unit is a health issue!

I spoke to the front desk after identifying issue number one. The front desk was very polite And offered to send someone down to clean the stains but it was almost 10 o’clock at night and We just wanted to get a few hours sleep Before our hike the next day. I did ask if there was another room available but unfortunately they were booked solid due to peak foliage season. As finding another hotel so late at night Was not an option with such an early wake up call, We decided to try to just go to bed. Unfortunately feeling agitated With such subpar accommodations paying premium prices for peak foliage season, neither my wife nor I got a good nights sleep.

The only real positive was the customer service I received. As I said the individual at 10 PM at the front desk was very polite. When we woke up at three, I did speak to the front desk again and the person on duty was able to provide some pricing relief Given our negative experience. The weekend Front desk manager also reached out to me later in the day to apologize and appeared to genuinely appreciate the feedback provided.

The customer service I received is the only reason I am giving a two star rating versus a one...

The South Burlington Vermont Best Western Plus is a larger hotel near route 89 and has pretty much everything nearby that you could ask for: shopping, grocery, convenience, gas, and quite a few restaurants. This hotel serves a free breakfast in the morning which is probably what the “plus” is for haha.

My breakfast consisted of sausage patties, scrambled eggs, a blueberry scone, and a mini cinnamon bun with a dollop of icing on top, very cute and delicious! I always drink the same thing, cranberry and orange juice mixed together.

Customer service here was excellent and friendly and gave good recommendations for local eats. The Windjammer for instance was one of the recommendations as a 5 star fine dining experience. I chose to eat to Chicken Charlie’s next door as I am here on a different type of business/passing through.

Walking to my room was quite simple as I was on the first floor, it’s a great hotel to have your car with you however, because if you get a room on the other end of the horseshoe, it will be a walk. When I opened the door, I was welcomed to a small but quaint 1 queen bed room with a hard floor surface made of vinyl fake wood. There were carpet pieces that ran parallel to the bed which was a good idea. The room was clean, smelled good, and the heater/cooling fan was easy to understand and operate. When I took my shower, I didn’t have to wait long and it was easy to setup. The water coming out of the shower head and faucet was pure and did not smell. If you were hoping to drink from the faucet, I would approve of the water quality.

In the bedroom I really enjoyed that the lamps all had plugs on them. The tv was easy to use and responded quickly when I changed the channel or volume (you might not think this is a big deal, but I’ve been to many a hotel where this was the reason I DID NOT watch the tv).

My only dislike was that I could hear the other people through the floor above. The floor would squeak every time someone got up to move. Otherwise a great stay, and...

I just can't say enough good things about this place! Due to medical treatment I come to Burlington once a week and stay here for the night.. I've been doing this for about a year now. The staff here is absolutely amazing! They've treated me SO well the whole time. They've worked with me and have always given me the best pricing possible. (they've saved me alot of money which i can't thank them enough for!)

The hotel itself is great.. The rooms are set up very well, it has a nice up to date style.. always neat and tidy. I've never had a single complaint the whole time I've been coming here. There is also the convenience of having an AMAZING restaurant right here on the property. The Windjammer is definitely a 5 star restaurant in my book. Their food is to die for.. the service is excellent; and its got a great, relaxed atmosphere! I've recommended it to everyone I know!!

All I can say is.. if you're in the area, don't go anywhere else! It's such a great place to stay. But most of all.. the staff really makes it great!! They're always very chatty & cheerful.

For now, this is my home away from home. My treatment can be very hard on me.. but the staff here makes my life much easier. Booking/finding & pricing hotels can be very stressful.. and now it's not, thanks to them! I know it might sound silly to some because "it's just a hotel", but to me.. at this time in my life, one less stressor really does make a big difference to me. This staff is amazing all around!! And this hotel is just awesome. Can't recommend it enough!

☆☆☆☆☆ -Bridget

(I keep saying "the staff".. they deserve some specific shout outs: Kelsey, Casey, Rebecca, Armando, & Charles! You guys have been so great! You're all so friendly, and professional. You all work very hard and are great at what you do. This hotel is great because you keep the wheels turning. You're all awesome! Thank you for...

You can definitely do a lot better in Burlington. The staff here is mostly friendly - other than a strange encounter with the front desk where he insisted my room key couldn’t possibly be broken when it definitely was. They have a helpful convenience shop that sells basic goods around the clock, and there’s a relatively charming pub attached to the property with good beer selection and bar food. They have a pool that is clean, but the chairs are dirty/uncomfortable and could use updating. The rooms are for sure the worst part…which is kind of the deal breaker. Tiny pillows, very limited space for moving around, and the bathrooms are worn. We found a giant hairball on the wall of our shower, which had us second-guessing what else hadn’t been cleaned before our arrival. Not exactly located in a charming area: you’re surrounded by a number of gas stations and the highway. We found a drug needle in the parking lot, and there was an armed guard on duty at night which didn’t exactly ooze “safety”…although at least they care about protecting their guests. You are walking distance to a very good bagel place (called “The Bagel Place”) and a short drive from a cute old-fashioned diner as well. If you’re in town for a quick stay, looking to save a few bucks, and don’t care about location, fancy amenities, or size of room, this will do the trick. But if you’re trying to have a true getaway and also care about cleanliness, updated rooms, and being able to walk to local attractions in downtown Burlington, I can’t recommend this Best Western.
